Poll: Fandoms I Have Loved: Reader Input

I'm just curious, really. I have a lot of half-finished FIHL posts sitting on my hard drive - all the ones listed below are somewhere between 1% and 80% complete - and I guess, now that I've finished with Smallville, I'm feeling a little...unfocused.

Pointers, anyone?

ETA: I have already done (in reverse order) Smallville, Stargate: Atlantis, The Fast and the Furious, Oz, Ocean's 11, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Master & Commander, due South, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Sentinel, and Lord of the Rings. Those can all be found at my Fandoms I Have Loved tag.

ETA2: Allow me to smack my forehead in a painful fashion, because I completely forgot to put on the poll two others that I have in progress: Harry Potter and the DCU. Memo to me: no more posting polls late at night.

I'm expressing interest, mainly because I don't think it's going to win this round, but there should be some record that it is highly desireable: I bid for Hercules, because... well, okay, mainly because I would love to see just what kind of synopsis you'd produce for that canon, a.k.a just how does one explain the Widow Twanky? Or Ares the God of Blue Suede Shoes, for that matter.

Also, because it was right up there with Smallville with the Gay. (Your whole family is murdered? Pout a lot and knock over a few rocks. Your homosocial life partner is killed (again)? Take out entire pantheons! That's the way to assert your hetersexual identity, right there. Go, you long-haired wonderstud in leather pants!)

And the show crossed my mind for no apparent reason today, which seems very kismet. So, yeah. Hercules someday, please. *g*

Oohh...Harry Potter! Harry Potter! Because I would love your spin on the canon.

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! Yes! Everything she just said, with knobs on. Also, your FIHL for Smallville was absolutely fabulous (I love the conversations between you and your BB. Seriously) and it would just make me all kinds of happy to read your FIHL about Hercules.

(More tips for Herc: after your 'partner' is killed and you take out entire pantheons, hey, why not go grab yourself a body double from an alternate universe? Make sure he's out of the way when you get your own fella back, though. Maybe you could get him to turn into a mermaid...)

I want you to do DCU because it would comfort me to know that someone else suffered through the same insanity I did... for the love of sunshine and puppies?

[identity profile] suchthefangirl.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
You have the two shows that I would have thought of first: Sports Night and Hercules!! So much love do I have for these shows, so much so, that I own the complete runs of both, so you know I would love to see your take on them. And I know you love Sports Night 'cause that's how I found you.

The only two others that I would suggest, but thought of after I filled out the poll are both old (like I am), but are filled with slashy goodness: Man From UNCLE, which I haven't seen in decades but I remember it fondly and the fic is really good, and Starsky and Hutch, which I am currently rewatching and am shocked at what they got away with back then. Those boys are in love with each other just as surely as Herc and Iolaus are.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, I never said I'd go with the majority vote. I just wanted to know what it would be. So Hercules is definitely still a contender, if for no other reason than to show those who have not beheld the majesty of the long-haired wonderstud in leather pants what they're missing. (And, seriously. That is the perfect description of Hercules.)

Although I don't know. I feel kind of...inadequate in the face of a fandom that so obviously did not take itself even remotely seriously. And was so obviously very, very gay. And, my god, the Widow Twanky. It's like - they Fandoms I Have Loved themselves, you know?

[identity profile] lunardreamed.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I would love to see your take on Highlander. That's the fandom that introduced me to so much: fanfiction, slash, anything x-rated. You don't see that one around so much. The archives are doing alright, but it seems to have been completely missed by the blog craze. Of course, I could be associating with the wrong people. Still, I would love to see your take.

I would also like to see X-Men, just because it was the one on the list that didn't belong. And I am such a geek; I still read them.

But I probably wouldn't mind any of the others.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
You don't get a vote, darn it. I'm still bitter about how I acquired a new fandom pretty much through icons of a pig in a leather costume. I mean, seriously - that is not a story that's gonna make me Fan of the Month down at the Intensive Fan Addiction Clinic.

Although, yeah, Hercules is totally worth doing. You would not believe the chats BB and I have had over that show lately. (Example:

BB, eyeing the newly-arrived Seasons 2 and 3 DVD sets: "You know, if I didn't read your LJ, I wouldn't even have known these were coming. First rule of marriage: you're supposed to give your spouse warning before you do something really drastic."

Me, launching into the first of a full dozen prepared excuses: "It wasn't my fault! It was Mary Crawford! You know, the one with the pig icons! I was...under a spell, and also there was this demon, and some leather pants, and..."

BB: "YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TURN YOUR LIFE INTO A HERCULES EPISODE."

[There is a thoughtful pause.]

BB, consideringly: "Although if you're going to anyway, I guess I'd better, you know, check out the discs. That way we can, um, pick the best one."

Me, supportively: "Excellent idea!"

BB: "Also, I get to be Iolaus.")

I salute you for your excellent taste in small fandoms. And, seriously, I would've put DiR on the list (I do have a stub of a FIHL for it, started back when dinosaurs frolicked on the earth), but I didn't want to see no one vote for it but me. (And [livejournal.com profile] makesmewannadie; I made her read the books last year.) I love those books. They made my childhood a happy place, and I still re-read The Dark Is Rising every December.

And GO and Discworld - these are excellent suggestions. (Although I would feel weird about writing a FIHL that's significantly less funny than the actual canon.)

My Harry Potter FIHL, on the other hand, has been in progress forever. And it's, like, 12 pages of insane confusion already, and it's only half done. And that doesn't even include HPB.

Come to think of it, that would be a highly appropriate introduction to the fandom, really.

*moves HP back into the active folder*

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Um. What does the DCU have to do with sunshine and puppies?

Insanity, though - that's totally connected to the DCU. That FIHL has been in progress forever, because I kept weeping and chewing my hands when I got to the part where I tried to explain the plot.

*shudders at the memory*

*embraces you in profound sympathy*

Further Herc tips (I feel like we should start a column somewhere; Dear Abbey for the Demigod, maybe):

Should the double thing not work out and death continue to be a pain, you can set your universe on repeat. All your loved ones will reincarnate, and you can keep doing the adventure and suffering schtick throughout eternity. The downside is that your not-so-loved ones will also resurface, but then, you'd get fat and lazy without the cardiovascular hijinks of your daily Ares battle.

And it isn't the slightest bit gay to be linked for all time to your 'partner'. Nope. Not at all. Just like returning from godhood because you missed him isn't. At all.

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
*DIES*

See, I think I deserve a vote for that. HEE. Or possibly I could go post in my LJ and incite people to come over here? Ya think? *plots*

I just sort of really want a running HtLJ commentary by you and your BB. I think that would make me entirely happy. (Okay, and yes, recs would be wonderful and I'd love it if you did some. It's just that the BB dialogues are cracking me up. He gets to be Iolaus! AW.)

I was...under a spell, and also there was this demon, and some leather pants, and..."

Hey, did you know Hercules actually turns into a demon in season six? With horns and everything!

*runs*

Oh, Sports Night. One of my all-time fandom loves. It's one of those FIHL that I've hesitated about writing forever, just because - how could I do it justice?

I must admit that I've never seen either Man From UNCLE or Starsky and Hutch. But I've seen vids (and the blooper reel!) for the latter, and - oh. My. God. They were so seriously doing it, and the actors so obviously knew it. (Thus, I have added them to the list of Fandoms Where Even the Actors Knew Their Characters Were Gay, Gay, Gay, As Judged by the Blooper Reel: The Sentinel, due South, Starsky and Hutch.)

I watched the S&H movie (okay, half of it - I have an attention span problem when it comes to visual entertainment) with Best Beloved. And there were all these scenes of total and absolute gayness, and I was going, "Um, yeah, way to crank the gay up to 11, guys." And BB said thoughtfully, "No, no. The show was pretty much like this, too."

Possibly I will get S&H discs from Netflix. BB is sure to want to watch them, right?

Right?

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, no, Highlander has an active LJ presence! Seriously. Just mosey on over to [livejournal.com profile] killabeez's place and start clicking on her friends list. (She's in a lot of other fandoms, too, but that's where I found all my HL sources.)

But, see, my FIHL would be so intensely Methos-focused that I think I'd be, um. Pilloried by all true HL fans. (It's not my fault, really it isn't. He's just...very compelling.)

The wonderstud needs to be beheld. *serious nod* The behind of the wonderstud needs to be beheld.

I'm pretty sure there was some very heavy consumption of intoxicating substances behind more than one of those episodes. Really, giant formerly-bondage-geared-goddess chickens? A host of recuring characters which included a character named after deepfried chickpeas and Surfer Barbie the Diety? More than one episode involving your main character being translated into a farmyard animal?

Come to think of it, I wonder what the Herc writers are up to these days... I suspect they may have taken up writing SGA fanfic...

Good to know the crack is still in the running. *g*

i would totally have voted for dark is rising (and i would have logged out and logged back in with the two journals i DON'T EVEN USE to vote for it, too) if it had been an option. i'm just sayin'.

[identity profile] nessreader.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 02:27 am (UTC)(link)

I just read through FIHL tags - and thank you so much for the Smallville comments. So true about the horror on the TV, and so entertainingly put. There are ridiculous amounts of good stories in that fandom, but none of them are from the canon.

Would love to see you do Sports Night, which have never seen, but people-I-worshipped wrote in it, and lo, there you have it. SN's unavail on DVD or VHS in the UK (curses). It is bizarre to be reading fanfics when you haven't done canon. How on earth do you recc things when you haven't seen the show?

Seconding, possibly thirding, the Dark is Rising enthusiasm. Perhaps it has more lowkey fans than are apparent.

Also tempted to suggest Blakes 7 for the camp factor. Shiny blue eyeshadow, in an Abba's-in-the-charts-+-not-being-ironic way; a space commander who wore evening gowns on the bridge of her ship, sarcastic computer hacker in leather and studs, visibly squeezed budget because the BBC loathes sf.. give it a go, go on..

Anyway, I should comment more often. Your posts are a joy.

[identity profile] suchthefangirl.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Netflix is how I'm watching them. Go for it, you won't be disappointed. Hell, they get almost naked in the pilot and the looks they give each other- oy, don't get me started. They share food, chairs, women... and they will risk their lives anytime their partner is threatened.

As for the movie, I ran screaming from the trailer soo...

Tell BB that if she wants company, I'll watch them with her (seriously, beats sitting all alone in my room) (ok, well not really seriously because you don't know me, but, honestly I would, and I think we actually do live not too far from each other). I'd gladly watch Herc again as well.

(and DiR so rocks) (and Good Omens)

my FIHL would be so intensely Methos-focused

::blinks:: There were other characters to focus on? What?

[identity profile] chalcopyrite.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
I make pleading baby-puppy faces for DCU, because I have tried to explain it and totally failed; therefore I appreciate the head-exploding tendencies of trying to explain . . . anything, really. (I think I got as far as, "The second Robin . . ." and my audience said, "Wait, what?")

And Dark is Rising, because as much as the ending makes me whimper and demand, "Fixie!" The Dark is Rising is on my list of best-formative-books.

[identity profile] janet-carter.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
True HL fandom isn't Methos-focused? That would make me sad. Not that I've been in of HL fandom; it's more the show that my family used to watch and mock when I was in high school, because we would turn on the tv on Saturday night, and there someone would be, having his/her head taken. And Methos was the hottest thing ever. And then I caught a random rerun a couple of years ago and was like, wow, this is gay. And googled myself to a Methos/Krycek crossover.

Anyway, I had a point...oh, yes, it was pretty much "yay Methos"!

[identity profile] janet-carter.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
I may have just accidentally talked myself into voting for everything. But I always say Sports Night first, as my default answer to everything, because it's the vaguely gay fandom of my heart. And Scrubs, because it might get more people into the fandom. And then I kept thinking of reasons for the others.

I think I need more coffee for coherence.

[identity profile] lunardreamed.livejournal.com 2006-05-02 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I will. I did kind of figure that I was just hanging with the wrong people.

But, see, my FIHL would be so intensely Methos-focused that I think I'd be, um. Pilloried by all true HL fans.

Oh, but he's my favorite too. He is compelling. (To me) much more interesting than DM, who's so young and black and white. Methos is just so incredibly layered you can do almost anything with him. He's so much fun.

Actually, that's part of the fun of the HL fandom. There were so many fascinating characters introduced that, even though they didn't get as much attention on screen, they left so much fodder for fanfiction. There are so many stories DM doesn't even appear in. I don't know what "true fans" you're talking about, because I knew plenty that focused on the others. (Contrary to what the finale would have us believe, the Immortal world did not revolve around DM.)

. . . and before I get pilloried (cause it's one thing to focus on one character; it's a completely different thing to come across like I didn't like DM) It wasn't that I didn't like DM. It's because HL was all about DM that I felt by the time the series was done, there wasn't much left to do with him. Canon had pretty much spelled out his whole life, and his character kind of dictated what was to come. But there was endless fun left to have with the others. *rubs hands with evil glee*
