Poll: Fandoms I Have Loved: Reader Input

I'm just curious, really. I have a lot of half-finished FIHL posts sitting on my hard drive - all the ones listed below are somewhere between 1% and 80% complete - and I guess, now that I've finished with Smallville, I'm feeling a little...unfocused.

Pointers, anyone?

ETA: I have already done (in reverse order) Smallville, Stargate: Atlantis, The Fast and the Furious, Oz, Ocean's 11, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Master & Commander, due South, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Sentinel, and Lord of the Rings. Those can all be found at my Fandoms I Have Loved tag.

ETA2: Allow me to smack my forehead in a painful fashion, because I completely forgot to put on the poll two others that I have in progress: Harry Potter and the DCU. Memo to me: no more posting polls late at night.

I'm expressing interest, mainly because I don't think it's going to win this round, but there should be some record that it is highly desireable: I bid for Hercules, because... well, okay, mainly because I would love to see just what kind of synopsis you'd produce for that canon, a.k.a just how does one explain the Widow Twanky? Or Ares the God of Blue Suede Shoes, for that matter.

Also, because it was right up there with Smallville with the Gay. (Your whole family is murdered? Pout a lot and knock over a few rocks. Your homosocial life partner is killed (again)? Take out entire pantheons! That's the way to assert your hetersexual identity, right there. Go, you long-haired wonderstud in leather pants!)

And the show crossed my mind for no apparent reason today, which seems very kismet. So, yeah. Hercules someday, please. *g*

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! Yes! Everything she just said, with knobs on. Also, your FIHL for Smallville was absolutely fabulous (I love the conversations between you and your BB. Seriously) and it would just make me all kinds of happy to read your FIHL about Hercules.

(More tips for Herc: after your 'partner' is killed and you take out entire pantheons, hey, why not go grab yourself a body double from an alternate universe? Make sure he's out of the way when you get your own fella back, though. Maybe you could get him to turn into a mermaid...)

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
You don't get a vote, darn it. I'm still bitter about how I acquired a new fandom pretty much through icons of a pig in a leather costume. I mean, seriously - that is not a story that's gonna make me Fan of the Month down at the Intensive Fan Addiction Clinic.

Although, yeah, Hercules is totally worth doing. You would not believe the chats BB and I have had over that show lately. (Example:

BB, eyeing the newly-arrived Seasons 2 and 3 DVD sets: "You know, if I didn't read your LJ, I wouldn't even have known these were coming. First rule of marriage: you're supposed to give your spouse warning before you do something really drastic."

Me, launching into the first of a full dozen prepared excuses: "It wasn't my fault! It was Mary Crawford! You know, the one with the pig icons! I was...under a spell, and also there was this demon, and some leather pants, and..."

BB: "YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TURN YOUR LIFE INTO A HERCULES EPISODE."

[There is a thoughtful pause.]

BB, consideringly: "Although if you're going to anyway, I guess I'd better, you know, check out the discs. That way we can, um, pick the best one."

Me, supportively: "Excellent idea!"

BB: "Also, I get to be Iolaus.")

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
*DIES*

See, I think I deserve a vote for that. HEE. Or possibly I could go post in my LJ and incite people to come over here? Ya think? *plots*

I just sort of really want a running HtLJ commentary by you and your BB. I think that would make me entirely happy. (Okay, and yes, recs would be wonderful and I'd love it if you did some. It's just that the BB dialogues are cracking me up. He gets to be Iolaus! AW.)

I was...under a spell, and also there was this demon, and some leather pants, and..."

Hey, did you know Hercules actually turns into a demon in season six? With horns and everything!

*runs*

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
He gets to be Iolaus!

Or um. she. *is a dolt*

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
You are not an idiot. English is, for not giving us a neutral pronoun. But, seriously, BB is very used to being he and she on LJ, because I forget to say "she" often enough.

*curses English's tiresomely gender specific ways*

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I just sort of really want a running HtLJ commentary by you and your BB.

*snerk* Um. No. That would be - that would be disturbing. Yes.

And I have no intention of revealing in a public place just how hysterical I thought it was that the Amazons had to hold their breasts as they ran down the hill.

Oh. Wait. Whoops.

Hey, did you know Hercules actually turns into a demon in season six? With horns and everything!

Oh my god. Now we're running into - see, okay. There's this old movie called Legend, and it is - it is the funniest thing I have ever seen, for so very, very many reasons. (The sprite played by a tiny lightbulb on a very visible string! The unicorns with horns that wobble around on their heads when they gallop! The way that hell only has one person in it! Well, two if you count Satan.) I know a lot of people love it for reasons of actual plot, but I love it because - well, because Satan has horns on which the seam from the mold is clearly visible.

Now I'm picturing Hercules wearing similar horns. And I'm realizing that BB's Theory of Hercules ("It's really about hats. And other assorted headwear.") is entirely correct.

My brain is a place of legend right now. (And the legend is "Hercules and the Minotaur Costume of Doom.")

I'm still bitter about how I acquired a new fandom pretty much through icons of a pig in a leather costume.

*giggles madly*

At least she did it to me through whole vids. Hee hee hee hee. Okay, it was actually through a few snapshots of Iolaus flirting, but. *kof*

Although porkules was v. v. enticing.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, it was actually through a few snapshots of Iolaus flirting, but.

You still totally trump me on the fan coolness scale. Icons! I was seduced into a fandom by pig icons! My shame is intense.

[livejournal.com profile] marycrawford should be required to wear some kind of warning wherever she goes. (Ideally something more concise than, "If you spend more than two minutes talking to me, you're going to have a profoundly humiliating story to tell all your fannish friends.")

But, I mean - Porkules! What could I do but succumb?

Demons and leather pants describes so many fandoms.

I'm very disturbed by the accuracy of this statement. I just want you to know that.

But! You have made a scientific discovery of no little merit: apparently demons + leather pants is one of the terms in the Grand Unified Fandom equation. You should publish this.

Further Herc tips (I feel like we should start a column somewhere; Dear Abbey for the Demigod, maybe):

Should the double thing not work out and death continue to be a pain, you can set your universe on repeat. All your loved ones will reincarnate, and you can keep doing the adventure and suffering schtick throughout eternity. The downside is that your not-so-loved ones will also resurface, but then, you'd get fat and lazy without the cardiovascular hijinks of your daily Ares battle.

And it isn't the slightest bit gay to be linked for all time to your 'partner'. Nope. Not at all. Just like returning from godhood because you missed him isn't. At all.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, I never said I'd go with the majority vote. I just wanted to know what it would be. So Hercules is definitely still a contender, if for no other reason than to show those who have not beheld the majesty of the long-haired wonderstud in leather pants what they're missing. (And, seriously. That is the perfect description of Hercules.)

Although I don't know. I feel kind of...inadequate in the face of a fandom that so obviously did not take itself even remotely seriously. And was so obviously very, very gay. And, my god, the Widow Twanky. It's like - they Fandoms I Have Loved themselves, you know?
ext_1740: (Default)

[identity profile] stillane.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
The wonderstud needs to be beheld. *serious nod* The behind of the wonderstud needs to be beheld.

I'm pretty sure there was some very heavy consumption of intoxicating substances behind more than one of those episodes. Really, giant formerly-bondage-geared-goddess chickens? A host of recuring characters which included a character named after deepfried chickpeas and Surfer Barbie the Diety? More than one episode involving your main character being translated into a farmyard animal?

Come to think of it, I wonder what the Herc writers are up to these days... I suspect they may have taken up writing SGA fanfic...

Good to know the crack is still in the running. *g*

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The behind of the wonderstud needs to be beheld.

And the behind of the wonderstud needs to be held. By Iolaus.

*nods in heartfelt agreement*

I wonder what the Herc writers are up to these days... I suspect they may have taken up writing SGA fanfic.

*shock and awe*

My god. That would explain so much. Hercules: where the canon is just like SGA fandom.

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
As it happens, I just found out that Kurtzman & Orci, the writing team that brought you Porkules (and some fun, slightly less insane episodes, too) have been hired to write the Star Trek prequel movie, with a younger Kirk and Spock at the Academy.

Mary, admiring the behind of the wonderstud

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Are you kidding? You're kidding, right? I mean, about the Star Trek movie? Because...wow. Wow. It'd be like Young Hercules, except - Young Kirk. OMG.

(I just looked them up on the IMDb and learned that they also wrote Mission: Impossible III.

I am very very tempted to see MI III now.)

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Would I kid about something so important (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117941815?categoryid=10&cs=1&s=h&p=0)?

"Project, to be penned by Abrams and "MI3" scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, will center on the early days of seminal "Trek" characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer space mission."

Aw. K/S, my first fandom! And I particularly like their use of 'seminal'. *is twelve*

Oohh...Harry Potter! Harry Potter! Because I would love your spin on the canon.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I salute you for your excellent taste in small fandoms. And, seriously, I would've put DiR on the list (I do have a stub of a FIHL for it, started back when dinosaurs frolicked on the earth), but I didn't want to see no one vote for it but me. (And [livejournal.com profile] makesmewannadie; I made her read the books last year.) I love those books. They made my childhood a happy place, and I still re-read The Dark Is Rising every December.

And GO and Discworld - these are excellent suggestions. (Although I would feel weird about writing a FIHL that's significantly less funny than the actual canon.)

My Harry Potter FIHL, on the other hand, has been in progress forever. And it's, like, 12 pages of insane confusion already, and it's only half done. And that doesn't even include HPB.

Come to think of it, that would be a highly appropriate introduction to the fandom, really.

*moves HP back into the active folder*

[identity profile] minervacat.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
i would totally have voted for dark is rising (and i would have logged out and logged back in with the two journals i DON'T EVEN USE to vote for it, too) if it had been an option. i'm just sayin'.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I love you more than words can express.

And I am ashamed; I should have had more faith in my fellow fans. Of course there'd be DiR love out there! You people have taste!

[identity profile] sinsense.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
What [livejournal.com profile] minervacat said, complete with admission that I would vote with my unused journal. The Dark is Rising and Little Men (everyone stop laughing at meeee!) are my two favorite ignored fandoms.

I would like to vote for HP as well.

And it's probably (un)important to note that I made a tiny little noise of happiness and glee when I saw Scrubs on that list.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I admit I can't agree with you on the Little Men thing, mostly because I never read it. (By the time I was halfway through Little Women, I just...I couldn't face the concept of a sequel. I couldn't even face the rest of the book. Yes, it's true: I preferred Eight Cousins to Little Women. My shame is great.)

But I so totally hear you on DiR and Scrubs. These are canons that everyone should love. And write lots of fan fiction for.

*waits hopefully for the Fandom Gods to make it so*

[identity profile] sinsense.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Little Men is a little preachy, when I read it now, but I loved it as a little kid. There are these friends, Dan and Nat, and Dan is big and burly, and Nat is slim and delicate, and Dan takes care of Nat and stoically takes the blame for him when Nat is unjustly accused of stealing money, and --

Er, I'll shut up. But even if you didn't like Little Women, you might like Little Men. (I didn't like Little Women at all.)

Those damn Fandom Gods don't keep a very good timetable. I've been waiting for both fandoms for a while now.

*watches as DIR fans come out of the woodworks* I rest my case (whatever case that is)! *g*

I actually only read Dark Is Rising recently. I think it's because I wanted to read one of the crossover fanfics you recommended, but had want to know the source texts first and since I was looking for something to read, well...you know the rest. I really love Will & Bran.

And heh! *waits patiently for you HP FIHL*

[identity profile] ficbyzee.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I want you to do DCU because it would comfort me to know that someone else suffered through the same insanity I did... for the love of sunshine and puppies?

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Um. What does the DCU have to do with sunshine and puppies?

Insanity, though - that's totally connected to the DCU. That FIHL has been in progress forever, because I kept weeping and chewing my hands when I got to the part where I tried to explain the plot.

*shudders at the memory*

*embraces you in profound sympathy*

[personal profile] brownbetty 2006-05-03 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
I think when you realize that the writers themselves regard the past as a sort of strong suggestion, rather than, you know, immutable events, that you finally say, "screw it!" and write the story of that time Tim Drake worked as a stewardess for a summer, (in a short skirt pursuit pursuit of justice,) and his smoldering affair with billionaire Bruce Wayne, member of the Mile High club.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
So your argument is that:

1. It is indeed true that the DCU and insanity are closely linked, and
2. This is not necessarily a bad thing.

And if the insanity truly leads to Stewardess!Tim, I would be forced to agree with you. Nothing that causes people to write Stewardess!Tim could be bad.

the writers themselves regard the past as a sort of strong suggestion, rather than, you know, immutable events

I'm trying to figure out whether I should laugh or cry at this statement. Because: oh my god so true.

[identity profile] suchthefangirl.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
You have the two shows that I would have thought of first: Sports Night and Hercules!! So much love do I have for these shows, so much so, that I own the complete runs of both, so you know I would love to see your take on them. And I know you love Sports Night 'cause that's how I found you.

The only two others that I would suggest, but thought of after I filled out the poll are both old (like I am), but are filled with slashy goodness: Man From UNCLE, which I haven't seen in decades but I remember it fondly and the fic is really good, and Starsky and Hutch, which I am currently rewatching and am shocked at what they got away with back then. Those boys are in love with each other just as surely as Herc and Iolaus are.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, Sports Night. One of my all-time fandom loves. It's one of those FIHL that I've hesitated about writing forever, just because - how could I do it justice?

I must admit that I've never seen either Man From UNCLE or Starsky and Hutch. But I've seen vids (and the blooper reel!) for the latter, and - oh. My. God. They were so seriously doing it, and the actors so obviously knew it. (Thus, I have added them to the list of Fandoms Where Even the Actors Knew Their Characters Were Gay, Gay, Gay, As Judged by the Blooper Reel: The Sentinel, due South, Starsky and Hutch.)

I watched the S&H movie (okay, half of it - I have an attention span problem when it comes to visual entertainment) with Best Beloved. And there were all these scenes of total and absolute gayness, and I was going, "Um, yeah, way to crank the gay up to 11, guys." And BB said thoughtfully, "No, no. The show was pretty much like this, too."

Possibly I will get S&H discs from Netflix. BB is sure to want to watch them, right?

Right?

[identity profile] suchthefangirl.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Netflix is how I'm watching them. Go for it, you won't be disappointed. Hell, they get almost naked in the pilot and the looks they give each other- oy, don't get me started. They share food, chairs, women... and they will risk their lives anytime their partner is threatened.

As for the movie, I ran screaming from the trailer soo...

Tell BB that if she wants company, I'll watch them with her (seriously, beats sitting all alone in my room) (ok, well not really seriously because you don't know me, but, honestly I would, and I think we actually do live not too far from each other). I'd gladly watch Herc again as well.

(and DiR so rocks) (and Good Omens)

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Netflix is a force for evil. I'm growing ever more certain of this. It makes it so easy to say, "Well, maybe I'll just try one or two. I mean, why not? What could be the harm?" And, tragically, you don't realize until much too late that the potential for harm is immense. At least, I don't figure it out until I'm even more behind on my sleep, and Best Beloved is openly mocking me over dinner.

*sighs sadly*

And we truly don't live all that far from each other; you live in Thousand Oaks, right? And I live near Torrance. We are both citizens of the conglomeration of dinky suburbs that, united, became a teeming metropolis! With freeways that resemble mall parking lots at Christmastime!

*swells with civic pride*

[identity profile] suchthefangirl.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Sleep? We're supposed to sleep?

We definitely are neighbors, just under an hour according to Mapquest. You should come to Game Night some Friday :)

Love your icon.

[identity profile] lunardreamed.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I would love to see your take on Highlander. That's the fandom that introduced me to so much: fanfiction, slash, anything x-rated. You don't see that one around so much. The archives are doing alright, but it seems to have been completely missed by the blog craze. Of course, I could be associating with the wrong people. Still, I would love to see your take.

I would also like to see X-Men, just because it was the one on the list that didn't belong. And I am such a geek; I still read them.

But I probably wouldn't mind any of the others.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, no, Highlander has an active LJ presence! Seriously. Just mosey on over to [livejournal.com profile] killabeez's place and start clicking on her friends list. (She's in a lot of other fandoms, too, but that's where I found all my HL sources.)

But, see, my FIHL would be so intensely Methos-focused that I think I'd be, um. Pilloried by all true HL fans. (It's not my fault, really it isn't. He's just...very compelling.)

[identity profile] chalcopyrite.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
my FIHL would be so intensely Methos-focused

::blinks:: There were other characters to focus on? What?

[identity profile] janet-carter.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
True HL fandom isn't Methos-focused? That would make me sad. Not that I've been in of HL fandom; it's more the show that my family used to watch and mock when I was in high school, because we would turn on the tv on Saturday night, and there someone would be, having his/her head taken. And Methos was the hottest thing ever. And then I caught a random rerun a couple of years ago and was like, wow, this is gay. And googled myself to a Methos/Krycek crossover.

Anyway, I had a point...oh, yes, it was pretty much "yay Methos"!

[identity profile] m-butterfly.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 07:29 am (UTC)(link)

It was when I still played....

[identity profile] lunardreamed.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I will. I did kind of figure that I was just hanging with the wrong people.

But, see, my FIHL would be so intensely Methos-focused that I think I'd be, um. Pilloried by all true HL fans.

Oh, but he's my favorite too. He is compelling. (To me) much more interesting than DM, who's so young and black and white. Methos is just so incredibly layered you can do almost anything with him. He's so much fun.

Actually, that's part of the fun of the HL fandom. There were so many fascinating characters introduced that, even though they didn't get as much attention on screen, they left so much fodder for fanfiction. There are so many stories DM doesn't even appear in. I don't know what "true fans" you're talking about, because I knew plenty that focused on the others. (Contrary to what the finale would have us believe, the Immortal world did not revolve around DM.)

. . . and before I get pilloried (cause it's one thing to focus on one character; it's a completely different thing to come across like I didn't like DM) It wasn't that I didn't like DM. It's because HL was all about DM that I felt by the time the series was done, there wasn't much left to do with him. Canon had pretty much spelled out his whole life, and his character kind of dictated what was to come. But there was endless fun left to have with the others. *rubs hands with evil glee*

[identity profile] nessreader.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 02:27 am (UTC)(link)

I just read through FIHL tags - and thank you so much for the Smallville comments. So true about the horror on the TV, and so entertainingly put. There are ridiculous amounts of good stories in that fandom, but none of them are from the canon.

Would love to see you do Sports Night, which have never seen, but people-I-worshipped wrote in it, and lo, there you have it. SN's unavail on DVD or VHS in the UK (curses). It is bizarre to be reading fanfics when you haven't done canon. How on earth do you recc things when you haven't seen the show?

Seconding, possibly thirding, the Dark is Rising enthusiasm. Perhaps it has more lowkey fans than are apparent.

Also tempted to suggest Blakes 7 for the camp factor. Shiny blue eyeshadow, in an Abba's-in-the-charts-+-not-being-ironic way; a space commander who wore evening gowns on the bridge of her ship, sarcastic computer hacker in leather and studs, visibly squeezed budget because the BBC loathes sf.. give it a go, go on..

Anyway, I should comment more often. Your posts are a joy.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
SN's unavail on DVD or VHS in the UK (curses).

This is a very unfair situation, and you should clearly protest. Possibly with violence. (I'm not sure who the violence should be directed toward, though. The gods of DVD distribution, perhaps?)

How on earth do you recc things when you haven't seen the show?

Well, most of the time I haven't seen the show, because - um. Typically I get a better understanding of the canon by reverse engineering it from the fan fiction than I get if I do watch the show. I know for lots of people it doesn't work that way, but - well, TV and I have never been friends, and I just do better with the written word, so for me fan fiction renders all these shows I would never have understood magically accessible.

In short: parallax and triangulation. These are the weapons we use to back engineer the canon from the FF. And powerful weapons they are, too.

Perhaps it has more lowkey fans than are apparent.

I am coming to this conclusion myself. And, really, I could not be happier.

Your posts are a joy.

*beams*

Thank you! And, yes, with flattery like that, you should *totally* comment more often.

You may be onto something. I prefer sv fanon to the show (but who wouldn't?) And sadly, the gender politics of K/S are (actually, here they're competing against the gender politics of Capt Kirk, so not really a fair fight either)

I make pleading baby-puppy faces for DCU, because I have tried to explain it and totally failed; therefore I appreciate the head-exploding tendencies of trying to explain . . . anything, really. (I think I got as far as, "The second Robin . . ." and my audience said, "Wait, what?")

And Dark is Rising, because as much as the ending makes me whimper and demand, "Fixie!" The Dark is Rising is on my list of best-formative-books.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods*

I have incredible sympathy with your explaining-the-DCU dilemma. Comic book canons are like nothing else on earth, truly. ([livejournal.com profile] brown_betty said that the canon DCU writers regard the past merely as a strong suggestion, and I truly did not know whether to weep or laugh or embrace her for putting her finger so unerringly on the problem. I mean, how do you summarize a canon when no part of it ever remains the same?)

I may have just accidentally talked myself into voting for everything. But I always say Sports Night first, as my default answer to everything, because it's the vaguely gay fandom of my heart. And Scrubs, because it might get more people into the fandom. And then I kept thinking of reasons for the others.

I think I need more coffee for coherence.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, first. Before I say anything else, I have to note that I love your name - I meant to tell you before, but, you know. Best intentions blah blah. Sneakers is a marvelous movie.

Come to think of it, there should be Sneakers FF. Lots and lots of it.

*sulks*

the vaguely gay fandom of my heart

Yes! This is precisely the right description of SN.

*feels all warm inside just thinking about Danny and Casey*

[identity profile] janet-carter.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! Sneakers is such a good movie. And, wow, I hadn't thought about it before, but it leaves so many possibilities open for pre- and post-movie stories. *joins sulking*

I vote DCU, per your eta. :D

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
*eyes you*

You know, I'm starting to suspect that all you DCU people just want to see me twitch. You do know that the fandom is entirely summaryproof, right?

[identity profile] flyingtapes.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
it was your FIHL posts for both Oz and for Master and Commander that shoehorned me into being fans of both.

Your Stargate: Atlantis FIHL was the final straw. I had to go out and buy the dvd and am now eagerly wiating for November. I will, however, ask that if you are doing Hercules, do so quickly, while seasons one through three are still in the stores, yes?

Because we have now determined that I will follow wherever you lead.

Even into the arms fo the Widow Twanky (yes, I downloaded the vid. Yes, I've shown it to Himself, dear friends, my mother ...)

Because we have now determined that I will follow wherever you lead.

You don't want to give me such power. It goes to my head, really it does.

*begins scheming*

(Side note: for some reason, your comment caused two fandoms to fuse in my mind, and suddenly - okay, you know the scene in Hercules (it's in the Widow Twanky vid) where the Amazons are chasing him down the hill? I suddenly pictured that happening to Sheppard and McKay. My head is a fun place to be at times, I tell you.)

too late. We saw Hercules Season one on sale and ... oh dear god, it's really that bad, isn't it?

The scenery is gorgeous and the stunt coordinator should have been and possibly was paid more than the scriptwriter.

Spectacularly funny.

[identity profile] lolaraincoat.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
I feel a little weird bossing you around by poll, because really: you should do whatever you want; anything you write will make so many people so happy to read.

But still, I'd be curious about Dark Is Rising.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 02:16 am (UTC)(link)

*blushes*

*allows praise to go to her head*

*begins plotting to conquer all of fandom*

But still, I'd be curious about Dark Is Rising.

Have you read the Dark Is Rising books? Because if you haven't, you so totally should.

*pimps*

[identity profile] lolaraincoat.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
I read them! But I think I was ten or so, and that was a long, long time ago, so I would need to re-read.

[identity profile] wildgreentide.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
I voted for Sports Night (because it is and always will be my comfort fandom) and Angel (because I loved the show, but strangely missed out on a lot of the fic), but I'll happily add my vote for Dark is Rising too!

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
This poll has given me such amazing love for fandom. My people! I have found my people!

The only RL people I know who love DiR are Best Beloved and my sister. (Well, plus [livejournal.com profile] makesmewannadie, who I met through fandom but now know in RL.) But here - wow.

*tears of joy*

[identity profile] nev-longbottom.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
His Dark Materials???

It's a kiddie fandom, but, ever since Daemonology, I realized, the fandom should be much much bigger.
brownbetty: (Pretty please)

[personal profile] brownbetty 2006-05-03 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
Is there other HDM fic? Because I would be on-board for that.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well, since I read Dæmonology, I've been trying to fuse HDM with every fandom under the sun. Mostly for the pleasure of assigning dæmons to all my favorite characters. So I'd give quite a bit just for more HDM fusion.

And I totally second [livejournal.com profile] brown_betty - is there a fandom for HDM? I mean, with FF that is good? 'Cause if so, OMG please please please give me links.

[identity profile] amorettea.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
Hercules! Because you've got the real myths and then you've got extremely attractive men in leather trousers and good-looking babes showing off stuff for the man in your life and another extremely attractive man in leather trousers and goofiness and seriousness and, wow! another hot guy in leather trousers. I mean...HOT guy in leather trousers!!!!!! And nice, non-Greek scenery. And bare-chested hot guys in leather trousers and sometimes. . .hot guys in next to nothing, like little itty bitty blue thongs or just a bunch of grapes. . .

Yup. Herc and Iolaus. Only a little bit gay but a whole lot HOT!

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
*admires your icon*

But is it actually possible to make Hercules' pants gayer? I thought this was basically the fandom that others pointed to when they needed to define gay pants.

[identity profile] amorettea.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
To me, the first pair of gay pants on tv were those belonging to JIm West of Wild, Wild West. So tight they split when he sat down. He wore little short coats to show off those pants. Ah. . .Jim West's gay pants. . .nostalgia. . .

[identity profile] mickeymvt.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
(Wandered over thanks to marycrawford's pimpage)

Another vote here for Hercules. Why- because the canon of the show is so cracked out. Period, end of sentance. Oh, and cause of the 'holy crap there should be a law against this much HOTNESS in one show' statement.

On another note, loved your take on Due South. Another show that is cracked out with the really really really HOT.

Now why do I want to see a story with Iolaus and RayK meeting up and discussing their totally wacked out partners that they can't help but love... *hmmm*

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-04 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
*waves at you*

*shows off own dS icon*

Thank you, both for voting and loving my dS summary. DS is one of my main comfort fandoms. Love! Mountie! Love! Cop!

*dreamy sigh*

(And you are quite right about the story - I think Ray and Iolaus could bond about being the scrappy blond sidekick.

"The worst part," Ray said, slouching even lower over his beer, "is that he thinks he's immortal."

"The worst part of mine," Iolaus said, "is that he probably is."

Ray patted Iolaus' shoulder in sympathy. "Okay. You win that one." He waved at the bartender and ordered another round.

And it would be fantastic to see Hercules and Fraser forced to make conversation. I'd pay to see that.)

[identity profile] mickeymvt.livejournal.com 2006-05-05 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, DS is wonderful. And there are so many great authors, it's hard to pick your fav!

I'm loving the F/V/K movement that is going on there now... very very HOT!

BWAHAHA! I love that little snippet. I can hear that convo.

You're right about Herc and Fraser- that would be amusing. :)

I may have to try that...

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm voting for Scrubs, but I also want to make a short argument for it. Everyone knows how small the fandom is. It's a difficult one to get into due to the now, what, four years of backstory? So, it's gonna take a good, solid, round-up to pull people in.

May I note that you have +1000 people watching your updates, so you could do the fandom a lot of help?

/pleading

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-05 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Well, in all probability I'll do all of these, and I definitely plan to do Scrubs. I've been watching the canon (pathetically, I've been driven to watching the canon because of lack of FF), and I love it.

It just might not be the next time - not so much for voting reasons, as it'll take me a while to work through the entire canon and then digest it enough to summarize it. (Uh. Do not take the metaphor I accidentally started with the word "digest" to its logical conclusion, please. Ew.)

But, yeah, I'd love to see people talking about this fandom. There should be so much for FF for it. What's there is choice, but there's not enough.

*whimpers*

*twitches*

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2006-05-05 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
How are you watching the canon. I watched, oh, the first season and a quarter of the second season, back when it was aon Tuesdays, before Mom demanded we watched American Idol.

So. Yes. How are you watching? The episode comm is pretty dead.

[identity profile] delurker.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
...can I just put in a general vote for everything? Nothing makes me happier than people explaining their fandoms.
Also, The Dark is Rising = love.

[identity profile] stellahobbit.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Have already voted for Stargate:SG-1 but forgot to tick 'Other' for Harry Potter. Sorry!

First, I did the poll, so there. No other comments about that.

Second, what was the name of that software you told me about awhile back that will allow me to transfer my tunes from my iPod to my computer?

Thanks and drive-by hugs!!

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-03 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I stared at this message for a moment in total horror, going: Why does she think I have a functioning memory? But my brain dredged it up in the end.

*is very proud*

It's PodUtil (http://www.kennettnet.co.uk/software/podutil.php). Unfortunately, I haven't a hope in hell of finding the LJ entry in which [livejournal.com profile] hackthis asked for, and got, recs for iPod utilities, which is where I heard about this one. But, um, the people who'd used PodUtil seemed happy with it, even the free version.

*drive-by hugs right back at you*

I'm terribly late getting to this, blame it on having not found you in time. :)

I'm one of those HP "others" - mostly because I love your humor and would love to see it applied to my current favorite fandom. :)
