I would highly recommend a Canon of any sort as I've had three of them (upgrades - never because one broke) and I love how simple the interface is to use.

If you already have a different device that uses some sort of removeable storage (Compact Flash, memory stick, SD cards) you might want to narrow down your search by what cameras use that storage type. For example, both my PDA and my camera use the Compact Flash and so I can swap cards between them and if I need the extra memory for either device, there is a good chance there will be some extra left over on the other device's card.
