WE LOVE YOU, EDWARD

The earthling is at a point in his life where he can go to restaurants, but it works better for everyone if, after I give my order (often to BB to relay to the waiter), the earthling and I go wander around outside until BB texts me to say the food has come.

Obviously, this means we pick restaurants based in part on the outside having nice places to walk. Tonight, we ate in one that's near a theater. There is a lot of nice landscaping, and a pedestrian area, and also there are multiple fountains. This means it is Earthlingland, basically. So the earthling and I callously abandoned BB to do whatever it is she does while waiting for the food, and went to visit the fountains.

Except immediately we noticed that something was different. There were - people. All over. Like they were camping. After some study, I figured out that they were more or less in a line, and that the line ended near the movie theater. I texted BB this strange news, and while I waited for her response, I inspected them further.

They were almost all female.

They were mostly young. (Although there were a few middle-aged ladies out there, too. I salute you, middle-aged ladies! Own your love!)

They were - oh. They were wearing TEAM JACOB and TEAM EDWARD t-shirts.

I carefully inspected the theater marquee, and observed that these people were almost certainly in line - at four in the afternoon - for a 3:00 a.m. IMAX showing of Eclipse, which is, for those of you on Mars (which I kind of was, I guess; I had no idea this was coming out), the latest movie in the Twilight Saga.

And, you guys, it was so awesome. Because I cannot remember the last time that I saw a lineup like that, of pretty much all fangirls, all young, all just - being fans, out there in public, like they had a total right to do it. Usually that is a privilege reserved for teenaged and twenty-something boys and sports fans! And they were so cute, all happy and waiting to see their own true love. (Which, admittedly, is not one I know much about; I know that Edward is a sparkly vampire, Bella is a clumsy mortal, and Jacob is a werewolf. I mean, Jacob doesn't even get an adjective, that's how little I know about Twilight.) And wearing their t-shirts proclaiming their allegiance to Jacob or Edward. (I guess there is no Team Bella? Or is that not how that works?) I kind of felt like I had found my people, even though there was no one wearing a t-shirt reading TEAM EDWARD DOES JACOB, which is, let's be honest, probably what my actual people would be wearing.

And, remember, I was there with the earthling, which meant that my first and foremost thought was: I am glad these t-shirts are all text only. And the second I thought that, of course, I noticed three girls with identical shirts that said TEAM EDWARD on the back but had full color renditions of Edward's face (and let me tell you how amused I am that I, even though I cannot recognize any faces, have come to know the outline of Edward's hair so well I can mostly recognize his; this is the price I pay for having an earthling) on the front.

The earthling noticed this shortly after I did. His first reaction was to try to join the line, and after I hauled him away, he stopped directly in front of the girls with full-color Edward and went: *staaaaaare*. Such was the force of his laser-like stare that the girls actually noticed him after a while and stopped talking in those slightly-too-loud voices that fangirls use when they get together (although I did not hear the word "cock" once, which was strange for me). "He likes your shirts," I offered, and they gave the uncertain giggles you hear from girls who are not entirely sure they get the joke but are pretty sure they are the punch line - you know the giggle, the one that says, "I'm such a good sport that I'm willing to laugh along with you as you laugh at me." But, no, girls! I was entirely sincere! My son did like your shirts, and he was probably wishing that they made Edward shirts in 2T, because he is devoted and dedicated to his membership in Team Edward. (Or, as it apparently must be written, TEAM EDWARD.)

Eventually, I managed to tow the earthling away by reminding him that there was a fountain calling his name. (Sorry, Pattinson. Awesome you may be, but fountains are even better.) And I spent the rest of the evening just a little more happy than I would otherwise have been. Because, okay, they may not share my precise interests, but I still felt great kinship to those girls, out there caring enough about fictional characters to line up twelve hours in advance to see them, visibly blissed out on that potent neurotransmitter cocktail fans on the cusp of a major fannish event experience. They cared enough to wear t-shirts with their favorite fictional character's name on them. They cared enough to bring copies of their Twilight Saga books to read out loud to each other while they waited in line to see the Twilight Saga movie. They cared enough that when the extra security guards (yes, the theater had laid on extra security guards, possibly because they feared some sort of confrontation between TEAM EDWARD and TEAM JACOB, and those were some confused-looking security guards, let me just add) came over to try to move their line around a little, at least one of them tried to get a guard to declare an allegiance to Jacob. (He didn't feel it, apparently.)

It was just. It was wonderful and awesome and adorable. And as I sit here, with my sleeping earthling in the next room, I am thinking of those girls still in line waiting for Edward and Bella and Jacob, and I am thinking: you go, girls. I hope the movie is everything you want it to be.

Oh, and girls? Please don't laugh along with people you think are laughing at you. Nothing you're doing is stupid or embarrassing. You care about something. You love something. It's important to you, and that makes it valuable. If people think that's funny? Please, please: just tell them to go fuck themselves. (Unless they are following a little boy who is staring at you in great awe, because that would be me, and trust me, I'm not laughing. And neither is the earthling. He thinks you're wonderful. Unless you're on TEAM JACOB, of course.)

Although I hated Twilight before it was cool (seriously, I read the first book back in 2005, when it had just come out and all I knew was that it had vampires. I have CRED.), I have seen the first two movies in drinking-game related contexts, and probably would have been dragged to see the third in the same context had I not gotten a job in China this summer. My sole condition was that I be allowed to go in a DOUBLE-TEAM JACOB shirt.

[identity profile] tartanshell.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
he was probably wishing that they made Edward shirts in 2T, because he is devoted and dedicated to his membership in Team Edward.

A quick Google confirmed what I already suspected:

You are never, ever too young for Team Edward. (http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=team+edward+toddler+shirt&ech=1&psi=jb4qTKKcFsGutgfB1Mm6CQ12778696821110&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=p74qTK6hLoP98AaO2NjUCA&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=3&sqi=2&ved=0CC8QrQQwAg)

A place near me is screening all the Star Trek films outdoors, in order, one per week, for the summer. This week was The One With the Whales, so my friends and I went down.

I mean, first of all, it's Star Trek. Second, these are the movies that have been out for two decades. So we're very far from traditional uses of the word "cool" here.

I was so delighted with the range of people. We had old people, young people, baby people (accompanied by slightly older people), and an awesomely even mix of girls and guys. I was so happy at the number of women there. I wanted to take a picture and show Spike TV so they'll stop insisting Star Trek is a Man's TV show. There were people on dates, and people in groups. Most wore dorky t-shirts, but quite a few were clearly coming from the office.

I was so stupidly happy to be a part of that. I mean, I've said some not nice things about Twilight in my time. It's definitely not one of my many fandoms of choice. But being a fan is absolutely wonderful. I love that feeling. And yeah. Good for them for enjoying it as well.

I semi-accidentally watched the second film last week (after semi-accidentally reading the first book a couple summers ago), and while mostly it just made me /o\, it did also put me firmly in the camp of Jacob & Edward ought to get it on. And Bella/Alice might be acceptable, too.

However, I want to say thank you for reminding me about the (less-slashy, presumably) good side to all of this -- the love and delight and happiness, in the form of the Earthling. :)

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2010-07-01 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! And I totally do love the delight and the happiness, even if I'm, you know, a liiiiittle surprised people aren't smushing Jacob and Edward together.

[identity profile] swan-bite.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
hahaha that's lovely. it's so true that we're always ridiculing girls ("teenage girl" is code for bad taste and triviality) for their pursuits and nobody thinks to question a boy's right to love his games.

when i was a teenager i watched "My So Called Life" and i slashed Daria with Jane so Twilight is a bit incomprehensible for me, but to each their very own. i'm passionate about very crappy stuff too, because i pick the meat and throw away the bones so i understand that aspect of it and-- it's hard as hell not to fall in love with fangirls. to see so many girls united for any reason always makes me feel giddy with pleasure.

TEAM JACOB! no idea if he's actually better than TEAM ED! (i just cut down his rumored sex appeal by 50%) but i'm going for the whole werewolf solidarity. <3

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2010-07-01 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"teenage girl" is code for bad taste and triviality

Yeah. This has started to make me twitch, to be honest - teenage girls are not the symbols of all that is shallow and silly and over-emotional, people!

TEAM JACOB! no idea if he's actually better than TEAM ED! (i just cut down his rumored sex appeal by 50%) but i'm going for the whole werewolf solidarity. <3

Sorry, I have to stay on TEAM EDWARD. The earthling would disown me if I didn't.

[identity profile] harriet-spy.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
Jacob doesn't even get an adjective

Having seen the trailers for the movies, I believe I can clarify this. The adjective for Jacob is: shirtless.
ext_3450: readhead in a tophat. She looks vaguely like I might, were I young and pretty. (fantasy football)

adjective for werewolf

[identity profile] jenna-thorn.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking "half naked" but shirtless is ever so much more polite, yes.

Agreeing with above comment, definitely "shirtless Jacob."

Also just got back from midnight screening on the east coast -- my group did not have t-shirts, but we declared ourselves "Team Sexy Werewolf Gangbang" after the last movie.

We also spent the entire movie CHUGGING alcohol and making fun of the really terrible bits. Since the entire movie is terrible, I spent most of it laughing so hard I cried. Seriously. Multiple times. That said, this was a lovely post, and I hope my inebriated enjoyment of the movie did not ruin anyone else's time.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
Team Sexy Werewolf Gangbang sounds - worrisome. (But then, I am always worried whenever there's a werewolf in a visual medium. They're always so terrible looking!)

And laughing so hard you cry is always fun. I support drunken mirthful shenanigans!

Fandom is awesome. And those young girls probably didn't even recognise what they were a part of. It reminds me, at 16, a massive fan of Duran Duran, waiting under the yacht Drum England, dry docked in Auckland, wearing my Notorious t-shirt and my home-made Duran Duran skirt, for days on end, for a chance to see Simon le Bon. Someone laughed at me on the bus on the way home, but I didn't care because I had his freshly-signed signature on my back.

Your post also made me think of a story one of my workmates told me the other day. He'd gone to the midnight premiere of Star Wars, Episode 1, fully kitted out as Luke Skywalker, complete with light-sabre. He'd sat down in the theatre until the previews started, to avoid the scrum at the popcorn counter, then gone back out when it was quiet to get snacks. He was alone, paying for his popcorn when a fully costumed Darth Vader emerged from the theater, presumably with the same idea. My friend was alone in the vast lobby, save for the food counter guy, so he vaulted the velvet rope and drew his light sabre. So did Darth Vader, and they had a full-on light sabre battle all through the Hoyts lobby, LOL.

Fandom is awesome.

I just came back from seeing Eclipse.

I don't like the Twilight movies and this was no exception, but it was worth the 2 hour movie for the 6 hours of hanging out with friends in a line full of fangirls.

I think I'd have more fun if any of friends shipped Edward/Jacob... it has crossed *my* mind;)

That is how I feel about the fans camped out days in advance for the red carpet premier for Eclipse - I've seen a lot of people baffled at someone who would spend days of their time waiting for a couple of minutes of seeing the stars on the carpet, but to me it's understandable because its several days of celebrating something you love while surrounded by people who feel the same way you do. The atmosphere of shared love is something to be enjoyed too!

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2010-07-03 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)

I remember going to the local (tiny) mall not long after Final Fantasy: Advent Children came out and went into one of those make-your-own teddy bear places to get something for my niece. The girl at the counter had made her own Sephiroth t-shirt, complete with iron-ons and glitter. We squealed over all the prettiness, and I showed her my homemade Fruits Basket (it's an anime, very cute) necklace. I've never waited in line for hours at a movie theater, but I remember how pumped up the crowd was at the midnight showing of the new Superman movie, everyone showing off their various Superman regalia, and the ushers handing out free movie posters.
