[Poll] Check One

Internets! I am still compiling the Woobie Poll of Dooooooooom, but in the meantime, here is a PRESSING QUESTION that came up today while I was (yay!) visiting with [personal profile] norah. Plus some other pressing questions, because why have one forced choice when you can have five?

So. For the rest of your life, you can only have one of each of the following pairs. Which will it be? Which is the ONLY ONE YOU CAN HAVE FOREVER? (If you already live without one or more of these, then obviously your choice is easier. Like, I will have no trouble at all with question three, but question one might kill me.)

I am also taking suggestions for future horrible forced choices. I would like to find the hardest forced choice in all the land. (That isn't, you know, of great weight or import. No Sophie's Choices.)

Poll #2389 Choose Wisely

Those were hard? They were simple, for me. Garlic, fat, coffee, caffiene, and sex. Done.

Given, I'm not a sugar junkie, I'm all about COFFEE, nice and dark and strong (but not sweet), I'd prefer caramel to chocolate, I don't drink alcohol (never picked up the habit), and sex sex sex (*ahem*).

Hmmmm. I'm going to go read everyone else's responses now, to see what I'm missing.

*grin*

Does reading porn count as sex? Because I can totally do celibacy (look, I'm doing it right now!) but I can't go a week without sweets. Also, my period would become a new kind of hell if I couldn't have chocolate.

Garlic makes me incredibly sick, so that one was easy. But sweets or sex... If I could keep them both, I'd give up salt.

This poll reminds me of Zobmondo, a book I found several years ago. A room full of people + a lot of alcohol + this book = hilarity.

Also, thanks to "choose wisely" I kept hearing the knight from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in my head: "He choose...poorly."

I almost ran away from this entire poll just because that last question was so demonically hard!

I gave up chocolate in 1996 and haven't eaten it since; the first couple of months were hard, but after that I didn't miss it at all. Coffee, now... I tried to give that up once, a few years ago, and lasted less than 12 hours. Coffee is my OTV (One True Vice).

Sugar over fat was hard, but then I decided I had to have sugar because fruit! But then after clicking submit I remembered meat. I guess meat with literally no fat would still be tasty though?

(If the question had been fat vs sucrose I'd have gone for fat.)

Does "caffeine" include black tea? (for me it does, but i've seen different views on this)

Honestly, the only really hard one was fat v. sugar. I don't drink coffee or much caffeine (though I do love Coca-Cola Classic, the caffeine-free version is just as tasty), not that I drink much alcohol either. And while I have a massive sweet tooth, no one on this earth would benefit from me giving up sex, esp. if it included with myself.

I have a choice for you:
sex (including with yourself) v. all other touch (Or worded differently: orgasms v. cuddling)

also, sex with yourself v. sex with other people

(Clearly I spend a lot of time thinking about sex. Also cuddling)

If you hadn't specified that sex meant masturbation, too, I would totally have chosen sweets. I don't really like sex with other people anyway. XD

I don't care about either caffeine or alcohol. I rarely drink alcohol and have mostly cut out caffeinated sodas (never drink tea or coffee) because I'm trying to drink less soda. So my body doesn't need the daily caffeine to work.

The onions vs garlic made me pause for a second until I remembered the versatility of the humble shallot.

For the rest fat, chocolate, caffine and sex were hands down winners with nary a thought give to the other options! *G*

Once upon a time my answer to the last one would have been different. Stupid hormones. :(

Onions versus garlic was the second hardest choice for me, because on the one hand garlic but on the other hand, I use onions in probably 95% of lunch and dinner meals and there are substitutes but not really any as cheap or varied or convenient. So onions it had to be.

They were all easy except for the last. Unfortunately, the answer to that one is likely to change from day to day, hour to hour. In the end I picked sweets. My plan to deal with this is simply to take antidepressants, which will simultaneously kill any lingering interest in sex, while mopping up any lingering trauma. I am a genius.

Or not.

[personal profile] hivesofactivity 2010-03-07 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I found them all very easy choices. The fat -v- sugar one was the easiest, because life isn't possible without butter. The only hard forced choice I can think of at the moment is: soap or toilet paper? (I think "books or internet?" would cause the apocalypse, so I shan't suggest it.)

A few years ago I'd have picked chocolate over coffee like a shot. Some of my friends and even my sisters have said they got over wanting chocolate around menopause. I didn't believe them, but, um... I now don't each much chocolate unless I'm cooking for someone else, and I still love coffee.

I do wonder if this might have sorted out differently if there had been no Starbucks capuccino revolution, slightly before the time my friends and sisters, and then me, were going through menopause.

Some of these are quite easy — I don't really drink alcohol, and when I do I get terribly sick (in various ways, actually), so choosing caffeine is a no brainer. I had to think harder about fat or sugar, but I'd rather have butter than sweets. I think. Giving up coffee for chocolate would actually be a good one to implement in my diet already, since coffee makes my anxiety worse, and I tend to drink hot chocolate anyway when I know what's good for me.

And I'd rather have sex than, well, any of these.

This was fun!

This is a bleak and pitiless world you're presenting us with. I very nearly wept.

Though, mind you, I've been up since 6 am yesterday morning trying to finish writing an index for a cultural studies book, so right now the thought of the word "ideology," for example, makes me want to weep. Still, without caffeine I'd be dead, currently, and without alcohol how would I celebrate having finally finished? ...Oh, right, sleep. Still!

At first I picked onions over garlic, even though onions stick around in my body for days and days and days, because I use onions more than garlic. But, if chives are not onions, let's go with garlic.

My sex drive is naturally pretty low, so basically the only way I would pick sex over sweets would be if this were guaranteed to get me sex with a specific person I don't have sex with. If sex with him were on offer but I couldn't have it, I might die. Otherwise, I can do without.

Lah, this was frighteningly easy, except for the last one, but even there, since I'd already chosen fat over sugar, it seemed obvious to give up the sweets. Sweets made with sugar substitutes suck anyway. Plus, once you give up sweets, you feel better and look better and enjoy more sex!(That's what I'd be telling myself anyway.)

I couldn't eat garlic while I was pregnant for some reason. Now I love it again, but I went 10 months without and was fine, so I know I can do it. Onions, I'm convinced I would actually DIE.
