And I am pretty sure everyone in the world except BB and McCoy can do it.

Yeah, I'm always a bit baffled when I hear about the salute being hard. I mean you just move your fingers apart in the middle, it's not contortionist or anything. I can do it fine either hand, and I didn't have to practice it like I had being able to wriggle my ears either. (I could not do that as a kid but wanted to, so I spent many hours thinking hard at the muscles near my ears that move them, moved them manually to feel what it would be like, and eventually managed.)

Jim Kirk was supposed to be bad at diplomacy

I think he's supposed to be good at it when he applies himself, just doesn't like it very much?

AWESOME, McCoy! Amanda can still hear you!

Some doctors unfortunately are like that though. My brother once needed emergency surgery, and he almost died and was in ICU for a while, and he told me later, that the last thing he heard before the anesthesia had fully kicked in was that one doctor casually remarked that he didn't think my brother was going to make it, only he used a half-jokey colloquialism like "he's going to croak" (well the German equivalent). So my brother thought he would not be waking up again as they put him under. You wouldn't think doctors would be so thoughtless, especially considering the studies suggesting that what doctors say has its own kind of placebo effect with real consequences for the patient.
