I think "adulthood" is a myth. Or else it's a word for "competence, as seen from the outside."

Whereas "competence, as experienced from the inside," has this layer of "oh my god what do I do the water is going everywhere oh shit this is my fault I should have done something differently and now we're all going to diiiiiiiiie" while your body goes on mechanically finding the handle and turning it (perhaps in the wrong direction first) ...

The kidlet still occasionally has nightmares about the time she made a "ball of yarn" out of toilet paper and flushed it, and the toilet backed up and water was coming up between the stool and the floor, and I came in barefoot in my nightshirt and stuck my hand into the toilet and pulled the wad of paper out, because what else was there to do?
