[Poll] Moar Science!

A number of people have made excellent points about the poll, round one. First, obviously it was wrong wrong wrong of me to combine Torchwood and Doctor Who, and against the nature of SCIENCE. Second, I left out a number of fandoms that clearly needed to be subjected to the keen-eyed scrutiny of SCIENCE. (Thanks to everyone who suggested one, and I tried to grab them all. If I missed one, um, sorry!)

So, behind the cut: yet more science, for your scientific convenience!



Remember, one = low low quality (fanfiction.net would be ashamed to host it!) or low low slashiness (rulers dream of being so straight!). Ten = super high quality (earth-shattering genius, like Shakespeare except BETTER!) or super high slashiness (time spent canonically sucking cock or fingering each other could only reduce the overall slashy quotient!).

And, again, vote based on what you think. Never mind fandom's opinion! I want to look into your heart, your soul, your brain. Or, rather, SCIENCE does.

And thank you. With your help, we will at last be able to plot our loves on a really shiny chart. I think that's a dream we can all embrace.

X-Files was really hard to judge with regard to writing quality! They varied wildly over the run of the series -- sometimes excellent, sometimes abysmal. And the mytharc made no sense, and most of the slashy bits involved Mulder/Krycek. Oh, X-Files.

I am also amused at the wild spread currently in place over original Star Wars slashiness. I suspect that has something to do with how young many were the first time they saw it.

I totally agree about the original Star Wars. I saw it when it first came out & I was 11. Slash wasn't even on my radar. In fact, I cannot look at the originals with slash glasses, I've tried and I just can't.

Ironically it was TPM that got me into slash in the first place. I sat through that first movie thinking, "They are so doing it!" about Obi & Qui.

I am boggled that people think Torchwood is so badly written and Dr Who so well written. I mean, Torchwood has had some stinkers, sure, but hello, Midnight, hello River Song, hello Martha and her total inability to be badass when the Doctor is around. Yeesh.

I'm not sure age has anything to do with it for me with Star Wars - I gleefully slash many other things I first saw/read under 10. For me it's just that I can't, for the life of me, see Han/Luke at all. I can do Han/Lando, I can do Luke/Biggs or Luke/Wedge, hell, I can do Han/Chewbacca. But I can't see Han/Luke, which brings the slash level down quite a bit for me, since they're the primarily m/m interaction (and there really isn't any f/f). ...and droids don't count.

I'm basically the same. I can see Han/Lando, in a drunken post-sabacc way; I can see Luke/Wedge if I squint, but Han/Luke just...baffles me. Sometimes men competing over a woman are just...men competing over a woman.

Hee -- I love the results for Torchwood :-). And I love that you are running these polls! We've been talking about this, in small groups, for years, but it's interesting to see the results based on a wider scale of opinions.

I would have expected it to be totally skewed -- worse writing = slashier, but that's not always turning out to be the case.

But for me, how slashy I see a show is not always equal to how much I want to read stories about that relationship. For example, I see House as extremely slashy & in the first season it was extremely well written. I had no desire to read any extraneous stories about that relationship -- I was satisfied by what I saw in canon.

so to me, there's also a relationship between the quality of the writing canon & how much extra stories I want to read.

I started with the anime, then inhaled the manga multiple times (SO. PRETTY.), I have the artbook, and spent a gazillion Yen buying the prettiest of the trading cards (I have about 200, I think - prettiest manga art ever!). I also own the manga in three languages, have avis subbed in two languages on top of the DVDs, and a case of doujinshi that's almost too heavy to carry. All this to say BEST STORY EVER - and yes, very very happymaking. I was devastated for weeks when the manga was canceled.

More people should watch and/or read it. It has been my mission for years to convert people.

Doctor Who varies widely, and the good is really good. Torchwood is kind of at a constant level of not-really-that-great. (IMHO of course, and with the qualification that I've only seen the first season so far.)

I really liked "Midnight", but that had more to do with the acting than the writing.

Yes. Just yes. I had a terrible cold/cough when I was forced to see Phantom Menace and was high on cough syrup and I *still* remember that scene. The suckage was so bad that even a boat load of Co-dine couldn't ease my pain.

Gotta say though, I think throwing Hikaru no Go in there is kinda gonna majorly screw with results. Really, putting any animanga in there will do that. For one, the writing quality question gets harder to compare, since the majority of people are gonna be working off translations. And then, well, the canon slash levels of anime kinda need their own scale. I mean, there's the copious copious amounts of actual canon slash series, then all the series that don't actually go slash, but the original writers go and do their own fanfic/fan comics that slash their own characters, which begs the question of what's really canon....and um...well...

Sorry to go on, just, as we're being scientific, think it's important to weigh that in when looking at the results.

That's exactly it about X-Files. It went downhill rapidly after seasons 5 (or so) and stayed on the air for so long after it went bad, that the average quality overall after the fact is wildly different than the score for individual early seasons. Also, it weirdly gave off a slash vibe for the central m/f couple, which would be only normal in a sane world but, um, look around. The "partners beyond death in adversity" feel of it, the free-floating *slash* feeling, I think was one factor in spurring the huge Mulder/Krycek fandom. There had to be slash *somewhere*! And Nicholas Lea was prettiest.

When I first moved here we say Troy in the theatres and I was ROFL, not literally, but literally shouting and shrieking with laughter at the badfic. Apparently some Finnish dudes behind me were constantly bitching about it, but I had no idea because a) I don't understand any Finnish and b) I was so wrapped up in the delicious hilarious badfic. wax_jism now briefs me before entering any movie that is expected to be bad: "Remember those guys and how I wanted to die, and DO NOT LAUGH SO HARD YOU ASPHYXIATE!" Especially before Twilight, but fortunately, the whole theatre was laughing on that one.

I'm pretty sure that TPM fandom covers the whole prequel trilogy (maybe a clarification/further poll is in order) and probably a fair number of those votes are due to Anakin/Obi-Wan slashers. I know that fandom was pretty healthy for a while, so you can hardly be the only one.

I'm not sure -- the original trilogy question specifies 4-6, while the other question is specifically about TPM. When I was writing and reading Obi-Wan/Anakin, I didn't consider myself writing in 'Phantom Menace' fandom, but, as you say, the prequel trilogy.

If it is meant to cover all three prequel movies, then I need to recast my vote!

While I utterly agree about River Song, I had no idea there were people who didn't like "Midnight" or thought it was poorly written! It's my second favorite episode of the entire new series. It really shows how subjective opinions of good writing can be.
