Oh God, so--okay, as a disclaimer, I have been a Sean Avery fan since he was bouncing back and forth from the minors and living over Brett Hull's garage with the Red Wings, uh, ten years ago now. I know he can be kind of horrible but I just love him okay? Apparently enough to delurk, hi.
You're referring to the remark about Elisha Cuthbert dating Dion Phaneuf, which you can read more about on his wikipedia page if you'd like, but the exact quote was: "I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about, but enjoy the game tonight."
Which is obviously not okay, and he was suspended and then not welcomed back by the Stars when his suspension ended, but the thing is, Sean was sent to anger management counseling by the league, and there were statements made along the lines of, "We're supporting Sean while he gets help," by people like Dallas's GM (Brett Hull, whose garage Sean had previously lived over, the NHL can be hilariously small sometimes) even after he was kicked off the team. I think there were rumors he was also dealing with a painkiller addiction at that time; that sort of thing's kept very hush-hush, though.
I'm not trying to defend him, what he said was obviously uncalled for and nasty, I just want to clarify what happened and that he did get professional help following that incident.
