Yuletide Reveal!

I wrote two stories this year. My assignment was Pursuit, for [livejournal.com profile] khaleesian, a (mildly) Dom/Brian Fast and the Furious story. This was a challenge to write; there was a dark and scary night when I realized I'd reached five thousand words and was not yet halfway through the story. (It ended up being the longest story I've ever finished. Here's an important lesson for you all: don't write your longest story ever for Yuletide.) Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] makesmewannadie and [livejournal.com profile] qe2 for heroic and life-saving beta-reading, and to [livejournal.com profile] best_beloved for moral support and sock bribes.

My pinch hit was Hunting High and Low, for [livejournal.com profile] steelneko, in the extensive and popular Take on Me (music video) fandom. This one is for the children of the '80s! Many thanks to my last-minute beta-reading team, [livejournal.com profile] brown_betty, [livejournal.com profile] dine, [livejournal.com profile] fanofall, [livejournal.com profile] giglet, [livejournal.com profile] makesmewannadie, and [livejournal.com profile] shrift, and, again [livejournal.com profile] best_beloved, for encouraging me to take the pinch hit in the first place. And here's what I learned (yet again) from this story: always take the pinch hit.

I got The Last Temptation of the Waffles, by Fyre, and My Lost Friend, by Yuletide Fairy, both in Scrubs, for my favorite pairing that only four people I know like or even remember: J.D./Nick Murdoch. I've been wanting these stories for a long, long time. The Last Temptation of the Waffles features a great morning after, fabulous character voices, and seduction by waffles, which I now realize should totally be a fannish trope. My Lost Friend has great J.D. internal monologue, which is a wonderful thing, and some lovely reflections on Nick and J.D.'s history with him. These were wonderful gifts to receive, and I especially want to thank Fyre for picking me up as a last-minute pinch hit. (Yes, I was a pinch hit again this year. Third time running! I am half-expecting the mods to ask me to take my crazy elsewhere next year.)

I'm STILL waiting for the rest of Pursuit, btw. *g* That was probably the best fic I read of the Yuletide fics & I don't even really follow that fandom.

I LOVED Pursuit and I am SO excited that you wrote it! (I had minor suspicions, but I am always wrong about those things!)

Sock bribes?

[identity profile] sheldrake.livejournal.com 2009-01-01 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
No way. That was a pinch hit? That story was so genius! And yay, it was yours! :D

(Oh, and on behalf of children of the 80s, I thank you.)

I can't wait to read your FatF fic. I know it's going to be awesome and I'm so ready for some good Dom/Brian. :)

And I hear you about yuletide fics growing like they're on steroids!! I have no idea what happened to mine, but I looked up and it was over 4000 words. Not my longest, but a damn sight longer than last year's.

Happy new Year to you and yours!

Ahaha! (or just A-HA!) So the story I've had open for DAYS meaning to read (failing because I keep getting pulled away from the computer) while at the same time wondering if you were going to rec or comment on (because, really, I'd expect you to comment about Take On Me fanfic) turns out to be yours.

I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN FROM YOUR SILENCE ON IT.

That "Take on Me" story was awesome, as I'm sure everyone has told you by now. But it bears repeating. :)

Why is there always a pipe wrench when he needs one? We've been extensively quoting from your fic at our house!

The Take On Me fic made my recs, I was so bloody impressed by it - should have known it was yours... :)

The Take On Me fic was terribly impressive. It's been a long time since I've been surprised by a story: the idea, the quality, everything.

Here's an important lesson for you all: don't write your longest story ever for Yuletide.

HA! I learned that lesson last year. 20,000 words. And then I didn't sign up this year, so I guess I learned my lesson well.

I loved (& recced) Pursuit (although failed to leave a comment saying so) - it was so much fun to read, and, despite the no smut, the straight-up hottest thing I happened to come across in all yuletide. (TBH, I got so focused on the hotness it distracted me from the plot, & once I got to the end I felt mostly out of breath & a little confused & not quite sure what had happened apart from that a) I'd been taken for a ride, and b) it had been very hot. Which, really, made it a perfect The Fast and the Furious experience.)

Still incoherent with love for you, your story, the planet...because of the story...will write more when eloquence returns and I can do more than flail with glee.

That was A PINCH HIT?!
*worships at your talented feet*

[identity profile] qe2.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
You are very, very, very, very welcome, dear heart. Any time. (And yes, I mean it.)

(Yes, I was a pinch hit again this year.)

I KNOW. And I am on the pinch-hit list - as, obviously, are you - and when your name came across my email desk I sat there in deep distress. And then I kept it in my email inbox for, like, DAYS, repeatedly re-rereading it and hoping something on your awesome list would strike me as possible for me to research and write with the negative brain power I had left at the time. I failed. I'm so extremely glad two other people didn't.

re: Hunting High and Low

How did I miss this?!? Oh, but I am beside myself with glee now that I have finally found it. What a fantastically happy and intriguingly meta story! Yay!
