Real Life: News

So, hi, y'all. I'm pregnant. (Twelve weeks, due at the beginning of June, we don't know the sex yet. Judging from the ultrasound, I would say it is an alien implanted in my uterus by devious means. However, unless we make some major, speedy advances in space travel, it will probably be born on this planet, so I choose to think of it as a future earthling. Crazy optimism, I know.) This could occasion some posting on real-life topics from me, which I know is not what most of you are here for. So, I will be creating a filter. It's opt-in; you don't have to say anything if you don't want on.

Posts to the filter could be frequent. They could be short. They could be unfunny. They could be extremely boring. They could be non-existent. They could be excessively personal or contain mention of bodily fluids. I have no way to tell, because this is new territory for me.

So, keeping that in mind, do you want on the filter? A handy poll is provided for your clicking convenience!

[Poll #1097994]

Oops, and here I just posted the same correction. Except "donor insemination" is the preferred term for humans.

See, I didn't know that.

Although, I am one of those folks who gets oddly stroppy about not using different terms for animal and human versions of the same thing, and will probably not switch my vocab around in this case. (Humans ARE animals, you see, and I dislike setting us apart in vocabulary. But I happily use the word "autopsy"! I contain multitudes. And am avoiding doing work. I should, erm, go do that now.)

I use autopsy for both humans and animals, not necropsy, so I'm with you on that one. The problem with "artificial" insemination is that it suggests a fake baby, an ersatz child. But you can't use "donor" for animals because it's not like they exactly had a choice--it's like saying a chicken was an egg donor for contributing to my breakfast. "Assisted reproduction" is too broad.... Sorry, I'm blathering and avoiding work too.

But the real reason to use "donor insemination" is that it's the only way to get useable results back from Google on the subject.
