Older fandoms, you confuse me so. The story I'm reading right now has piercing gazes, searing gazes, cuddling, comforting, lengthy descriptions of eyes that change color (Green! Hazel! Gold! No, I'm not kidding - really, gold, and this isn't the right fandom for him to have been implanted with a Goa'uld.), marriage proposals, men of action sharing their feelings in astonishing detail and with great (sometimes searing) honesty, a guy telling another guy how beautiful he is, holding hands, kissing, and two adult men (of action!) with extensive disposable incomes living together and sharing a bed.

And it's gen.*

I am patiently waiting for the mutual declarations of eternal love while hugging (or crying; I'd totally take crying) in the rain. Then, and only then, will I be able to stop reading.

So, does anyone have a story from an older fandom to recommend to me? You people have mostly been at this longer than me - surely you've got some nice gen or slash story favorite from a pre-LJ fandom that you could link me to. Gen or slash welcome - especially gen that I can read as gen. Seriously. Save me from myself. And this story. I am just bewildered, here.

-Footnote-

* Another gen story in the same fandom (but by a different person) features a noted canonical horndog turning down NSA sex with a beautiful woman because he's in love with someone else - that someone being, of course, the guy who is his Entirely Not Slashy Totally Hetero Life Partner. (It also had a paragraph about their great and abiding love, and the Totally Hetero Life Partner isn't even in the story. Nor is there any explanation of why the THLP would want his "friend" to turn down the sex - I mean, seriously, it was just presented as "this is what you do when you're in love with your THLP, forswear sex and cleave only unto him, but in a straight and manly way." I guess I am just not straight enough to understand that.) And the author's note contained a diatribe against slash. Oh, my people.

oh, that's awesome - it's such a wonderful show. A note: there is a really annoying laugh track in the first few episodes. Ignore it - it goes away. Also, a fun game is to play "what lines did Sorkin steal from himself?" because there are a lot of lines that he carried over into The West Wing. Hell, entire plots were carried over.

Enjoy!

Hmmm, i'm lead to believe that the universe that this ficiton is set in is somewhat similar to our own. So. That rules out Star Wars, cause really when did any of those charcters hold down a 9-5 job? I think saving the universe from trynnany is a full-time, you-don't-get-down-time job.

Its an older fandom by the soudns of it. So, what about Gundam Wing?? That was my first slash fandom i ever really got into. Where as my first fiction fandoms were Star Wars and Dragon Ball Z.

You're having way too much fun here. Are you ever going to tell us?

I would totally guess The Professionals too, mainly because the physical descriptions there bore no resemblance to reality whatsoever anyway! I read some fic for it before I ever saw an episode and I spent the first 10 min going "when are Bodie and Doyle going to turn up?" followed by "wait, that's them?" (Though what really got to me about Pros fic is the way some authors used the word "rape" to mean "fuck" - it was disturbing.)

I can't think of any old fandom recs though, sorry.

Well, if you don't mind really long series of fics...

The West Wing was pretty much a pre-LJ fandom, or... just moving into LJ, I guess. Two incredible series are:

Anything by Jo and Ryo (http://fwf.healthyinterest.net/), who were smart and hilarious and their fics are fast, funny, and political (yes, they deal with issues. Which fanfic rarely does.) Mostly Josh/Donna but done in a smart way, and I particularly love A Winning Strategy and the Partyverse.

The Turningverse (http://www.jaegecko.com/turning-stories.html) stories by Jae Gecko, who was the writer that showed me that slash was not just wishful thinking of fanfic authors but was actually plausible. (Not only for these fictional characters, actually, but for RL too - yes, this fic kind of cured me of homophobia). It follows Sam Seaborn through the years, the first stories taking place way before TWW started - the very first story without any of the show's characters, ever - and then his on-again-off-again relationship with Josh, and then they get into the White House and there's a whole new dimension of political ramifications to consider - it goes through the first few seasons of the show, and it's absolutely riveting.

Then I will tell you more tales of the Gen That Is Not Gen!

The story I described above - well, I hadn't finished reading it when I wrote the post. I just thought it couldn't get any more slashy without actual blowjobs. Not so! The two male characters shower together, one of them washing the other. In, of course, a totally non-sexual way. THEY ARE JUST GOOD FRIENDS. WHO WASH EACH OTHER. AND SLEEP NAKED TOGETHER.

And I just finished ones in which they, through the magic of a plot device, gave each other orgasmic-like pleasure, repeatedly, by choice, in a totally non-sexual way. Seriously. I read it and said aloud, "Writer person, if two men are deliberately giving each other pleasure like sexual ecstasy only better, YOU ARE WRITING SLASH. I don't care what excuses you've come up with that allow you to pretend that it's gen. Trust me: SLASH."

And, of course, there's the one [livejournal.com profile] percysowner told me about from The Sentinel fandom, where Blair has to touch every square inch of Jim's body (while they're both naked, natch), and they get all sweaty and sticky, and they have to get towels to clean up afterward, and then Jim lies there cuddling with Blair and thinking about how weird it is that anyone might think this is a sexual relationship.

It is amazing how many writers out there wanted to write a story with all the trappings of a sexual and romantic relationship but without any suggestion of, you know, actual homosexuality.

Do you have long flowing raven locks that you frequently toss over your shoulder?

A medium brown bob just doesn't cut it in these stories. I will have to sub in my cousin, who has flaming red hair and a feisty temper.

I had never heard of that miniseries until last week, when my roommate and I mainlined it in two nights. Was this fic main-girl and wolf-boy, or what?

I'm not really surprised it's got fandom, come to think of it- I came away from it dizzy, reeling and desperately wanting to write several academic papers about gender presentation. And shipping main-girl and wolf-boy, which I never would have expected at the beginning. (Also, the special effects, while at first blinding, eventually became kinda charming. Awww, they were so excited about CGI, weren't they? Although I could have done without the ring. Creepy.)

THRILLED to hear you've seen it! It was my first online fandom, and the first for which I wrote fic that I let anyone else see...though I've been "fannish" for decades for one thing or another. And yes, I ship Wolf and Virginia, and even stalked Scott Cohen (Wolf) around New York City one summer, because he was in several plays. I was active in the fan club, yadda, yadda, etc. It was also my LAST het fandom...I'm an unrepentent slasher these days.

If you want to look at fanfic, you can try Kingdom's Press, a now-dormant archive chock full of fun things, including that story I referenced early, with the appallingly schmoopy line. I also offer my own 10th Kingdom fic, found on my Website, Chez Shay (http://www.chezshay.net/index2.html), under the menu item "Lambchop and Shepherdess." Hope you enjoy!

New people watching Sports Night is always of the good. When you're done watching, or even before, the best place nowadays to check out fiction is [livejournal.com profile] snarchive - there used to be an even better archive on Trickster, but it died, and there was much sorrow - and the links in the memories of [livejournal.com profile] crack_van are worth checking out, too.

I've written completely gen SN, actually. Although it was the exception, rather than the rule.

Kirk gets that ALL THE TIME, and ten years ago it was worse. The Golden Boy, golden hair, golden eyes - you think he was an Academy Award. And Spock comes as close to a THLP as any character in any canon.

I'm in MFU fandom. If you go to my LJ, [livejournal.com profile] st_crispins and look at the link bar on the right side, you'll find links to the entire fandom, what's online, both gen and slash.

We're active reccing on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van and that's a good place to start.
