I don't post about politics. But this isn't about politics.

Best Beloved and I are getting married on October 31st. We got our marriage licenses today.

Which - okay, if you're straight, or you're not in a relationship, it may not be entirely clear what that means. Best Beloved and I have been together for fifteen years, since I was 19. We've spent our entire adult lives together. We've lived together, shared our finances, bought a house. Had a child. But we could never get married.

Now we can; right now, gay couples in California can get married just like other people. Just like we're real people. Today, at the courthouse, there were six couples in the marriage license line - four male/female couples, a male/male couple (with their kid), and me and Best Beloved (with the earthling, who handled the eternal wait with more dignity and patience than anyone else in line, let me just note). We all got treated the same, although I suspect that only four of us in that line understood what a privilege that was.

For now, we are all allowed to stand in that line - to wait forever, to fill out forms, to listen to the clerk swear at her malfunctioning computer, to pay the County $70.00, to get the magical license that will let us be "Party A" and "Party B" in a marriage forever. For now, we can do that. Until November 4th. The election that I hope will change this country for the better may change things in California for the worse, largely because opposition to marriage equality is much better funded than support for marriage equality.

I know most of you don't have any extra money right now. But if you feel like giving us a gift to celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime event - well, you could donate something to Equality for All. Five bucks is the minimum. Fifteen would be a dollar for every year that Best Beloved and I have been together but unable to get married. Or, if you have some extra time, you could sign up to phone bank (from your home - you don't have to live in California). Fifteen calls would, again, be one for every year Best Beloved and I have been together.

The best gift you could possibly give us is the hope that other couples like us will be able to stand in that line in two years, in five years, in ten.

Or, hey, I will just take congratulations: Best Beloved and I are getting married!

*That's* whose name I should have put in the 'in honor of' box when I donated yesterday! D'oh!

Congratulations! You two have been together longer than I've been married, even if you add up all three exes! (even adding time I was just *with* them, not even married)

OMG, congratulations on making official the awesomeness that is your family!

Man, nothing makes me tear up faster than stories about same-sex couples who finally get to get married.

Congratulations! And thanks for the excuse to make a donation to the cause -- marriage equality was the one thing I was really consistent about supporting when I lived in MA; it only makes sense that I do the same in CA.

I cannot begin to tell you how unbelievably happy I am for both of you. REGISTER SOMEWHERE SO I CAN SEND SOMETHING. (Not, of course, in replacement of donations, but in addition to...)

ETA: Done!

How wonderful for you! Congratulations!

I promise, tomorrow I will grab my credit card and donate! (And kudos to the earthling for the patience!)

Congratulations!

I donated all I could to No on 8 several days ago. And voted against Prop 8 (absentee ballot).

Thanks for sharing your story.

New here and congrats

A friend just posted a link to your story about the dog and the sweet potato which has led me here and I like what I've been reading so I wanted to say hello after friending you.

More importantly, I wanted to say congrats to you. I've known many couples who have been denied the right to be legally married. It's a beautiful thing to see though I think there will still be a battle over it but there's always hope.

Congratulations! I gave money to Equality For All the other day and am looking forward to voting No on 8 almost as much as I am looking forward to voting for Obama. These are intense times and I'm glad you can have a day of celebration in there!

I'm sorry that, with the way the world is right now, your wedding has to be even a little bit about politics, instead of what it should be about, the two of you. But hopefully these next fifteen years will see the world become a little better, and better, and better still. I wish you happiness for all of them and more!

Congratulations! 15 years is a long time. I should know, me and my better half are having our Civil Partnership Nov 20 to coincide with our 15th anniversary. Have a fantastic day. *g*

That's awesome news, and congratulations! I hope that you have a very happy rest of your lives together. I've been married for 12 years and often take that for granted. New Zealand, where I live, introduced "civil unions" a year or two back, for both gay and straight couples. It's not a marriage, but it gives the couples the same legal rights as married couples. I hope it's something that's never revoked, though it would be better if they just called a spade a spade, and said it was a marriage.

Congratulations ^_^.

It's probably weird how absurdly happy it makes me knowing you two can have this, even if I don't know you personally. I wish you and your family the best in everything.
