It's great. It's fabulous. It's the sort of story you have to start reading in the morning because once you get into it, you cannot stop until you finish. I was scared of it too (I think it took me around 6 months to work up the courage to read it) but now I've read it about 10 times and I always say at the end, "Damn, I wish I'd written that!" And yes, there are certain parts of it that are not for the fainthearted, but if you go in prepared to be squicked out at least a couple of times, it's not so bad.
