Three things, almost entirely content free. (But one of them is a poll! There will be clicking, and that's always fun, right?)

I swear I will have actual content in this LJ again. Eventually. In the meantime -

1. Remember the poll? Um, this one? Thanks to everyone who took it, by the way, and I am slowly working my way through the comments, because they are meaty and thought-filled and fun. And I'm knee-deep in meta about it, but it's taken a strange turn. So I'm hoping that some of you will do my a favor, and run a poll like this one:

   Basically, I want you to ask your friends what archetype they think you are. (I've alphabetized the archetypes to make finding them easier.) And while you're here, please do pick mine; I'm truly curious to see if there's a difference between how I see myself and how others see me. (In this sense only. I'm not crazy.)
   
   Sadly, I don't have bribes to offer. But if you do run a poll like this, and you also drop me a link in the comments here, I will be forever grateful. And you will be furthering the cause of meta. (I know, I know, it's not precisely ever fan's dream, but - stay with me, here, okay?)
   
   
2. This is driving me insane, so - okay. I collect what I call genderswapped songs. Although, really, I should call them ungenderswapped songs - the song is covered by a singer of a different sex than the original one, but no gendered element of the song is changed. I have one song by Cam Clarke, from Inside Out, which is a whole CD of songs just like this. (The one I have is Son of a Preacher Man.) And I cannot find the whole CD anywhere. Does anyone have a copy of this? Or know where I can get a copy of this? I am experiencing the anguish of the thwarted collector, and it is not pretty.

I've heard the rest of Cam's album, and it's nowhere near as good as Son of a Preacher Man - much mellower. Much, much, MUCH mellower. Like, 'SOAPM came off an entirely different album' mellower.

I, sadly, don't have that CD but I just wanted comment and say that I have an obsession with 'genderswap' songs as well. They make me strangely happy. Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies has quite a few (seeing as how they only do covers), if you didn't already know that. Two of my favourites from them are 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' and 'My Boyfriend's Back.'

One thing I found interesting, reading the comments to your previous post, was the extent to which other people defined "fannish" very differently than I would. I mean, I'm still very fond of, say, Buffy. I have some people I interact with basically because we were once Buffy fans, and I'll watch Buffy vids, and maybe even read a Buffy story or two, but I wouldn't say I was in Buffy fandom anymore. I got the impression a lot of the people responding to that poll would say I was, though.

i don't have a poll to offer, but i can offer neko case's cover of tom waits' "christmas card from a hooker in minneapolis" (http://www.sendspace.com/file/xad7cg). and if you don't have it and want it and i can manage to dig it up from the external hard drive, ani difranco's cover of bob dylan's "most of the time" was the first thing i thought of when i tried to think of genderswapped covers of that variety.

Oh man, I have a thing for genderswapped covers too. And of course, now that I'm looking for them, I can't remember any of the ones I have that are more than borderline.

One of my favorites is the Fine Young Cannibals version of Love for Sale off of the original Red Hot and Blue compilation. It's not a gendered song, per se, except that by subject matter and tradition it totally is: http://download.yousendit.com/409AB10933F9D255

Also good, but borderline is kd lang's cover of The Joker which I much prefer to the original. In particular the line "I really love your peaches//want to shake your tree" strikes me rather differently when the singer is a woman: http://download.yousendit.com/02BE526D56118286

I also love songwriters who write and perform songs from the perspective of the opposite gender. Richard Shindell does this a lot, some of his best songs are women's stories in first person, from Mary Magdalene to assorted women waiting at home during wartime.
