Sadly, though I am in Southern California, I'm in an apartment. All the ground we have access to is cement. :-(
My folks have a house and they have trees. My daughters love picking the things that are supposed to be limes but are yellow, and the orange/tangerine/whatever fruit.

I had a friend once who had a compost out back of her place. After Halloween they composted what was left of their pumpkins in it. Next year their backyard was over run with pumpkin vines. It was very cool. Not sure their landlord was happy... And they weren't even trying. Ah, Southern California.
