My first watching-a-vid-without-understanding experience was much like yours too: so frustrating -- obviously the vidders were trying to tell me something, but I just couldn't understand it! My reaction was surprisingly strong, too. Perhaps I've got used to being around people who talk about things I can relate to and understand in fandom. We share amazing things that outsiders don't understand; when suddenly I felt like an outsider myself, it was tough. Fortunately perseverance paid off and now I understand a bit more.
