Hockey RPF fandom poll!

Over on Twitter, people had questions about hockery RPF fandom folks, so we put together a poll. (When in doubt, TICKYBOXES. That is my motto.) If you've read/watched/listened to hockey RPF fanworks, please come take the poll! (And if you know anyone who's in the fandom, please tell them about it, too. Some data good, more data better.)

And this seems like a good place/time to ask a question - I've been into hockey as a sport for awhile, and accidentally got sucked into hockey as a fandom on Tumblr and AO3 right before the playoffs this year. I've sort of unsuccessfully been looking for the fandom on DW ever since. Help? Please?

I also got sucked in during the playoffs, and maybe I'm wrong, but it doesn't seem like there *is* a significant fandom presence on DW? There are individuals posting, but not big comms, etc. Seems like most people are on twitter/tumblr and the occasional commentfic fests are on LJ. I think there was a post on the anonmeme a while back where people listed the hockey rpf twitters they follow--if you ask over there maybe one of the tracking anons can dig it up for you.

Oh, man, I wish I had a better answer for you. One of the reasons I'm on Twitter more than DW now is just that hockey RPF fandom has very little presence here. It's split between Tumblr and Twitter, as far as I can tell, with some stuff left on LJ. Sadness.

There's a bunch of active hockey comms on LJ in the season! Or there was last year. We have a weekly round up comm, a game day comm, an encyclopedia comm. My active flist is about 50% hockey, and it's growing! I don't use DW, so I have no idea here, :/

As someone who once wrote data collection instruments (surveys!) for a living: in my experience, most people loathe a forced choice and thus prefer tickyboxes. Fandom, though, loves tickyboxes with an all-consuming passion that is basically one of the great and enduring romances of our time. Fandom/tickybox: forever OTP.

I know well fandom's love of the tickybox. If I didn't want multiple answers, I would use radio buttons. You know what I always say: One fangirl, four tickyboxes: three tickys.

Took the poll, but would like to add a bit of bonus info- my being in hockey RPF fandom is all your fault, cause of the fandom primer you posted. And then this last season, I actually watched hockey, which is only sort of your fault (I love watching sports, it was inevitable).

It's weird because I'm never sure what level constitutes being in the'fandom' as opposed to just something you watch/read. So I'd read a couple of hockey stories before and couldn't have told you anything about them, other than, hey they were a pretty good read, then your primer and I'm like, oh! those are the guys. Usually if I actual create something fannish I'll cop to being in the fandom and after your primer, a ton of stories and watching the games

*g* I have to admit it was the mullet that convinced me that hockey might be the most fun sport ever, so it had to make it into the drawing.

And yep, I'm deep in. I think it was you who commented something about capgeek and I was like 'that's crazy, I'll never do that, pshaw, what do I care about contracts.' Next thing I know, I'm freaking out about salary caps, trade deadlines and NMC.

That's just it! It would make this awesome spread-of-infection map. WE COULD PINPOINT VECTORS. Identifying Fangirl Zero would probably be out of our reach, but at the very least we could isolate key infection points and determine how this hockey thing entered our fair community.

I think it might be tricky to get all the way back to Fangirl Zero, because I get the impression that a lot of the pre-2010 hockey fandom people have drifted away or gone to their own corner of the world to do their own thing and so aren't around so much (or at all) fandom-wise these days. Though maybe some of them are still active on twitter/tumblr (I cannot speak to this as I have both of those but never seem to get around to using them).

But you could definitely identify some key infection points, which would still be fascinating.

LAKE. LAKE AND HER FUCKING SOULBOND FIC. She is the master at it. The day that came out I was like "THERE IS A HOCKEY FANDOM?" and then I thought about it and was like "of course there is, if we write about soccer players, there's people writing about hockey players."

You do realize that people don't have to be born in an English speaking country to be in an English speaking fandom, right?
Separating Europe into "Ireland", "UK", "other" and "Eastern Europe" is problematic (speaking from a purely empirical standpoint) since the definition is vague. Why not just say "Europe"?

Interesting! I was surprised to see that 97% of respondents were in Hockey RPF fandom. I had thought it would be lower.

I think people who aren't at least somewhat interested in the fandom didn't bother to take the poll, but I know some folks struggled with whether or not they were truly IN the fandom. Interesting that most of them came down on the side of yes.
