You know, I sense a challenge in there. You know how people keep making the genre-switch trailers? ("Must Love Jaws," "10 Commandments I Hate About You," West Side Story as a zombie movie, all those - if you haven't seen them, although I think everyone in fandom basically has, let me know and I will get the links, because after doing that in fiction, you should definitely see it in trailer form.) Someone - someone not at all me - should make a multi-fandom FF genre switch challenge.

Except, hmmm. It would probably be depressing.

I don't think you read SGA, right? But [livejournal.com profile] trinityofone reworked Red Dwarf (the TV series, and if you don't know it then this whole thing makes no sense, so, um, just skip it, I guess) as an SGA story without the comedy. It turns out that if you strip the comedy from Red Dwarf, you get something really fucking grim, too.

Maybe what makes it work as comedy is the lurking potential for despair. I mean, maybe it's easier to get people to laugh at situations that they know could be horrible? I don't know. There's probably some kind of thought buried in there, but lord knows I couldn't find it with a map and a compass right now.
