Dear Yuletide Writer
Dear Yuletide Writer,
Hi! I love you. I just wanted to start out by saying that.
Also, my requests are MUCH LESS CRAZY than last year (with the exception of the request that's always there and always crazy, and since you've seen my request list I'm sure you know what I mean), so that's a very good thing, right?
Don't leave me, Yuletide Writer!
Sorry. I'm trying to make you like me and want to write for me, because my writer last year defaulted without notice and my writer the year before that defaulted with notice, and I am starting to feel like maybe I have a certain aura of undesirability about me when it comes to Yuletide. I got seriously awesome stories both times - I always get seriously awesome stories - but I worry that I, you know, have driven people away with my crazy wrongness.
So: please stay! I am a nice person and a nice recipient. I can provide references if desired.
And now I will tell you about me and my requests in excessive and disturbing length. If that's going to throw you off, no need to read. Instead I will just say: please please please do not harm children or animals in the story you write for me. Otherwise, follow your heart.
Me
If you're curious about what I like in fan fiction - this is mostly a recs journal. If it's recommended here, I loved it. So that's one resource.
But that might take more time than you have, so let me offer a summary for the busy Yuletide author on the go. I love:
There are three things that I think are awesome about this series.
I find what Konigsburg did in this book interesting; to me, she very clearly told us, "OH HAI THESE TWO ARE GAY," but she never actually said it. There's a lot she's not saying overtly in this book, a lot that she expects and enables the reader to infer, and I love that.
But, of course, I also want the overt text. Which is where fan fiction comes in!
I think Amedeo and William are adorable and sweet, but, you know, they're still kids. So I'd love to see them when they're older.
There's a huge difference between these two in terms of class and background, and I'd love to see how that plays out in their future relationship (or friendship, if slash is not something you can go for).
Pretty much anything else goes. I'd love to see more about the antiques business, more about history, more about art, more of their mothers, or more of their (very complicated relationships with) their fathers, but all this is totally optional. Mostly what I want is to see Amedeo and William growing up, and grown up - and maybe dealing with being queer with the same dignity and realism that Konigsburg gives them in the book.
Scrubs - Nick Murdoch/John Dorian
I love Scrubs for the humor, and also for the (do I get drummed off the cynics' block if I say humanity?) humanity inside the humor.
This is one of those rare TV fandoms where I've actually seen some of the canon, and some of what I have seen not only made me laugh but still makes me laugh when I remember it. And J.D.'s voice is what makes this show work a lot of the time. (I actually watched episodes of the show because I fell in love with the humor and the voice of it via fan fiction, and then there wasn't any more. I had no choice but to turn to canon.) So, you know, humor and voice: very important to me.
The humanity thing is equally important to me in this case, because I'm requesting a big ol' pile of romance, here. Nick! J.D.! A happy ending that involves the lovin'! So, you know, like the show, except more gay, with more stable romantic relationships, and a happy ending.
Oh, and two other notes: I am only vaguely canon compliant for the first and second seasons, and know virtually nothing about the later seasons, so do not feel constrained in any way. And, also - shameful confession time - I actually like Dr. Cox and Jordan together. They are my secret het OTP of love and barbed wire. So, you know, if you don't have to break them up or trample on Jordan, well, that will be even better for me.
RPF - Charles Baudelaire
These details are pretty much a repeat of last year. Because, well, I ask for this pretty much every year.
There's a reason why I always put this request fourth: it's certifiable. Or maybe I am. But still. I love Charles Baudelaire so much, and I find the world he describes in his poetry so fascinating, and I would love to see a story about him, especially if it's set in the world his poetry describes. (And, by the way - she wasn't in the character list, but if you want to include Jeanne Duval, by all means DO.) If you want to throw in a crossover, well, Angelus from the Jossverse seems obvious to me; in the Angel episode She he makes it clear he knew Baudelaire, and frankly that explains so much. But do whatever! The choice is yours!
I have no single favorite translation of his works; I think most of the translators rocked some of the poems and totally failed on others, so I kind of pick and choose. However, in case you're unaware of it, there is an awesome resource for Baudelaire's poetry online: fleursdumal.org. You can find translations of all the poems here, and there's at least one good one for almost all of them. I whole-heartedly recommend it.
(Oh, and I should note: I don't speak French. I know, I know, I'm totally pathetic, reading Baudelaire in translation. I own it. My point is - a realistic, period Paris background is desirable; I've done enough reading about Baudelaire that I would love that. But realistic language would be kind of a problem, since, you know, I couldn't read it.)
And, well - in general I love lighter, happier stories with happy endings. I crave the happy! Except here. Baudelaire's story is not happy, and neither is his ending, and I would in no way want you to change that. Go to town - go for creepy, go for tragic, go for crazy. Whatever you feel works. (Just, I know with Baudelaire it's tempting, but if you could try hard not to hurt animals or children, that would be awesome. Feel free to abuse Baudelaire all you want.) I will read with gratitude and wonder, and I will fully appreciate it, because Baudelaire's story is totally a lush, insane tragedy.
Hi! I love you. I just wanted to start out by saying that.

If you're curious about what I like in fan fiction - this is mostly a recs journal. If it's recommended here, I loved it. So that's one resource.
But that might take more time than you have, so let me offer a summary for the busy Yuletide author on the go. I love:
- Happy endings
- Humor
- Good grammar and spelling
- Snappy dialog
- Plot
- Point of view
- Smut
- Many, many other things
- Animal and child harm or death. These are my absolute deal-breaker squicks; I can't deal with them at all.
- Embarrassment
- Misogyny and gratuitous abuse of women.
- Incest. (This really should not be an issue with any of my requests, but, hey, I figure warning is always good.)
- Vastly underage or serious underage/overage explicit sex.
There are three things that I think are awesome about this series.
- The characters. I love Chen and Inari and Zhu Irzh, even if I cannot for the life of me figure out how to pronounce Zhu Irzh (I tend to go with Zoo Ers, but it sounds so much less demonic than it looks). I have special love for Inari, which is hard, because she doesn't appear in the books as much as the other two. I would especially love it if Inari got to be truly active - not reactive or passive - in your story.
And I firmly, firmly believe that the best possible outcome for the three of them would be a threesome of some description. Chen is just the right guy to be involved with two demons, since he's clearly kinked that way - he's even attracted to Zhu Irzh at one point because of his demonic nature. Zhu Irzh has a conscience that is only going to get him into trouble in Hell, but that might serve him nicely in an earthly relationship with a human and a very nice demon girl. And Inari obviously loves Chen a lot, but she might also enjoy a taste of home. - The concept and the world. I love the way Heaven and Hell are portrayed in this world. I am especially curious about what other cultures' Heavens and Hells might look like, so if you want to take me on a tour of one or more of those, that would be fabulous.
- The cases. Mysteries are awesome! When they are mixed up with theological matters and gods and demons and magic, they are even MORE awesome. I'm always up for more mystery.
I find what Konigsburg did in this book interesting; to me, she very clearly told us, "OH HAI THESE TWO ARE GAY," but she never actually said it. There's a lot she's not saying overtly in this book, a lot that she expects and enables the reader to infer, and I love that.

But I must comment, because WHAT WHAT WAIT WHAT. You have just edjumacated me about a new Konigsburg book I didn't know about. Must get.
And also, I live in hope that you will one day get your Baudelaire story. Because that would be a thing of incredible awesomeness and joy.
no subject
*g* I wholly advocate this. (Of course, taken to an extreme, this would allow me to find my Yuletide writer by process of elimination. Fortunately, fandom has never been that organized.)
You have just edjumacated me about a new Konigsburg book I didn't know about.
It's interesting! It's linked to a couple of her other books, but in this book specifically she - okay. My thoughts while reading went something like this:
OMG SO SLASHY.
Wait, these kids are like 12. I am going to hell!
...But, really, this is SO SLASHY. I think he just drew mental hearts around William's name.
HELL. I AM GOING THERE.
Wait. Wait. Is she doing this on purpose?
She is! She's TOTALLY doing this on purpose!
William and Amedeo, sitting in a tree...
And also, I live in hope that you will one day get your Baudelaire story.
ME TOO OMG. I mean, obviously, I hope for all these stories, but that story has the potential for such awesomeness! In hands that are not mine.

You make me want to read this one so much. But it is not out in paperback yet. My life, made of woe.

But I can't really see how you can go wrong with a prompt that includes the line 'Feel free to abuse Baudelaire all you want.'
*snerk* Normally, I wouldn't do that sort of prompt, but you kind of have to abuse Baudelaire. Life sure did.
no subject
(I don't request because I don't write, so I kind of depend on others to ask for things I'd like to see.)
no subject
*bounce bounce bounce bounce* I am in the happy state of Awaiting My Assignment! (That's followed by the Five Stages of Getting Your Assignment, which are followed by Yuletide Panic, which is followed, in the fullness of time, by an actual story. We hope.)
I don't request because I don't write, so I kind of depend on others to ask for things I'd like to see.
Then you should pimp, so other people are inclined to want the things you want! And comment, because if you comment a lot on stories you get to make requests for NYR, or at least last year people did. There is a Yuletide for everyone! (Although the first time I did Yuletide I had not completed ANY fan fiction. I just really really really wanted to participate. So even if you don't normally write, Yuletide might potentially be for you, although a sane person would try a NYR story first.)

Scrubs is the only one I know, and I've got no clue who Murdoch is, but I wanted to say that Dr. Cox/Jordon is my secret het OTP, too - omg their love is so sadistically dysfunctional!
Murdoch was in only one episode, episode 1.07 - he was the perfect doctor who kept besting J.D. at everything until he just couldn't cope with the stress and dropped out. And, in my opinion, he was totally hot for J.D. (I have friends who will back me up on this.)
But YAY for someone else who will admit to wanting Dr. Cox and Jordan together! See, my thinking is that they broke each other. Their fault lines match each other's. Plus, if you hook either of them up with someone else, well, that's just one more person who will get broken. Whereas together, they're so dysfunctional they actually sort of function. It's a conundrum! Involving a lot of bitter sarcasm!

Oh, hi. I just found your LJ and think that you have some nifty and interesting things to say, so I friended you. Hope you don't mind.

Clearly, I really need to read Inspector Chen books. I have one in my bookcase, even, patiently awaiting its turn...

I know! It's like one of those inspiring stories in Reader's Digest. We should write a book about our transformation from prompt wastrels to prompt queens!
And then we should conquer the mysteries of the story summary.

*giggles* It is probably something like Choo Erch (Irzh is a really weird word, though; is it supposed to be Chinese? I read the book but wasn't sure). Only 'zh' is a harder sound than 'ch' -- it's sort of like 'tch'. I think!

That helps some, although I wish it sounded less like a burp. Is the zh sound like chet or chaf in Hebrew? (You can sort of hear them here (http://www.njop.org/jsAlephbet/alephbet.htm), if you're curious.)

probably because I've spent all my time watching SYTYCD, courtesy of queen pimp
OMG SHE GOT YOU. Haven't you learned not to open your eyes when she's around?
even though I packed so light to save room for books that I forgot to pack my underwear
You know, BB and I once traveled to England with my mother, who spent the entire trip shopping because she'd forgotten to pack any trousers (or skirts, or anything else with which to clothe her lower half). And I thought that was pretty much the peak of forgetful packing. But not packing underwear is WORSE. *awards you prize*
no subject
But, dude. I question your prize-giving. Is it worse to forget underwear, the lack of which is invisible to the outside world, or your PANTS?
Unsurprisingly, bookstores in the north of Australia did not stock Liz Williams. I'll order it off Amazon, though, because it sounds just up my alley.
And, hey, I loved SYTYCD from the get-go! MMWD, however, has opened my eyes to the slash potential *g*. She has also faciliated my consumption of so many episodes that now when I hear music, I SEE DANCE. Possibly a sign that I should take a break, watch a bit of Terminator...
no subject
If she'd managed to get all the way to the UK without WEARING pants, my mother would still have the prize. But you can re-wear a pair of pants while you shop for additional pants. Re-wearing underwear is...ickier.
I'll order it off Amazon, though, because it sounds just up my alley.
I would be curious to hear if you liked it!
And, hey, I loved SYTYCD from the get-go! MMWD, however, has opened my eyes to the slash potential *g*.
She is a foul temptress. This is a proven fact.
She has also faciliated my consumption of so many episodes that now when I hear music, I SEE DANCE.
You have acquired a very peculiar form of synesthesia! Can you get compensation for that under your employment plan?

They don't really talk at school.
It's been some years since Amedeo was the new kid in town. He's still invisible to most kids at Lancaster High School, but he no longer feels like a member of Aloners Anonymous. He does what he feels is required of him, and goes home satisfied. If Jake Kaplan ever found out his son went through school like a 35-year-old office worker, he'd have a fit, but Amedeo's happy to save his ninety percent for after school.
Sometimes he catches William's eye as the other boy is passing, on his disinterested way to somewhere else. Once or twice every year someone tries to make William interested, but he grays them out politely. There's no fuss. They're happy to admire his aloofness from a distance...as long as they're sure no one else has succeeded where they failed.
Amedeo understands how they feel. He still feels the exclamation points somewhere inside, whenever he says or thinks William's name.
Ever since the Summer of the Moon Lady he's known what that meant. Well, not exactly; he'd felt the world open up as he listened to the story of Peter's uncle and namesake, and he'd looked across at William and saw the world open up for his friend as well. It was later, on the loading dock in Wisconsin that December, when Amedeo watched William listen to the angel on his shoulder and thought about how William had part of his ninety percent now, and felt hot and cold at the same time. When William gave his jacket back Amedeo had hung it carefully in the closet, and held one fuzz-trimmed cuff for a moment as if it were someone else's hand. Then he felt silly, and shut the door.
It was as if the world had seemed infinite for a few months, and then closed like a fist again. It's not as if anyone would make Amedeo wear the Pink Triangle, but whenever he lets himself think about it, he feels helpless and hunted anyway. So he's tried not to think about it. For three years.
These days he's mostly got the anxiety under control. He's too busy with his part-time job at Wilcox Appraisals (which pays for his subscriptions to Creative Review) and running the website for the Sheboygan Art Center. Today it's a warm spring day, perfect for distracting after-school walks, and he's thinking about the new Russian Avant Garde exhibit opening in July (lovebug season), as he gets on the bus.
Thoughts of Rodchenko and Lissitzky evaporate when William takes a seat behind him.
Neither of them say a word all the way home; the bus is full of kids from school, and it's still half full when they reach Amedeo's stop.
He thinks hard about the website as he shoulders his backpack and steps off the bus. Peter will have a lot to write about, he says to himself. Neo-Primitivism. The End of Painting. Had the bus door taken longer to close than usual? The rise of poster art. Constructivism. He can't hear footsteps behind him, but the soft earth around here absorbs sound. 5 x 5 = 25.
"Why the multiplication table?" asks a voice in a Southern accent. "Could've sworn you were thinking of your Art Center."
Amedeo manages not to jump, and turns around. William ambles up to him, hands in his pockets, smiling his half-smile.
It was easier when he was younger. Puberty makes everything more urgent, somehow. Amedeo sighs. "Sorry, was I mumbling to myself again?"
William shrugs. Amedeo ignores the sudden twinge.
"5 x 5 = 25," he says, collecting his thoughts. "It was an exhibit of Russian abstract art, that claimed to herald the death of traditional painting."
"The summer show," says William, grinning. "So I was right."
Amedeo smiles. "You were right."
The early-May wind blows William's blond hair right into his eyes. His head full of red triangles, black lines, and squares of blue and yellow, Amedeo reaches up without thinking and brushes it back.
"Um," says William, and Amedeo freezes.
"Rosa Winkel," he says, through the lump in his throat. "I have to go."
Before he can even turn and run, William says, "Deo, wait," and grabs his hand. Amedeo just manages to think this cannot possibly be happening as William's other arm goes round his waist, and then he's getting his first kiss, good and proper.
His mother is going to kill him. Half the school is going to kill him. Even mild Mrs. Wilcox might put aside peacemaking and join the general slaughter when she finds out. Amedeo puts his arms around William's neck and opens his mouth, and he gets a tingle right down to his knees when he touches the tip of William's tongue with his own.
When they break apart, flushed and oxygen deprived, William leans his forehead against Amedeo's. "You might could have told me before," he says. "I was all braced for you to fall in love with some girl with a long swanny neck."
Amedeo laughs.
They walk back to his house holding hands, and never mind that anyone might see them.
--
One more:
"You're getting married again?" Amedeo considers throttling the phone, but that would be useless. It might make him feel better, though. "We haven't even met her yet!"
"Your mother knows her," says Jake Kaplan. "She might not approve, though."
"Which is why I would have greatly appreciated meeting this person myself!"
Will is lounging on the bed with a copy of Creative Review. He scribbles something on one of Amedeo's Post-Its and holds it up, grinning. You talk like your Ma when you're mad, it reads. Amedeo throws a pillow from the reading chair at him.
"You're coming up to the Art Center for the summer, aren't you?" his father says. "You can meet her then. Bring William, if you like."
Amedeo blushes. "Do you want to talk to Mother?" he says, changing the subject.
There's a short pause, then his father says, in tones of great dignity:
"I prefer not to."
Someone in the background laughs, low and delighted, and Amedeo begins to feel better about the whole business. He locks eyes with Will, and they're both smiling by the time he puts down the phone.

This is exactly what I was craving when I finished the book, and what I've been craving ever since. I mean, I love that she left it vague, I love that she acknowledged that our first love is not necessarily the one we stay with, I love all those things about the book. But I also love what you've done here, because of course I want them to be together forever, and fan fiction makes it so I can have both.
And, wow. You've captured them as they will be so perfectly. This is just right in every particular, and I love you insanely. <3 <3 <3 <3!
