Poll: Fandoms I Have Loved: Reader Input

I'm just curious, really. I have a lot of half-finished FIHL posts sitting on my hard drive - all the ones listed below are somewhere between 1% and 80% complete - and I guess, now that I've finished with Smallville, I'm feeling a little...unfocused.

Pointers, anyone?

ETA: I have already done (in reverse order) Smallville, Stargate: Atlantis, The Fast and the Furious, Oz, Ocean's 11, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Master & Commander, due South, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Sentinel, and Lord of the Rings. Those can all be found at my Fandoms I Have Loved tag.

ETA2: Allow me to smack my forehead in a painful fashion, because I completely forgot to put on the poll two others that I have in progress: Harry Potter and the DCU. Memo to me: no more posting polls late at night.

[Poll #720893]

As it happens, I just found out that Kurtzman & Orci, the writing team that brought you Porkules (and some fun, slightly less insane episodes, too) have been hired to write the Star Trek prequel movie, with a younger Kirk and Spock at the Academy.

Okay, I admit I can't agree with you on the Little Men thing, mostly because I never read it. (By the time I was halfway through Little Women, I just...I couldn't face the concept of a sequel. I couldn't even face the rest of the book. Yes, it's true: I preferred Eight Cousins to Little Women. My shame is great.)

But I so totally hear you on DiR and Scrubs. These are canons that everyone should love. And write lots of fan fiction for.

*waits hopefully for the Fandom Gods to make it so*

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
So your argument is that:

1. It is indeed true that the DCU and insanity are closely linked, and
2. This is not necessarily a bad thing.

And if the insanity truly leads to Stewardess!Tim, I would be forced to agree with you. Nothing that causes people to write Stewardess!Tim could be bad.

the writers themselves regard the past as a sort of strong suggestion, rather than, you know, immutable events

I'm trying to figure out whether I should laugh or cry at this statement. Because: oh my god so true.

Netflix is a force for evil. I'm growing ever more certain of this. It makes it so easy to say, "Well, maybe I'll just try one or two. I mean, why not? What could be the harm?" And, tragically, you don't realize until much too late that the potential for harm is immense. At least, I don't figure it out until I'm even more behind on my sleep, and Best Beloved is openly mocking me over dinner.

*sighs sadly*

And we truly don't live all that far from each other; you live in Thousand Oaks, right? And I live near Torrance. We are both citizens of the conglomeration of dinky suburbs that, united, became a teeming metropolis! With freeways that resemble mall parking lots at Christmastime!

*swells with civic pride*

SN's unavail on DVD or VHS in the UK (curses).

This is a very unfair situation, and you should clearly protest. Possibly with violence. (I'm not sure who the violence should be directed toward, though. The gods of DVD distribution, perhaps?)

How on earth do you recc things when you haven't seen the show?

Well, most of the time I haven't seen the show, because - um. Typically I get a better understanding of the canon by reverse engineering it from the fan fiction than I get if I do watch the show. I know for lots of people it doesn't work that way, but - well, TV and I have never been friends, and I just do better with the written word, so for me fan fiction renders all these shows I would never have understood magically accessible.

In short: parallax and triangulation. These are the weapons we use to back engineer the canon from the FF. And powerful weapons they are, too.

Perhaps it has more lowkey fans than are apparent.

I am coming to this conclusion myself. And, really, I could not be happier.

Your posts are a joy.

*beams*

Thank you! And, yes, with flattery like that, you should *totally* comment more often.

*heart swells three sizes*

*head follows suit*

*nods*

I have incredible sympathy with your explaining-the-DCU dilemma. Comic book canons are like nothing else on earth, truly. ([livejournal.com profile] brown_betty said that the canon DCU writers regard the past merely as a strong suggestion, and I truly did not know whether to weep or laugh or embrace her for putting her finger so unerringly on the problem. I mean, how do you summarize a canon when no part of it ever remains the same?)

Sleep? We're supposed to sleep?

We definitely are neighbors, just under an hour according to Mapquest. You should come to Game Night some Friday :)

Love your icon.

Little Men is a little preachy, when I read it now, but I loved it as a little kid. There are these friends, Dan and Nat, and Dan is big and burly, and Nat is slim and delicate, and Dan takes care of Nat and stoically takes the blame for him when Nat is unjustly accused of stealing money, and --

Er, I'll shut up. But even if you didn't like Little Women, you might like Little Men. (I didn't like Little Women at all.)

Those damn Fandom Gods don't keep a very good timetable. I've been waiting for both fandoms for a while now.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, first. Before I say anything else, I have to note that I love your name - I meant to tell you before, but, you know. Best intentions blah blah. Sneakers is a marvelous movie.

Come to think of it, there should be Sneakers FF. Lots and lots of it.

*sulks*

the vaguely gay fandom of my heart

Yes! This is precisely the right description of SN.

*feels all warm inside just thinking about Danny and Casey*

*eyes you*

You know, I'm starting to suspect that all you DCU people just want to see me twitch. You do know that the fandom is entirely summaryproof, right?

Because we have now determined that I will follow wherever you lead.

You don't want to give me such power. It goes to my head, really it does.

*begins scheming*

(Side note: for some reason, your comment caused two fandoms to fuse in my mind, and suddenly - okay, you know the scene in Hercules (it's in the Widow Twanky vid) where the Amazons are chasing him down the hill? I suddenly pictured that happening to Sheppard and McKay. My head is a fun place to be at times, I tell you.)

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Are you kidding? You're kidding, right? I mean, about the Star Trek movie? Because...wow. Wow. It'd be like Young Hercules, except - Young Kirk. OMG.

(I just looked them up on the IMDb and learned that they also wrote Mission: Impossible III.

I am very very tempted to see MI III now.)

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
anything you write will make so many people so happy to read.

*blushes*

*allows praise to go to her head*

*begins plotting to conquer all of fandom*

But still, I'd be curious about Dark Is Rising.

Have you read the Dark Is Rising books? Because if you haven't, you so totally should.

*pimps*

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
This poll has given me such amazing love for fandom. My people! I have found my people!

The only RL people I know who love DiR are Best Beloved and my sister. (Well, plus [livejournal.com profile] makesmewannadie, who I met through fandom but now know in RL.) But here - wow.

*tears of joy*

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well, since I read Dæmonology, I've been trying to fuse HDM with every fandom under the sun. Mostly for the pleasure of assigning dæmons to all my favorite characters. So I'd give quite a bit just for more HDM fusion.

And I totally second [livejournal.com profile] brown_betty - is there a fandom for HDM? I mean, with FF that is good? 'Cause if so, OMG please please please give me links.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
*admires your icon*

But is it actually possible to make Hercules' pants gayer? I thought this was basically the fandom that others pointed to when they needed to define gay pants.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
*waves at you*

*shows off own dS icon*

Thank you, both for voting and loving my dS summary. DS is one of my main comfort fandoms. Love! Mountie! Love! Cop!

*dreamy sigh*

(And you are quite right about the story - I think Ray and Iolaus could bond about being the scrappy blond sidekick.

"The worst part," Ray said, slouching even lower over his beer, "is that he thinks he's immortal."

"The worst part of mine," Iolaus said, "is that he probably is."

Ray patted Iolaus' shoulder in sympathy. "Okay. You win that one." He waved at the bartender and ordered another round.

And it would be fantastic to see Hercules and Fraser forced to make conversation. I'd pay to see that.)

Would I kid about something so important (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117941815?categoryid=10&cs=1&s=h&p=0)?

"Project, to be penned by Abrams and "MI3" scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, will center on the early days of seminal "Trek" characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer space mission."

Aw. K/S, my first fandom! And I particularly like their use of 'seminal'. *is twelve*

[identity profile] lolaraincoat.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
I read them! But I think I was ten or so, and that was a long, long time ago, so I would need to re-read.

[identity profile] amorettea.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
To me, the first pair of gay pants on tv were those belonging to JIm West of Wild, Wild West. So tight they split when he sat down. He wore little short coats to show off those pants. Ah. . .Jim West's gay pants. . .nostalgia. . .

[identity profile] janet-carter.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! Sneakers is such a good movie. And, wow, I hadn't thought about it before, but it leaves so many possibilities open for pre- and post-movie stories. *joins sulking*

[identity profile] nessreader.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
You may be onto something. I prefer sv fanon to the show (but who wouldn't?) And sadly, the gender politics of K/S are (actually, here they're competing against the gender politics of Capt Kirk, so not really a fair fight either)

I daresay you have this DiR link already, but just in case:
Bran/Will (http://kestrelsan.sockiipress.org/dirlinks.html)

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-05 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Well, in all probability I'll do all of these, and I definitely plan to do Scrubs. I've been watching the canon (pathetically, I've been driven to watching the canon because of lack of FF), and I love it.

It just might not be the next time - not so much for voting reasons, as it'll take me a while to work through the entire canon and then digest it enough to summarize it. (Uh. Do not take the metaphor I accidentally started with the word "digest" to its logical conclusion, please. Ew.)

But, yeah, I'd love to see people talking about this fandom. There should be so much for FF for it. What's there is choice, but there's not enough.

*whimpers*

*twitches*

Yes, DS is wonderful. And there are so many great authors, it's hard to pick your fav!

I'm loving the F/V/K movement that is going on there now... very very HOT!

BWAHAHA! I love that little snippet. I can hear that convo.

You're right about Herc and Fraser- that would be amusing. :)

I may have to try that...
