Well, the other thing to remember about Original Trek is that Majel Barrett -- Christine Chapel -- also was the voice of the computer (in every Trek, until she died last year), as well as the wife of director Gene Roddenberry. So she had a lot of influence on the original series that might not be that obvious. (The actress also played the Betazoid ambassador on Next Generation.)

Personally, I am getting a good laugh from the current Reboot's McCoy, because I first saw him on Xena playing (no joke) Cupid. Also Julius Caesar, but... Cupid.
