Poll and Miscellany

Three things, almost entirely content free. (But one of them is a poll! There will be clicking, and that's always fun, right?)

I swear I will have actual content in this LJ again. Eventually. In the meantime -
  1. Remember the poll? Um, this one? Thanks to everyone who took it, by the way, and I am slowly working my way through the comments, because they are meaty and thought-filled and fun. And I'm knee-deep in meta about it, but it's taken a strange turn. So I'm hoping that some of you will do my a favor, and run a poll like this one:

    [Poll #831564]

Basically, I want you to ask your friends what archetype they think you are. (I've alphabetized the archetypes to make finding them easier.) And while you're here, please do pick mine; I'm truly curious to see if there's a difference between how I see myself and how others see me. (In this sense only. I'm not crazy.)

Sadly, I don't have bribes to offer. But if you do run a poll like this, and you also drop me a link in the comments here, I will be forever grateful. And you will be furthering the cause of meta. (I know, I know, it's not precisely ever fan's dream, but - stay with me, here, okay?)

  2. This is driving me insane, so - okay. I collect what I call genderswapped songs. Although, really, I should call them ungenderswapped songs - the song is covered by a singer of a different sex than the original one, but no gendered element of the song is changed. I have one song by Cam Clarke, from Inside Out, which is a whole CD of songs just like this. (The one I have is Son of a Preacher Man.) And I cannot find the whole CD anywhere. Does anyone have a copy of this? Or know where I can get a copy of this? I am experiencing the anguish of the thwarted collector, and it is not pretty.

  3. This is more of a bonus item; I found it interesting. If any of you watch AMVs - and if you don't, why not? - you might want to take a look at this AMV-related survey.

[identity profile] minotaurs.livejournal.com 2006-09-27 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard the rest of Cam's album, and it's nowhere near as good as Son of a Preacher Man - much mellower. Much, much, MUCH mellower. Like, 'SOAPM came off an entirely different album' mellower.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-09-27 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, since collectors cannot be swayed by rhyme, reason, or taste (seriously; I lived with a chronic collector once, so I know whereof I speak), I still totally want the CD - and I have it now, because [livejournal.com profile] malnpudl is wonderful - but thank you for warning me. Because SoaPM blew me away, and I was sort of hoping for more stuff like that, but now I will not be disappointed when I listen to it.

[identity profile] macadamanaity.livejournal.com 2006-09-27 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I, sadly, don't have that CD but I just wanted comment and say that I have an obsession with 'genderswap' songs as well. They make me strangely happy. Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies has quite a few (seeing as how they only do covers), if you didn't already know that. Two of my favourites from them are 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' and 'My Boyfriend's Back.'

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-09-27 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooo. I do have some Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies, but not either of those, oddly enough.

What if a Canada goose and a hummingbird had a baby, which was then raised in a turtle village by a family of gorillas?

This may be the sort of fan I am as well, now that I think about it.

Also: omfg a recording of a boy singing "Son of a Preacher Man". [downloads liek whoa]

What if a Canada goose and a hummingbird had a baby, which was then raised in a turtle village by a family of gorillas?

1. Biologists everywhere weep, develop nervous tics, and take up careers in accounting or religion.

2. Comedians everywhere resign, variously citing, "Too easy. Where's the challenge?" and "Goddamn it, when Mother Nature is funnier than I am, that's when I go into politics."

3. There is a mass migration of National Geographic photographers so severe that they ravage the film, battery, and native guide resources of three countries.

4. Fred Phelps blames fags. George W. Bush blames terrorists. Bloggers blame, variously: Fred Phelps, George W. Bush, gun nuts, liberals, the Catholic Church, video games, the youth of today, the liberal media, the reactionary media, the media in general, perverts, and George Lucas.

6. Cute Overload deems the hellspawn offspring "not cute." A flamewar begins.

7. The internets explode. Service is restored 19 hours later, but nine months later there is a vast upsurge in babies born. It becomes known as the "Day We Had to Make Our Own Porn Baby Boom."

In other words, basically business as usual. Why do you ask?

This may be the sort of fan I am as well, now that I think about it.

Okay, but when TV comedians hold all our country's major offices, you will be to blame. Wait. I mean thank. You will be to thank.

Also: omfg a recording of a boy singing "Son of a Preacher Man".

It brings joy to all who hear it. At least, if there's anyone who isn't rendered joyful by this song, I don't want to meet that person.

One thing I found interesting, reading the comments to your previous post, was the extent to which other people defined "fannish" very differently than I would. I mean, I'm still very fond of, say, Buffy. I have some people I interact with basically because we were once Buffy fans, and I'll watch Buffy vids, and maybe even read a Buffy story or two, but I wouldn't say I was in Buffy fandom anymore. I got the impression a lot of the people responding to that poll would say I was, though.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-09-28 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, Katie, that is next week's meta. Do you always have to be ahead of the class?

But, yeah, one of the interesting things - well, I was trying to explain this to someone, and I got all metaphorical and started talking about how there are boundaries between being fannish and merely liking something, and being fannish and being our kind of fannish, but it's a blurry boundary, and there are no maps except one made by a blind geometrist, and basically it's just living proof the geopolitical applicability of Heisenberg.

Plus, I get the sense that some people don't want to admit they aren't in fandoms any more. Which I can understand - it's tough - but it adds another layer of uncertainty to the whole topic.

Thank you! Man, I should totally have shared my love with my friends list before now, because y'all turn out to be an excellent source of genderswapped songs.

Upon reflection, I should not be surprised. The genderswap is a very fannish kind of song, isn't it?

I ran across the fan archetypes poll in [livejournal.com profile] malnpudl's journal and thought it was cool, so I decided to run it in mine. The entry is here: http://crimsonquills.livejournal.com/396830.html

Did you take the poll here (http://thefourthvine.livejournal.com/62469.html)? Because I'll be using that for comparison purposes, so if you didn't and you decide to now, you too will be in line for an imaginary cookie. (Another one, since obviously you'd get one for doing the poll, too.)

My poll. (http://jmtorres.livejournal.com/973272.html)

I have decided that I am a hydra: cut off a fandom and three more spring up in its place. This is the best metaphor I can think of to address the fact that I hang onto some fandoms forever and then some of them do die. Also that I end up with a lot of them.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-09-28 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

I really, really like the hydra archetype, and it works for you much better than magpie, which is what I called you. (Well. It seemed like the best fit. But I agonized over it.)

Just to give the girls some representation, I give you this (http://www.fascination-street.com/Covers.zip), which includes:

Tori Amos covers of

'97 Bonnie & Clyde - This is just creepy.
Angie - Live version with a long intro.
Father Figure - See above.
I'm On Fire - This is pretty hot.(No Pun)
London Girls - This one is fun.

Kate Bush - Rocket Man

Marlene Dietrich - I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face(Yes the song from My Fair Lady and yes, Marlene Dietrich. I'm that gay.)

Oh, cool! Thank you.

These will be wonderful, especially Tori Amos singing Father Figure. (I was scarred forever by the one Clark/Lex Father Figure vid, so it will have a special resonance for me.)

Yes the song from My Fair Lady and yes, Marlene Dietrich. I'm that gay.

i don't have a poll to offer, but i can offer neko case's cover of tom waits' "christmas card from a hooker in minneapolis" (http://www.sendspace.com/file/xad7cg). and if you don't have it and want it and i can manage to dig it up from the external hard drive, ani difranco's cover of bob dylan's "most of the time" was the first thing i thought of when i tried to think of genderswapped covers of that variety.

Oh man, I have a thing for genderswapped covers too. And of course, now that I'm looking for them, I can't remember any of the ones I have that are more than borderline.

One of my favorites is the Fine Young Cannibals version of Love for Sale off of the original Red Hot and Blue compilation. It's not a gendered song, per se, except that by subject matter and tradition it totally is: http://download.yousendit.com/409AB10933F9D255

Also good, but borderline is kd lang's cover of The Joker which I much prefer to the original. In particular the line "I really love your peaches//want to shake your tree" strikes me rather differently when the singer is a woman: http://download.yousendit.com/02BE526D56118286

I also love songwriters who write and perform songs from the perspective of the opposite gender. Richard Shindell does this a lot, some of his best songs are women's stories in first person, from Mary Magdalene to assorted women waiting at home during wartime.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2006-09-28 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I have a thing for genderswapped covers too.

See, I just cannot imagine how I did not realize that fans would love genderswapped covers. As I said to [livejournal.com profile] musesfool, that's what we do, basically.

And I love all kinds of covers - again, it's no surprise, since ringing on the changes on the existing text (or music) is what I love about fandom - so even if those aren't true genderswaps (and I don't know, because, um, I don't know the originals of either), I will still love them and cuddle them and rejoice in their presence. Thank you!
