You can tell if it's a first (1985) printing of Killing Time by checking page 41 - some folks have pre-vetted copies listed on eBay by asking the sellers to check for the quoted sentence. Me, I got mine by grabbing one with the right copyright date from Powells. I'm glad they typed it in properly - it does have the magic verifying sentence!
