Poll: Crossovers, Oh My

Recently, I was moderately flabbergasted to come upon a Highlander x Yami no Matsuei crossover. I had one of those moments of staring blankly at the computer screen, trying to figure out if I had experienced a sudden linguistic disconnect, and maybe in this language "Highlander x Yami no Matsuei crossover" actually meant "now we all get cake" or something, because surely such a thing, defined as I understood it, was totally impossible.

And then I read it, and realized that, no, it isn't impossible, and I was forced once again to reflect on the fact that Highlander seems to be a fandom that is just very open to crossovers. I know that's partly because, hey, you've got 5,000 years of mostly unfilled Methos backstory, and who is to say he didn't pick up a young Christopher Keller in a gay bar? He could have! He could also have spent fifteen years traveling around with Doctor Who. I mean, it's not like he'd necessarily bring either of those things up in conversation. But also, just, the Highlander universe seems to be unusually smooshy - it is totally willing to cozy up to, maybe even move in with, other canons, as I'm reminded every time the HL newsletter comes out and most of the new stories are crossovers.

Naturally, I got to wondering: what other fandoms are particularly crossover-friendly? And that led, inevitably, to thoughts of those fandoms that are much, much harder to work into crossovers. Which led to thoughts of AUs, which in turn took me to a terrifying meta place, and Best Beloved had to come talk me down. "How about a poll?" she said. "Polls are fun! And, also, you can probably finish one before you fall asleep." (Whereas with actual meta - at the rate I'm currently finishing stuff, I'd have it ready for posting in, um, 2012 or thereabouts, assuming no delays for rain.)

So perhaps you would like to write my meta for me? I offer ticky boxes as incentive!

Ok, I just had to comment because it has long been my policy that Methos is THE crossover character. I mean, he could plausibly show up in almost any fandom. Bonus points if the story is told from the non-Methos point of view and if that POV passes through the story oblivious to Methos' less than mortal qualities. I have no idea about any other fandoms, but I have always dreamed happily of a world where methos crossovers were their own fandom. XD

I have had long and very pleasant conversations about how Methos, Jack Harkness, and various other long-lived folks should form some sort of club. Or at least make out a lot.

[identity profile] pentapus.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee. Though there'd be the tricky fact that such a gathering would probably be the textbook example of Things Methos Prefers to Avoid. :D

I once tried to write a story where Lazarus Long put together a special "oldest man in the universe only" club room at the cross-universe convention. :D (But I kept finding more characters to toss in. And then they tried to turn it into an orgy and Aziraphale walked out.)

If you EVER. EVER. see a Methos/Jack crossover . . . I WANT THIS DESPERATELY.

Methos is the ultimate crossover Little Black Dress.

Hee. He is.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with Methos as the crossover character, and frankly I do think Methos crossovers are their own fandom. I am in that fandom! And apparently you are, too! So, voila: it is a fandom!

And I have, um, quite a number of Methos-related crossovers lurking unfinished on my hard drive. So, hey, apparently I am even writing in the fandom.

Write! Write! Pretty please?

[identity profile] pentapus.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, please write. Or tease us with unfinished snippets. Or, you know, rec.

But my greatest, most secret HL crossover shame is actually - I made John Sheppard an immortal. Solely so that I could put him in WWI as a fighter pilot. I turned John Sheppard into Eddie Rickenbacker, pretty much. And I didn't even put Methos in.

*has great shame*

See, this is why I don't finish or post my HL crossovers, Methos-laden or otherwise: they are all secret shame type stories. This is possibly partly why HL crossovers are so alluring: no matter what you would love to see (that you are totally too ashamed to admit), you can make it happen.

Yes! I love that idea. Has nothing to do with the fact that most everything I write is some sort of Methos xover. Really! [g]

Death from Discworld, Death from Sandman, Azirophale&Crowley, and any Doctor Who are similar: they're immortal (or immortal time-travellers), they go with everything. A whole closet of little black dresses!

[identity profile] pentapus.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, very true! Oh, I would like to see Sandman's Death around more. I think my favorite part of those sort of crossover characters is the crossover characters never becoming aware of who the immortal/timetraveller/whatsit is. Methos is especially ripe for that. :)

Methos is the entire reason I started reading crossovers in the first place. Methos is my OTC for Highlander and I wanted to read fanfic about him. However, I am not a Duncan/Methos fan at all so my choices were limited and crossovers were a natural place to go to.

[identity profile] pentapus.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm also not a Duncan/Methos fan at all (though oddly it is the only show with a huge fanon slash pairing where I will be watching and say, "Jesus, that was a bit homoerotic.")

I wonder if there's a big list of Methos crossovers somewhere. I did end up collecting a list of my favorite gen HL fics, though they're all old so have probably read them already. :D

[identity profile] ceteramisto.livejournal.com 2008-04-27 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
I may not be a fan of Duncan/Methos, but I can certainly see where those who are fans are coming from. It's been awhile since I've read any HL fic and I love rereading anyway.

If there is a list of Methos crossover fics I would devour it.

So nice to find some company there [g] You're right, it does limit your choices. I'm only half joking when I say I write Methos stories so I have something new to read!

I would live in this world. :)

[identity profile] pentapus.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I am trying word a witty sort of grabby-handed plea for fic then, as a natural route to this Methos-crossover-fandom world, but I think I want it too much. Wit, it fails me. XD

I started out in XF and HL, and the Methos/Krycek crossover was practically a fandom in itself.

And we would say that Krycek is the 'little black dress' of fandom (looks good and works in pretty much any situation), but if that's so, HL is the great pair of black pumps that absolutely make any outfit, and are comfortable enough to wear all day. And Methos is a huge part of this.

[identity profile] pentapus.livejournal.com 2008-04-26 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha. I like your metaphor.
