Poll: Vid Permissions

Recently, I have been doing some codeine-enhanced pondering of vids - specifically, linking to them or recommending them, and how we do that, and how we get permission to do that. (This was inspired by a discussion with someone, but I won't be mentioning her name unless she indicates that she wants me to.) Because in media fandom, my understanding is that fannish etiquette requires you to ask permission before you link to or recommend a vid. But I could be wrong. I have yet to get my hands on [livejournal.com profile] miss_manners161's Guide to Fannish Etiquette. That thing is so damned hard to find.

So, in the absence of a definitive ruling, I thought I'd ask vidders.

There aren't, however, a lot of vidders reading this LJ, I don't think. And I'd like to get responses from as wide a cross-section of the vid-making community as possible. So, if you are a vidder (or, as AMV people put it, editor) - or if you aren't, but a lot of vidders read your LJ, or if you have the password to the Secret Clubhouse where all the cool vidkids hang out - could you please link to or pimp this? Great would be my joy and appreciation.

Obviously, only those with LJ accounts can take this poll, but anyone can comment anonymously. (Or, heck, email me if you like - thefourthvine at livejournal dot com will find me.)

And, just to repeat: this poll is for those who have vidded only. There will be a poll for non-vidders, though, coming soon.

[Poll #796561]

There is a LJ comm called [livejournal.com profile] vidding where many vidders hang out; that might be a good place to announce this poll! Or even the [livejournal.com profile] vividcon lj, perhaps ...

[livejournal.com profile] vidding would happily accept a link to the poll :)

And now I will offer comments: I don't really understand the concept of requiring permission to link to a vid *announcement* (as opposed to linking to a *vid*). I've never heard of this. It would never occur to me not to link to a vid announcement - of course I wouldn't do it if the announcement had a specific request not to, but I must admit it wouldn't generally occur to me to look, and it would never occur to me to make such a request with respect to my own announcements.

Requesting permission to link to a *vid* is a different matter. When I rec a vid, I always adhere to the vidder's stated preferences (and in any event I generally never link directly to the downloadable file), and I hope that if I request that links to my vid(s) (should there ever be anymore, and should anyone ever want to link to them!) be to a particular page or post or whatever, people likewise will respect that.

Just swinging through to say that I'd never heard of needing permission to link to a vid announcement, either. I'll grant that I've only recced one vid and mentioned to the artist that I'd be reccing her, but she just cheerfully thanked me and that was that.

This is an interesting topic, indeed. I look forward to following this. :D

It would never occur to me not to link to a vid announcement - of course I wouldn't do it if the announcement had a specific request not to, but I must admit it wouldn't generally occur to me to look, and it would never occur to me to make such a request with respect to my own announcements.

When I started looking into recommending vids, I looked for advice on the subject. And everything I found said that you never, never link to an announcement or indeed mention the vid in any way without the vidder's permission. The implication was that you could get ex-communicated from fandom or something if you were caught doing this.

And to a certain extent, experience bore that out, and I sort of came away with the impression that many vidders hated being recommended or linked, which is why I don't do it that often - only when I have time to email everyone individually and make sure that it's okay.

But, of course, what I didn't really see until this poll was all the vidders who don't care, or who would in fact enjoy seeing their vids linked or recommended. It's not as obvious when someone doesn't care as when she does. (I mean, now that I think on it - the people who do care are probably much more likely to write up screeds on Asking Permission Before Linking. Whereas people who don't are not all that likely to write essays entitled Really, It's Fine - Go Right Ahead and Link.)

I'm wondering if maybe this perception that I got was based mostly on pre-LJ or pre-internet fandom culture. Because it's obviously not the case now. I mean, half the people who responded to this poll had never heard of asking permission to link to an announcement, and, well, if you guys aren't aware of it - you are the community in question, so.

*adjusts thoughts accordingly*

This could just be a factor in how cheap web-hosting packages have gotten. Two or three years ago, my plan (which now has the 500 GB of bandwidth) had bandwidth limits of about 8 GB/month. I could easily go over that in a day these days. A couple years ago, I was very leery as to how far out my announcement went.

Your icon made me choke with laughter, I will have you know.

Also, because of this comment, I conquered my fears and posted this to [livejournal.com profile] vidding. (I do not typically post to communities. I can count the number of times that I have done so on the fingers of one hand; I am just not a community-posting type of LJer.) So, um, thank you.
