I couldn't find five novels on my shelves that didn't have some kind of minor error or flaw.
that's also true! but there's a whole other element to live up to in fanfiction if your readers are familiar with the source material. original fiction might be held to higher standards in a lot of other ways (i think i do hold it to higher standards personally, at least most of the time), but usually it doesn't have to compete with the reader's prior knowledge of the universe. and there are so many elements of canon to be addressed to satisfy me--i know other people view it differently and don't see any problem with, say, a totally humourless story based on a comedy show.
