Wellington, as I understand it, is one of the better bits of NZ to live in. I think it has a bit of what a USian would call a "college town" feel. Mind you I haven't been there, so that's secondhand. But I can advise against Auckland, which is the only NZ city I've visited, for a whole 8 hours on one occasion. It was kinda dull.
