I know I'm finding this really belatedly but I can't help but comment, from the other side of the fence.
The last year has marked the first time I've gotten into *any* real-life fandom (or 3-D, or media, or whatever you want to call it). Before that I was purely an anime watcher. And so, the only vids I knew were AMV's.
When I first discovered that they MAKE vids for non-animated source, it just about broke my brain. No, seriously. I hadn't even thought about non-animated fandoms having *slash* potential before that, either!
...I learned. ^_^
However, the pertienence here is that it's *just* as scary, I'd guess, for someone of my background to get into non-animated fandom, especially vids, as it would be for "you guys" (ie media-backgrounded fen) to hop over into anime vid realm. And it was the discovery of your journal, and then your vid posts, that helped ease me into the concept (via DS & SGA, mostly).
I'm beginning to think we need media fans and anime fans to buddy up and co-teach each other.
...And I think this comment thread/this post also is helping teach me why I read media-fandom fic that's labeled "crack" and say to myself, "Well, that's not all that cracky at all, really! Mpreg via sentient plant life, psh. Petshop has weirder shit in its anime, much less its manga!" "Crack" has a very different definition in this neck of the woods. XD
