For reasons that do not need exploring at this juncture, I am a Giant Ball of Anxiety.[1] I am actually considering renaming myself that (GBA for short, I guess, although I do realize that that is not the ideal acronym). I cannot sleep without having the worst anxiety dreams I've had in years, and that's assuming I get to sleep, which mostly I don't; I just stare at the clock and think anxious thoughts. My skin is breaking out! I am covered in hives! I keep walking into things! If this keeps up, by the time I get to Vividcon, I will be fit for nothing but crying in my hotel room for three days. I, um, really don't want to spend three days crying in a hotel room. For the record. I mean, I could cry at home much more cheaply; there's no point in going to Chicago for that. So I have decided it is time to make some posts designed to distract me and, with luck, reduce the possibility that I will have to ask for an extremely late change to my badge name. ("If 'GBA' doesn't work for you, you could always call me Inappropriate Hysterics!")

The first such post went smashingly. I thank you all. I now know much more about classic beauty. I've also learned that if Gina Torres and Audrey Hepburn were, through the miracle of - time traveling lesbian reproduction magicians? Look, I think this is the kind of thing that doesn't need a reason - to have a child, it would be the most classically gorgeous person of all time. I think someone needs to get right on making that happen.

So. We have done photos! Clearly it is time for MUSIC. And also POLLS, as those are the traditional, time-honored distraction techniques of people too distressed to provide actual content.

This is a poll for people who have music playing devices or programs. I am hoping that's most of you. There are some, you know, questions and things, but there is also a Bonus Content Option that I am really really hoping a lot of you take, because nothing is more distracting than new music.

So, to start things off in the Bonus Content arena: the most played song on my iTunes is Roscoe, by Midlake, which I have played 513 times. (Obviously, this is a hate-free zone. If you think it sucks, don't tell me. Instead, post your most played song. I bet it is far, far better than mine. Cooler. More classic. Whatever.)

And the song I am most obsessed with at the moment is The Chaconne, by Dessa.

Now, tell me yours! (People not taking the poll are still entirely invited to post their most played and current obsession songs in the comments, by the way. Encouraged. Begged. Whatever.) And also about your music. (And join with me in lamenting that there's no numerical entry poll option that would do averages and means and so on but not require scales.)

[1] Okay, I know at least some of you are going to want to know, so: it's mostly to do with Leaving My Baby for the First Time Ever. Also imperfect traveling arrangements. And OMG SOCIAL TIME fear. But mostly Leaving My Baby, who is actually three and will be at home with his mommy and perfectly fine, no matter what my dreams persist in suggesting.

Okay, so I went with the figures in iTunes rather than my iPod, which probably changes things a bit? I mean, I haven't synced in a while, and I've been spending an awful lot of that time listening to my Liberator mix and not the Tragically Hip and Decemberists heavy other writing playlists....

ETA: Also, I'm hoping that the types of music in the last question are all made up? Because otherwise I'm even more behind the times than I thought ;-)

Any player you choose is welcome! I have Winamp, which has my older most played stuff in it, and iTunes, which I've been using for the past three years or so. We all have many players, I guess is the message here.

And the types of music are indeed made up. Although Rastabilly Skank was not made up by me, and I am waiting hopefully for someone to come in and squee with me about it.

I hoard music by artists I like, but I'm really bad about actually getting around to listening to it. And there would be more women in my top twenty if about 15 out of those weren't various Gaslight Anthem songs. I discovered them about six months ago and absolutely fell in love.

Gaslight Anthem songs I am in love with:
Spirit of Jazz"
Wherefore Art Thou Elvis?
Great Expectations
Bring It On
Old Haunts

... I could keep going.

Most played (though my music player's records only seem to cover the last year or so): Vienna Teng, "My Medea"

Current obsession (picking one at random from the small clutch of current obsessions I rotate): Hazmat Modine, "Bahamut"

I wish to register my sadness that Gregorian Chant-Hop doesn't seem to exist outside your brain (though apparently Theremin Core does).

My MP3 player is an iPod Shuffle gen2 (which I manage with non-iTunes software); what is this "playlist" you speak of?

I have no idea what its most-played song is; when I hear something too many times, I throw a few new songs on, take some off, and reshuffle. I don't have a current obsession song, but right now, I'm very fond of I Don't Like Mondays.

I salute you for having a Shuffle! I need to be IN CONTROL of what I hear a lot of the time, so Shuffles are not for me, but I admire people who can take what comes all the time. (I'm curious about what non-iTunes software you use to manage it, though.)

BB loves I Don't Like Mondays. And it is definitely appropriate to the time, although what I need right now is a song called, like, I Don't Like Being a Giant Ball of Anxiety. That would be perfect. *g*

I used to have about 5,000 songs in my library, but I've never been that obsessed with music - I can go several days without listening to anything but my wake-up playlist - and there was a lot I hadn't and wouldn't listen to, so I listened to everything, made my picks and cut it down by half. The only items in my library I haven't listened to are a few Mozart tracks and some podcasts/Cabin Pressure episodes.

And I don't really keep mix playlists - I make them, but delete them as soon as I get tired of them. The reason there are over 70 playlists in my iTunes is that I find the artist/album navigation on my iPod really annoying - as in, there is just too much scrolling - so I have a lot of smart playlists by artist (and movie if it's a soundtrack) just so I can organize them into folders. And subfolders. And genre, sort of. I add the initial of their genre before the artist's name so they'll alphabetize that way.

See, I should totally do the thing where I listen to everything and delete stuff. And yet. I don't. Partly it is just the daunting AMOUNT of songs I have to listen to. *eyes iTunes warily*

But clearly you are ENTIRELY MORE ORGANIZED when it comes to music than I am. I am - not. And my playlists tend to be either "Some Songs I Really Felt Like Listening to on This Specific Day Two YEars Ago" or "All the Songs about Vampires!" or "All the Songs aobut Jim Kirk."

...But, actually, that is not a bad representation of my brain, so I should probably stick with it.

Bwah! I will have to do the poll later, 'cause'n'a how all of my stats are on iTunes at home. But truth be told, I do the overwhelming vast majority of my music listening either via mp3 discs in my car (you can get, like, eight or nine CDs worth of music on a single disc) on long road trips, or... um... yeah, that whole "live" thing. :*)

But here's one of the shiniest of my shiny, shiny musicians:

Carter Sampson doing "Good for the Meantime."

God, I love her. Carter will soothe your soul, man. Pretty much all of the songs from that show are on this Youtube playlist. And this is her website.

And, of course, I'm always obsessed with Himself Mr. Fullbright. My favorite song of his that's fairly new is I Only Pray at Night. Soooooomeday, this will be available on a CD, but that day is not today. Soon, hopefully.

Most played for me: Two Steps From Hell's "Heart of Courage." Yes, it is trailer music (and occasionally video game trailer music, at that), but it is EPIC and never fails to help psych me up.

And I approve of ALL your current obsessions. I could have picked a lot of different Dessa songs, and Alibi and Children's Work are totally on that list. (Why is there no vid to Children's Work? WHY?)

The encroachment of children's music is something I dread, but I can FEEL IT COMING. (My sister and her kids listen to a lot of children's music, and what I have learned about it is that it is Earworm City. Listen to one song written for children, sing it until the kid you heard it with is out of college. I am not thrilled with this.) I still have all the lullabies and so on from the earthling's babyhood, too.

I am glad to hear your children survived. MAYBE THE EARTHLING WILL TOO. Although right now it feels like I won't.

Okay, I have no idea what I think about that song, because listening to it was HYSTERICAL. The earthling apparently really likes it, and thinks it should be danced to and sung. And he thinks the lyrics are "Roar roar roar." I think I came very close to dying of laughter, listening to and watching that.

pocketmouse: an open road: straining the limits (limit)

I do not like most female vocalists -- it's a pitch thing. Most of them are too high, or something? I dunno. I like Pink, and Rilo Kiley, and sometimes I can stand Vienna Teng, but not always, and I love Florence + the Machine and Dar Williams. But most of the time as soon as I hear a female voice I have to turn it off or shoot my ears off. Looking at my files, I'd say maybe 1% of my music has solely female vocalists.

I label my music primarily by what language it's in, and if it's in English also by whether it's primarily male or female vocalist. If it's an even split, I tend to label it male, since what I'm going for is sequestering the stuff that makes me want to shoot my face off so it doesn't surprise me by accident. Because it's not bad music, I just have to be in the right mood for it, or looking for a specific type of song for vidding (Amy Pond is impossible to vid with a male vocalist).

Grounds for Divorce - I'm not really obsessed with it as such, but I've been listening to it a lot lately because I've been trying to make a -- well, it's the audio equivalent of a vid, really, layering audio clips over the song. It probably won't work, but I've been messing around with that this weekend. I don't tend to listen to specific songs on repeat unless it's stuck in my head when I wake up in the morning, or I'm doing something like vidding it.

I don't make too many playlists, either. Other than the language playlists, which I mainly use so I don't get mocked for listening to Tanzanian witch music at work, I only have a handful of playlists -- playlists for stuff to go with a fic I'm writing, or playlists full of stuff to give to my dad, who has excellent taste (most of the time).

Galahad - This has 200+ hits because I spent 8 hours straight listening to it on repeat while I was doing a light hang by myself after having been up all night. Despite that I still can't sing it on my own. My ability to sing seems to have gone downhill in recent years. But Josh Ritter is my favorite artist. He's so damn clever. I want a songfic fest just so I can get fic for his songs. And, well, a million other songs.

One of the reasons I asked the female artists question is that I used to like very few female artists, and in the last five years or so that has really changed, and now my top 20 is more than half female artists. Maybe it's age? I don't know! But if you like Florence + the Machine, you should see if you can stand Marina and the Diamonds. (Check out I Am Not a Robot! I love this song, and not just because it makes me think Kirk/Spock thoughts - that is MERELY A BONUS.)

I already know and love Grounds for Divorce! (And, oh, I am curious about your audio project. Zoetrope did something like that a long time ago for SGA; it was very cool.) But Galahad is new to me, and awesome. Thank you!

I reset my music library fairly frequently so there are many songs in my current media player library with 0 plays that I have definitely listened to many times in the past. Annnnnd songs I have listened to hundreds of more times with not many plays. *shrugs* Annnnnnnnd I tend to often listen to songs in VLC or on CD or YouTube or something instead of my media player. Anywho, still answered questions to the best of my ability. ;)

My current most-played song in media player: Face to Face / Short Circuit, by Daft Punk, from Alive 2007 (link on YouTube)

Usually I have a song obsession but ATM I'm absorbing a new album which involves playing it on repeat, in order, until I get tired of it. With some other stuff as well sometimes but the obsession is spread out. The album is Dying & Falling by indie Chicago metal electronica band I:Scintilla. I think the most mesmerizing track from it for me is probably Prey on You and the title track Dying & Falling is a good example of their style of slow song.

The last song I heard randomly somewhere and immediately perked up and went I HAVE TO GET THAT! for was Eat. Drink. Sleep. Think. by now-defunct early-2000s Scottish punk duo Motormark. The first line of the song is "She could've been an astronaut/ But she's fighting off the killer robot". I can't think offhand of any way that that lyric could be more perfect and amazing and in my opinion it wins the internet by default. The rest of the song isn't THAT mind-blowing but then, how could it be unless it was entirely devoted to, like, Wonder Woman and dinosaurs and pirates and ninjas?

But in the slightly-longer-term, excluding Lady Gaga, I've been most excited about Gold Motel, which is the latest project by Greta Morgan (previously Greta Salpeter) of The Hush Sound (one of the bandom bands). It's sweet sunkissed California retro pop, melodic and catchy, and her voice is incomparable. They released an EP a year ago containing the two equally amazing tracks Cold Shoulders and Slow Emergency and they just released a brand-new single called Leave You in Love.

Most listened: "Fireflies", by Owl City. So, uh, I heard this song somewhere, and really liked it (super-unusual for me! It was in the charts! I never know things in the charts!) and bought the whole album in digital form, which I never do, because I really wanted to listen to it. I put it on single-track repeat and listened to it on the way to work. And at lunch. And after work, while I went away for the weekend. And for the four hours I spent waiting at a deserted single-platform train station for someone to collect me. And then a bunch of times after that, but it's the day-of-eight-hours-of-repeat that really boosted the stats. For comparison, the next most-listened track is only at 70 plays.

I don't have a current earworm, but I did spend a couple of hours yesterday listening to Bon Jovi's "It's My Life". Sometimes I just need loud distorted guitars, even if it does come with a bunch of middle-aged rockstars singing about how they're totally going to escape and be famous and no one's going to stop them doing what they want.

I love that song! I heard it randomly on a new wave radio station, and bought the MP3 on iTunes. I know have their two albums, but Fireflies is still my favorite. I don't know exactly what it is about that song that makes me love it so much. It's fairly simple (if by my definition of complex I would use Bohemian Rhapsody as an example), and the lyrics are kind of crack-y, but I think that's part of why I adore it so much. It's just a catchy melody, and I love the chorus.

Can I just say that I appreciate these posts very much, as they have distracted me from my own sources of consuming anxiety at the moment. I hope they work for you as well!

The song with which I am currently obsessed is Drumming Song, by Florence +The Machine. That links to the music video on YouTube, which it turns out is not very good (IMO), so maybe I don't recommend actually watching the video?

The most-played song in my iTunes library is Runs in the Family, by Amanda Palmer, which was the last song I was obsessed with. This is also a kind of weird music video, and maybe not particularly anxiety reducing?

I did it wrong first and gave you pod results, which are not representative due to very limited capacity (have them here instead).
1000 songs on the pod
0 not listened to
30 playlists
8/top 20 sung by women (one more than on iTunes)

most played song (actually the same on both): Lost At Sea - Astronautalis, ~100 times [SCC vid / streaming]

latest most played on pod: We No Can Dance (Genesis Vs. Yolanda Be Cool) - MadMixMustang [Mashup, streaming, hello treadmill song :)]

All I Do Is One (Jason Smith It's Overture) Mastered - DJ Khaled Feat. T-Pain, Ludacris, Rick Ross, & Snoop Dogg [Holy cow that one's hard to get hold of. It's a mashup that I must have got in a Best Of 2010 mashups hunt. The only place that seems to have it up now is this one, in the middle of one of their podcasts. Curious. It seems to be identical with this, but then, only 2 minutes. >_>]

Here from network. This is really interesting.

My most played is Sleater-Kinney - Male Model. Which is nice, but not actually my favorite song from them. I don't know. I tend to put things on repeat and then listen to them for forever.

Current obsession: Chameleon Circuit - Everything is Ending. It's about Doctor Who, with parts from both Amy and the Doctor.
