I can do it with effortless ease with my left hand (I'm left-handed) but it took me significant practice as an adolescent to be able to do it properly with my right -- the hard part is keeping your ring finger and little finger together while you split your finger, because it's easier to move your little finger outward than it is to move the ring finger.
I kind of mentally retcon Sarak and Amanda from this episode in the Sarek and Amanda of the movies and Spock's World. It's better that way. Though Sarek's dry bitchy comments to some of the other diplomats are awesome. You can see where Spock got his ability to pwn with deadpan insults from.
I'm sure there is some formal name for this trope, but I don't know it, so I think of it as the Going to the Garden to Eat Worms story.
I call it "Terriby Misjudged" -- as in, "it's one of those fics where everyone has Terribly Misjudged character X." It's one of my ironclad kinks, but fics that include it frequently tend to suck. A lot. You have to wade through oceans of badfic to find the precious handful of X is Terribly Misjudged and then Gets Beat Up Real Good gems.
