I never read The Grand Sophy. I read a couple of Heyer books when people favorably compared my fan fic to her books, and they mainly seemed to be about upper class twits. I wish I could say that I am so surprised and shocked by what you say about this other book, but how many of my clever classic English novel discoveries involved that blithe, "Hey this Victorian writer guy is great, tra la la...WHAT THE FUCK?" experience.
Anyway. I am determined to feel flattered that people thought I wrote like Heyer even though I get that she's one of the scarier British conservatives and also, I suspected they were smoking some pretty serious weed at the time. But maybe what they were really saying was, "You write id fic and I love it. My id and your id should be lovers. I know yours is the correct gender because I'm attracted to it."
Also, when Barbra Streisand adapted the I.B. Singer story Yentl for the screen, she uses that, "I knew you had to be a lady because I was attracted to you" ploy, too--which Singer did not. He lets Yentl get married and have a happy marriage, and we just don't know if her wife was too naive to notice that she didn't have a penis or was persuaded not to care.
