That sounds about right. Some of the side characters have living parents, but the story overall has a HUGE theme of "constantly having wars is terrible," which involves an awful lot of kids being orphaned. Many of them then swear vengeance. It's a bad scene.

...Also dear lord, Gaara parenting. That--words kind of fail me.
