For non-fiction, I would highly recommend Bill Bryson's In a Sunburned Country. It's a wonderful look at traveling, Australia, and the many ways they try to kill you.
As for fic recs... Well, it does so happen that I have been compiling a list of my own, using my own del.icio.us. I'm afraid it's mostly Who, though.
Ever After (http://astra-argentea.livejournal.com/61818.html) by astra_argentea is lovely. It's lyrical and disjointed, math and a fairy tale. Jack/Rose/Nine.
The Way Through the Woods (http://community.livejournal.com/better_with_3/108681.html) is also Nine/Jack/Rose, but it could be gen. To me, it's just this little, gorgeous, slice of truth.
Dead Like Wash (http://valiant.livejournal.com/6356.html) is a hilarious Dead Like Me/Firefly crossover.
And, bonus rec, because I forgot to mention it last set around: Primer is a great, atmospheric, really sciency time travel movie. I kind of adore it.
