I don't post about politics. But this isn't about politics.

Best Beloved and I are getting married on October 31st. We got our marriage licenses today.

Which - okay, if you're straight, or you're not in a relationship, it may not be entirely clear what that means. Best Beloved and I have been together for fifteen years, since I was 19. We've spent our entire adult lives together. We've lived together, shared our finances, bought a house. Had a child. But we could never get married.

Now we can; right now, gay couples in California can get married just like other people. Just like we're real people. Today, at the courthouse, there were six couples in the marriage license line - four male/female couples, a male/male couple (with their kid), and me and Best Beloved (with the earthling, who handled the eternal wait with more dignity and patience than anyone else in line, let me just note). We all got treated the same, although I suspect that only four of us in that line understood what a privilege that was.

For now, we are all allowed to stand in that line - to wait forever, to fill out forms, to listen to the clerk swear at her malfunctioning computer, to pay the County $70.00, to get the magical license that will let us be "Party A" and "Party B" in a marriage forever. For now, we can do that. Until November 4th. The election that I hope will change this country for the better may change things in California for the worse, largely because opposition to marriage equality is much better funded than support for marriage equality.

I know most of you don't have any extra money right now. But if you feel like giving us a gift to celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime event - well, you could donate something to Equality for All. Five bucks is the minimum. Fifteen would be a dollar for every year that Best Beloved and I have been together but unable to get married. Or, if you have some extra time, you could sign up to phone bank (from your home - you don't have to live in California). Fifteen calls would, again, be one for every year Best Beloved and I have been together.

The best gift you could possibly give us is the hope that other couples like us will be able to stand in that line in two years, in five years, in ten.

Or, hey, I will just take congratulations: Best Beloved and I are getting married!

Congratulations!

I actually donated last night (and it was a bit more than I can really afford, since I'm not working right now so I can't donate again) but I will sign up to do some calls.

Congratulations!

You were at least the third person to ask me in the past day or so to give, so I did.

What incredible news! I couldn't be happier for the two of you :-D

Oh, congratulations! *throws confetti and glitter*

Is there anything that non-Americans can do to help, btw? I can't donate because I'm a "foreign national".

Congrats!

Congratulations!!!!!

Everyone should be allowed to marry whoever she or he wants, my marriage doesn't "suffer" or "lose in importance" if anyone else is allowed to marry too and I never understood how anyone can think in such a strange way. Love is love and commitment is commitment. I wish you all the best and cross my fingers for the voting (I would have donated money but foreign nationals are not allowed).

Congratulations! I'm so happy you get the chance for this, and hope that chance continues to be there for others past November 4th :/ I'm stealing my better half away in 'registered partnership' (sort of gay marriage) over here. I can't imagine the stress we would have had if we'd been under the same sort of pressure as so many Californian couples are. Registered partnership isn't quite the same as marriage but it's a lot better than not being able to legally hook up at all.

(And married on Halloween. Win!)

Congratulations!

Mwah! Mazel Tov and blessings to you and BB and EL.

I am already a serial contributor to EQCA, and my most recent donation was a couple days ago.

I also am proudly displaying a "No on Prop 8" lawn sign in my front yard which... you must understand... neither myself nor anyone in my family has ever before put up a lawn sign, and we may never again. No bumper stickers, nada, we're not that kind of family. And needless to say, the whole household votes no, no, a thousand times no. :)

Congratulations, that is absolutely wonderful news!

I'm in the UK, so Equality for All won't let me donate to them (says you have to be in the US), but I believe Equality California let me donate before for the livelongmarry auction, so I will make a donation in your honour today.

Congratulations! I'm so excited for you, proud of California, Massachusetts, and now Connecticut for upholding marriage equality, and I'm badgering every Californian I know to reject Prop 8 on election day. May you and Best Beloved have 15 married years to go along with the 15 pre-making-honest-women-of-each-other thing, and fifteen after that, and after that, and after that, on and on. Y'all deserve it. *hugs*

Wooohooo! Congratulations! <3

Oh, many, many hearty congratulations! :D

There's not much I can do from the UK but cross my fingers and spread the word, but I will do that. And I'm fairly sure you'll have my California-inhabiting aunt's vote. Not to mention the full support of all curtains everywhere. :)

Congratulations!!

That's such brilliant news - congratulations to you both (all)! I hope you have many more happy years together.

Congratulations, you fabulousness! I am so happy for you and BB.

I can only hope that legislation everywhere continues to be changed for the better. We've only had legal gay marriage in the Netherlands since 2001, and it still feels like that was yesterday. Fingers crossed.
