I think my mum's Main Thing was really photography. Cue the frequent cries of 'could you just stand still a minute/balance on that log/smile', followed by 'Oh, do we have to?' She's still on the search for the perfect hobby though - every now and again she gets that look in her eye and goes, 'Maybe I'll get a loom...'
Or maybe we just spent a lot of time hiding from our craft-ridden mothers, reading time travel stories.
Although I'm keen on your first theory, this does sound strangely familiar...
I recently discovered just how deeply the time travel kink is buried in me when I got addicted to Diana Gabaldon's Outlander books. They're about someone who goes back in time, omg!
What adjectives are more appropriate? *prepares to take notes*
Ok, right. Let me think...
1. INCREDIBLY FULL OF ANGST! At one point, due to Alien Stuff, we get to hear Ianto's Inner Emo Monologue of Pain, which is hilarious, and involves rats chewing his tummy or something.
2. Incompetent. They have a habit of accidentally getting locked in their sekrit headquarters, and all the cool alien stuff they find ends up getting destroyed or locked away because of being Too Dangerous. Almost all the trouble they get into is All Their Own Fault.
3. Socially Inept. Because they spend so much time in their dark netherworld of Sinister Alien Stuff. The main way they try and interact with other people is by having sex with them and then angsting about it in the dark.
4. Slightly Unpleasant. Mainly Owen, who is Head of Unpleasantness.
5. Inconsistently Characterised. Which is cool, because it means they can never be out of character!
6. Sexually Confused. All of them. Which is quite handy for fic writers.
7. Lovable. I just remembered that Ianto does occasionally get slightly lovable. It's all part of his handily inconsistent characterisation.
All this, is meant with affection, you understand. Kind of. :)
