I don't think I've ever seen the SV/Firefly crossover, so if you do remember the title of it, I'd love to know about it.
Woe! I remembered where I found it (a LJ user="crack_van"> crossover rec) and that post tells me it is, "The Things I Cannot Change" by emeraldsedai.
But the link in the rec post leads nowhere -- the archive is gone and when I checked emeraldsedai's LJ, the only post referring to the story is flocked. (I can't believe that's even the story in that one post, either, because this sucker is 65,000 words, give or take.) The archive page can be accessed via the Wayback Machine but of the 8 embedded links on the page for the 8 parts of the story, 7 appear to be fine, but Part 7 wasn't caught.

Anyway. I can send you the file if you'd like. It's quite a story -- a *lot* more angsty than I usually read, but it's hot, intriguingly plotted and beautifully written, and it's stayed with me for a long time (er, except for, you know, the title and author).
I sincerely hope there'd be flamethrowers involved.
God, yes. I've considered a flame thrower, but they have unfortunate side effects on wood frame apartment buildings.
