Earthling Update!

The earthling is 16, unbelievably enough. And the earthling is also she/her! This has been true for a while, but she's now comfortable letting all her internet aunties and uncles and nuncles and auncles know. So please update your pronoun database! And if you know her deadname, please text or email or DM me on Bluesky for her real name; she'd rather you think of her only by that from now on.

This is a post where you can leave congratulations for her if you want to! (Also suggestions on high femme looks. Neither of the earthling's parents are femme enough for her, sad to say.)

I mean. Zaphod will be fifteen at the end of November, and is in high school. So I suppose it makes sense that the Earthling is 16? Except that somewhere in my head, she's still a toddler who will only accept organic strawberries. (Even though I know she became b-mitzvah. Look, brains are weird. Time is weird. Nothing makes sense.)

Suggestions for high femme are to buy cheap makeup at the drug store, and play. Watch youtube tutorials. Then buy the fancy stuff once you have a better idea what you like. Here's a fascinating video about how color theory overlaps with makeup - https://youtu.be/TwO8yzSs1lk

Also, get a long swishy (bias cut) skirt in bamboo jersey knit. Wear it when your legs are freshly shaven.

If your nails break more than you want them to, moisturize your hands very day and take a moment to rub the lotion into your cuticles.

If you don't make your femme goals one day, there's always another day.

Congrats to Earthling! When I was her age I loved browsing second hand clothes shops which are full of useful things for a femme look, like earrings, bead necklaces and pretty scarves. Also loads of dresses, tops, skirts etc. It feels like treasure hunting, and it’s great fun to do with a friend. Then you can bring stuff home and ruin your parents’ washing machine dyeing it!

(a dress is simple and a dress over tights is a classic and tucking the back of your dress into your tights is a classic mistake and kind strangers will point it out to help. But you can remember to check every time you pull your tights up again. Anyway. It's about 20 years since dresses over jeans so that's probably going to happen again? Fashion is cyclical like that)

Congrats to Earthling, and how terrifying that she is 16 now! I did some very deliberate experimentation with femme looks in my early 20s before deciding it was not for me; I expect she already knows all about online makeup tutorial videos, but I found those extremely helpful in experimenting with different looks that I might like and figuring out what the different effects of different makeup products were. (If it’s of interest, I could probably recommend some specific channels, but I think that’s a world that has really exploded in the intervening time so she probably already knows many others!)
