Poll: Getting to Know You Even Better

It's the end of the year. We all have millions of new stories to read, and will shortly have even more. Many of us are hanging out with our families, which kind of inhibits porn consumption. So, obviously, it is not a time for recommending. Which means that it is time for invasive, involved questions.

Today's edition: your fandoms and mine. Tell me what you read and I will tell you what to read. And we will all get to Scotland at roughly the same time. (Sorry, but it sounded like it needed a chorus.)

This is your opportunity to influence the future, folks! I mean, only the future of this LJ. And probably - let's be honest here - not all that much influence, given that I hardly have influence on the content of this journal. But it will be interesting. For me, anyway. And for you, there's shiny happy ticky boxes. Everyone wins!

[Poll #639824]

Man from U.N.C.L.E. (What does that stand for, anyway?)

United Network Command for Law Enforcement.

I had a hard time deciding how to answer 'what percentage of stories I rec do you read' because I've already read at least 70% of them in the fandoms I frequent. It's a much lower percentage of familiarity, but also a lower percentage of reading, in fandoms I don't frequent.

Hope your holidays are very merry. :)

Dang! You beat me to it!!

[identity profile] maygra.livejournal.com 2005-12-24 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
And obviously I can't follow instructions. You recced me and I fell in love with you and your journal.

But really, you need to be reading Supernatural. Really, you do.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_divya_/ 2005-12-24 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
What you said about the percentage of stories question. Me too.

[identity profile] fanofall.livejournal.com 2005-12-24 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I read everything you rec -- even if it's in a fandom I don't read/know anything about/have never heard of and don't know the canon...

I always *think* I'm going to read most/all of the stories in any given recs set (because your babble is that fun! *g*), but I almost always run out of time and end up only reading the one or two from the fandom(s) I'm most into.

[identity profile] ruric.livejournal.com 2005-12-24 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have a great deal of reading time ususally, hence the fact that I only read about 40% of the recs.

However, holiday periods (YEY) see this increase and I'm promising myself some serious reading time between now and Jan 3rd *g*

*de-lurks* Suggestion for a FIHL:

Firefly. Cause, dude, Firefly. It's hard to tell what's more of a drama, the show's content or the story of What Happened.

I don't know anything about many of the fandoms you rec, so I don't end up reading that many of the fics, but the recs themselves are such fun to read, and your recs in the fandoms I do read have been excellent.

[identity profile] xanphibian.livejournal.com 2005-12-24 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I was supposed to be answering a question, but I forgot what it was. Oh, right! Why am I here, besides the stories, recs, and your sunny disposition? Well, I was kinda hoping to get laid. Eventually.

I can wait. I'm patient. *grins and hugs you*

And really. CSI.

As you probably know...

[identity profile] laurashapiro.livejournal.com 2005-12-24 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, it's all about the vids. Naturally I'd be happiest if you recced more vids. But I find you smart and charming, so I'm likely to stick around anyway.

[identity profile] deepsix.livejournal.com 2005-12-24 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm happily drunk and realised that I probably clicked 60% instead of 40%. I really only read in fandoms that I know, of which you recommend sadly few. I really do like your themed recs, though.

[identity profile] nightengale.livejournal.com 2005-12-24 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Couple comments.

I put about 30% read but it isn't a static number for me...some sets I'll read all of them, some I'll read only one. I've yet to find a set of yours that I have no interest in reading *any* of its stories, but when you throw Sentinel and Highlander and House at me and I haven't seen these things and I'm struggling to dive happily into SGA (I'm a spoiled-rotten SGA-fic newbie here)...I get distracted. ^__^;

Things you should read, then rec: I started a list in the box but really. Anime/manga/games. ANY anime/manga/games that catch your fancy, 'cause really...you'll find more readership no matter what you pick. On my own personal end of things, however:

You would appreciate the manga series Banana Fish. Really. It. Is. Worth. It. Its fandom is disgustingly tiny but my precious BF has two very pretty boys (who are so married oh my GOD) and are both rather mentally messed-up (Ash much more than Eiji). Ash runs a gang in NYC; Eiji's a Japanese journalist who gets wrapped up in Ash's gang wars and expose by total accident. Banana Fish has canon gay and canon UST and canon shota and canon guns and canon *everything* almost...set in New York 1980's with plot and eyecandy in equally large doses. Its fandom includes writers such as [livejournal.com profile] wildelamassu and [livejournal.com profile] sorchafyre...which are two names you'd recognize a little quicker if you were active in anime. So trust me that I'm throwing around Moderately Big Names. *G* The other thing is, a lot of other people would REALLY APPRECIATE it if they'd *read* it. If you rec it, they read. So this is me begging you to use your megaphone for my sadly neglected mangababy's sake.

And Saiyuki, too. Though I don't know what rock you've been under if you'd need me to go to square one, explaining that one. So I'll leave it at: everyone else is right about it. And just 'cause everyone and their uncle recs it...doesn't mean TFV shouldn't, too! ♥

And Monster. Anime series. Oh my GOD would you appreciate Monster...even though I'm betting the fandom is *TINY*. Haven't done a lot of digging, myself. It's a mindfuck of a show, and it's got pretty rabid fans, what few it does have. Dunno how slashable it is...and I know that's your specialty...but it has marvelous opportunities for hatesex/rivalsex/mindfucksex. ...and it's really about plot, here. Monster is about a very moral doctor in Germany who gets screwed over in his career, romance, whole *life*...and...then he gets screwed over again...and again... Nummy. ^_____^

Hmmm, let's think of something that would be easier for you to get your hands on; Monster and Banana Fish, while both SO WORTH IT, would give you a short runaround before you got hold of them - unless you just petition, acutally, 'cause people would probably copy their stuff for you. Duh. Anyways.

A really active, really fun, really easy-to-get-your-hands-on-it, REALLY slashy fandom that's big, strong, current, and needs direction-by-rec? DeathNote. Manga series about a couple really fucked-in-the-head kids, lots of death, the most dangerous notebook you'll *ever* see, and a really funny shinigami.

...I *like* fandoms where they're all mentally messed up, okay? :D

And what else.....Really. Anime. IN general.

As for what you *do* rec already? MORE ATLANTIS. *cough* Okay, I'm slightly rabid. But dude. Keep us up to date with the fresh-off-the-presses Atlantean best even as so many of us are catching up with the archives! ♥

And this was a very fun poll! *bounces* Happy holidays!

[identity profile] emhen.livejournal.com 2005-12-24 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
For "Why are you here?" I checked Other. That other is pimping myself into new fandoms. Seriously. Your recs have made me a fan of, to date and probably in order: Ocean's 11, Stargate SG-1, due South, Sports Night, Stargate: Atlantis, The Sentinel, and The Fast and the Furious (oh, God, why? WHY DID YOU DO IT?), and the Dead Zone. You are pretty much the enabler of my multifannishness. ^___^ I can even tell you the specific story that got me into SG-1: Reveille (http://www.intimations.org/fanfic/stargate/reveille.html) by Shalott. I also send other people here to be pimped, btw. And, seekritly, to be transformed into crazed slashy multifans a la me.

[identity profile] emhen.livejournal.com 2005-12-24 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, God, and I just read this up above and I had to second it: PLEASE read Supernatural. So I don't have to, and I can skim off the best. *shifty*

I'd really just be happy to find any good reccer doing some B5, because I fear to poke around the fandom myself. It's just that my attempts to find something, anything decent for one of the spin-offs left me B5-fic-spooked, and there wasn't even that much there--less than I expected, actually.

My friend [livejournal.com profile] azarias ascribes it to the fact that as far as a lot of the usual fanfic fodder goes, JMS has gotten there already. Canon ghey? Did it. Long, tortured character arcs? Did it. Silly, fun, cracky situations? Did it. Tentacle porn? Did it by implication. Alien pornos? Did it. (It was a plot point!) Women's underwear? Did it. Public sex? Did it. Telepathic sex? Did it. And so on and so forth. (I now pause to briefly marvel that there was no sexpollen.) Babylon 5: You'd be amazed how much you can sneak into a five-year-plus-extras story without anyone noticing. I mean, sure, Farscape had all this and more, but people actually noticed with Farscape. (And I've been told--and observed on my own peerings into the fandom--that Farscape dealt with the 'canon already did our crack' by becoming Land of the Darkfics, but I don't think that quite happened with B5.)

It's not actually 0% of your recs that I read - more like 2%, but that's too far from 10. Anyway, I hang around for your life comments-type posts.

I missed the last question, but I don't remember how I found you anyway. Friend of a friend, I think.

Hi, I friended you a couple of months ago when I was cruising rec ljs for Harry Potter and SGA recommendations and meant to say "hi!" then but time got away from me,so here I am better late than never, I guess. :-)

Anyway, when I started reading through some of your entries, I immediately fell in LOVE with your babble. You are absolutely hilarious and even if I don't read most of the fandoms you rec *coughDueSouthHighlanderHousecough*, I still love to read the recommendations themselves. They always leave me giggling. You have the most creative rec lj I've ever come across and I totally adore your style. Keep up the fantastic work and have a happy, happy holiday! :-)

I don't read as much fic as I used to, not since I've discovered vidding. However, I still read a lot of fic. I wish you talked about vids and vidding more, but I can understand if you don't. At least for a while. And I can always find my own vids, but it's fun when someone else finds them and talks about them, too.

Invisible Man! CSI! And stuff!

shiny happy ticky boxes.

Oooh! I *LOVE* the shiny happy ticky boxes. They make me giggle.

And your recs make me cry, but in the good way.

Haunting your rec page has lead me to some of the most heart-breakingly beautiful, wacked-out silly, intensely thought-provoking fic out there and I *worship* you for it.

I blame you *entirely* for my Dead Zone fannishness now.

Please *PLEASE* keep it up! *g*

And Thanks!

[identity profile] anenko.livejournal.com 2005-12-25 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm totally with you on Saiyuki. There are *awesome* writers in this fandom, and as many pairings as you could imagine. If you want to check out the fics, I'd start with [livejournal.com profile] louiselux; I also have a ton of fics bookmarked for future reading at http://del.icio.us/anenko/saiyuki.

Since we're talking slashy manga, I'd also suggest Get Backers. It's a 'boy's manga' which means that there's lots of fights, and women in skimpy clothing, but there's also a lot of intense male friendships (and the two main characters are totally my OTP).

[identity profile] auburnnothenna.livejournal.com 2005-12-25 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, ticky boxes, and I have my connection back for Christmas!

Filling out this poll confirmed what I suspected about myself: I am a fandom reading slut and that's why I love your recs! I know I never clicked Sports Night before reading your LJ.

At least I can say I was reading it before you recced me.

But even when I don't read a story you recommend, usually for lack of time, I always enjoy the enthusiastic babble, as well as the occasional rants.

Just because of you, my characters no longer card their fingers through each others hair or ghost them and I'm very careful that they don't do too much arching.

So, look, you've done that tiny portion of fandom that reads me a huge favor!

Merry Christmas!

[identity profile] nev-longbottom.livejournal.com 2005-12-26 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
We all love Supernatural to a creepy point, however, not all of us feel quite the same way about incest fic. ANd we do trust you with unhealthy love.

I only ticked video games because of Kovsky's brilliant and cractackular Mario Bros fic I read that one time possibly twice.

[identity profile] carnadosa.livejournal.com 2005-12-26 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that I read more of your recs then 60% of the time, but I refuse to read SG-1 because I loved Stargate the movie and it ended for me. But you did suck me into SGA, damn you. And I will read Sports Night as soon as it comes up in my Blockbuster queue. And I think you had me read FATF as well.

And the Manga that you don't rec I read were Inuyasha and Ranma 1/2, but only het. (this is like the only het I read, which is weird) At least I'm pretty sure you didn't ever rec them.

I love your babble, but if you skipping it meant that you recced more? More recs! Yeah for recs!

[identity profile] commodorified.livejournal.com 2005-12-31 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I am, in fact, here because you are charming, witty, fun to read, and lovely to know. If you rec in a fandom I read, I read it, but I'm largely here for the YOU.

[identity profile] zebra363.livejournal.com 2006-01-01 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with [livejournal.com profile] commodorified on this. Recs, polls, whatever, it's always interesting to see your posts. And I still wish you did more RL stuff on Other Journal!

[identity profile] fictionbya.livejournal.com 2006-01-01 11:42 am (UTC)(link)

Your posts are such fun to read! And I will find myself reading things from fandoms I don;t know much about. Really, best individual reccer ever.

[identity profile] janet-carter.livejournal.com 2006-01-02 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, back to a computer that isn't tied up 10 hours a day by my brother playing Civ. 4. Some of my comments outgrew the boxes:

I think West Wing's the only one I've read much of that you don't rec; it's been a while since I've read much of it, but there are some great stories, in a variety of pairings...ooh, and I just started watching Firefly, which I haven't really read, so recs there would be fabulous.

Also, I followed you off of Fametracker, back in the day! At the time I didn't read in fandoms I didn't know (hee) and so was amused by a couple of entries and then forgot about it until I saw PotC a few weeks later and then it all kind of snowballed from there...

And therefore, in conclusion, happy new year - may it be full of porn and puppies and other good things!
