[Poll] MUSICS

For reasons that do not need exploring at this juncture, I am a Giant Ball of Anxiety.[1] I am actually considering renaming myself that (GBA for short, I guess, although I do realize that that is not the ideal acronym). I cannot sleep without having the worst anxiety dreams I've had in years, and that's assuming I get to sleep, which mostly I don't; I just stare at the clock and think anxious thoughts. My skin is breaking out! I am covered in hives! I keep walking into things! If this keeps up, by the time I get to Vividcon, I will be fit for nothing but crying in my hotel room for three days. I, um, really don't want to spend three days crying in a hotel room. For the record. I mean, I could cry at home much more cheaply; there's no point in going to Chicago for that. So I have decided it is time to make some posts designed to distract me and, with luck, reduce the possibility that I will have to ask for an extremely late change to my badge name. ("If 'GBA' doesn't work for you, you could always call me Inappropriate Hysterics!")

The first such post went smashingly. I thank you all. I now know much more about classic beauty. I've also learned that if Gina Torres and Audrey Hepburn were, through the miracle of - time traveling lesbian reproduction magicians? Look, I think this is the kind of thing that doesn't need a reason - to have a child, it would be the most classically gorgeous person of all time. I think someone needs to get right on making that happen.

So. We have done photos! Clearly it is time for MUSIC. And also POLLS, as those are the traditional, time-honored distraction techniques of people too distressed to provide actual content.

This is a poll for people who have music playing devices or programs. I am hoping that's most of you. There are some, you know, questions and things, but there is also a Bonus Content Option that I am really really hoping a lot of you take, because nothing is more distracting than new music.

So, to start things off in the Bonus Content arena: the most played song on my iTunes is Roscoe, by Midlake, which I have played 513 times. (Obviously, this is a hate-free zone. If you think it sucks, don't tell me. Instead, post your most played song. I bet it is far, far better than mine. Cooler. More classic. Whatever.)

And the song I am most obsessed with at the moment is The Chaconne, by Dessa.

Now, tell me yours! (People not taking the poll are still entirely invited to post their most played and current obsession songs in the comments, by the way. Encouraged. Begged. Whatever.) And also about your music. (And join with me in lamenting that there's no numerical entry poll option that would do averages and means and so on but not require scales.)

[1] Okay, I know at least some of you are going to want to know, so: it's mostly to do with Leaving My Baby for the First Time Ever. Also imperfect traveling arrangements. And OMG SOCIAL TIME fear. But mostly Leaving My Baby, who is actually three and will be at home with his mommy and perfectly fine, no matter what my dreams persist in suggesting.

Kanye West "All of the Lights"

Nina Simone "Feelin Good"

Adele "I'll Be Waiting"

"Lift Off" (Jay/Kanye/Bey) was just released today but given my level of obsession with WTT already, I am forecasting a high probability of wandering around VVC, suggesting various songs from the disc for vidding purposes. Possibly complete with graphs, charts and heartfelt pleas.

Roscoe is in my top twenty, which isn't bad for a collection of 8000, I feel (less than 1000 unlistened-to). I love that song.

I've had to scrap my playcounts a few times due to technological mishaps, so this is really my best guess, but here are three of my all-time favorites and three recent obsessions:

Aimee Mann (with the Decemberists) - The Engine Driver
Mansions - Gotta Be Alone (I have several versions of this song and prefer an acoustic one without the beat that this one has--but it's not on YouTube)
Ben Folds - Such Great Heights (Postal Service cover)

Bruno Mars - Grenade
My Chemical Romance - Planetary (Go!)
Cat Stevens - I Think I See the Light

I think I'm going to be an outlier in your figures, so I didn't respond to any of the numeric questions. I could tell by your first question that I might mess up your data. But here it is if you want it:

How many songs on my player? 19 (I really couldn't justify rounding to 1000, sorry)

How many by women? 5.5 (one of them is a male/female duet)

I did answer none to how many playlists and how many songs have you never listened to.

The full score of The Good The Bad and The Ugly is rocking my socks.

Okay, but you have to understand: when I'm making a vid, I sometimes put the song I intend to vid to on repeat for HOURS while I watch footage. It's part of my process. So actually, of the top twenty listened-to songs in my itunes, 14 of them are songs that I have made vids to or intend to make vids to or once intended to make vids to but then stopped caring about. The top song that I've "listened" to is actually Neil Young's Heart of Gold, at #11, followed by Neko Case's Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, at #12. Plus sometimes I listen on my computer and sometimes on my ipod (the ipod is how I listen to music in the car, for example) and I don't synch them, so the numbers are probably off anyway. I suspect that my most listened-to car song is Mountain Goats, "No Children," which I listen to to cheer myself up because it's so peppy.

I am now sad that my phone doesn't track plays, because that is where I play most of my music. :( So my most played on my computer is Cantata #75 (here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5jL8RAwwPg), because I love Bach when I'm working. Also because "I take up my suffering with joy" is apt for someone dissertating.

I am also a little confused by the lack of playlists. I have a few I made myself, but several that came from fic. They are posted right there with the fic! They are awesome! Does everyone else not retain them in their original list form??

In my defense, there are so many un-listened-to songs in my library because I lost about 6+ years of listening data in an hard drive crash last year and haven't been listening to enough music to really get through everything again. Plus I have a problem where I cannot delete a song if it used to be important or reminds me of someone or somewhen, even if I don't really want to listen to it these days.

You thought you were joking with Theremin Core, but during our last year of undergraduate my husband went through a theremin phase while at the same time being a member of a metalcore band. For the question about female singers, I punted and said 10. I tend to listen to albums again and again, not individual songs, and if you look at my top 20 albums and eliminate all the Broadway (men and women!) and classical (instrumental music only, tyvm), you're mainly left with Indigo Girls and Great Big Sea. Close enough?

"Who I'd Be", from Shrek the Musical is my most played song in iTunes, but I think that would be different if I added in the numbers from my iPod. Gives away a major spoiler re: Princess Fiona, but only if you've never seen any of the movies.

I left off answering how many songs are unlistened to for the same reasons that my play count numbers are skewed--computer transfers and iTunes resets. But for the last few months I was listening to Deeper Love (Dubstep Remix)-orig. Aretha Franklin/remixer Dopaminex-a lot (all links YouTube unless otherwise specified) and I've had Adele's Rolling the Deep on repeat recently.

But this also totally misses:

* my obsession with all things Janelle Monae (OMG she was on heavy rotation; I love everything she does!), Dessa, Florence + the Machine, and Jill Scott (esp. the Love Rain (Grooveshark link) and Golden);

*and all the stuff from my work computer which, if I had to guess, probably has one of the following as most played: Regina Spektor (probably On the Radio; Gotan Project (could be anything but the video for Diferente is pretty neat; Brighter Days by Cajmere f. Dajae (Layo & Bushwacka remix; Grooveshark link); Lauryn Hill's Everything is Everything; Talib Kweli's Get By; or the Masters at Work remix of Nina Simone's See-Line Woman

*and the fact that I now listen to a lot of music through Pandora based on groups like Ozomatli, Justice, and The Prodigy

My answers may have broken the poll because according to it, I've never listened to any of my music. ;)

In fact, I have 44k songs in my iTunes library, and 23k of those have 0 play count (although that's mostly because they're older stuff and I had a giant hard drive crash about 5 years ago from which my iTunes library is still recovering).

235 playlists - 110 of them "smart" playlists, 125 of them regular ones.

And I feel bad that only 6 of my top 20 are "by" women, but I should probably clarify - 3 are by solo female artists, 2 are by a pair of women, one is a man/woman duet, one is by a man with bonus vocals by a woman (but I counted it as by a man as that's who got the attribution), 4 are by men or all-male bands, 2 are not actually music but looping nature tracks (one of a thunderstorm, one of a harbour) that I use as grey noise to help me sleep, and all the rest are classical and I have no idea about the gender of the performers. :)

And, because I want my bonus points! Katy B - Louder was my most-played track, and my current obsession is the Glee cover of My Chemical Romance's "Sing". (I actually prefer the MCR version but I've already listened that to death.)

I'm sorry you are having anxiety! I think we all love sharing our favourite music, so this is a great post. <3

I put zero for songs I haven't listened to, but the actual number is 200. ;) 1000 is quite a jump! There's probably a lot of people who also rounded down.

My most played song (at 27 times) is "I could be in love with someone like you" by Jason Robert Brown. It's from a two person musical called "the last five years" that I have actually seen in person. It's a cool musical, but this song was actually cut from the stage version I saw.

The musical is the story of one couple's marriage and divorce. The twist is that the woman is telling it from the end to the beginning, and the guy is telling it from the beginning to the end. They only ever sing together when the timelines cross during the wedding scene.

Most people will know it from this SGA McShep vid:

The song I am currently obsessed with is "Bulletproof" by La Roux. She is a fabulous young singer. It has a fun video too:

Thanks to pretty much listening to it nonstop for a semester while walking to and from campus, Depeche Mode's "Wrong" is my most played song according to iTunes. That link goes to the official video, which is creepy and disturbing.

I am currently obsessed with The Civil Wars' "Poison and Wine" because my period loves to listen to this song and cry while driving. The two singers' voices complement each other beautifully, and omg the harmonies are so gorgeous. Also, I feel like there should be a million vids featuring every tragic OTP to this song.

despite my ipod having ALL THE MUSIC, my phone is much more convenient to use (of the songs on my phone, about 350 of the 500 performed by women vocalists), so i'm not sure what exactly my most played track really is, historically. i've also had a couple of OH, SORRY, DIDN'T KNOW YOU WANTED THAT TO WORK instances with itunes; consequently, i decided for my peace of mind to no longer care about tracked music. XD

my most played track right now, though, is 2ne1's "i am the best", a kpop girl-group badass dance song with definite bollywood influences. i still remember only two months ago when i couldn't get a handle on whether i could even stand their music enough to enjoy their shiny, shiny music videos, but here i am. XD

the video is here, with the note that it is very shiny with not insignificant number of quick cuts and flashing lights, though there is a less hectic dance cover here by an adorable filipino american crew of four dudes in a public park. both videos have their merits, haha! my favorite part of the official video is definitely when they are smashing up records with baseball bats. (my favorite part of the dance cover is anytime the ones with flippy hair flip their hair ♥)

My three most played are tied in iTunes and I have no idea which wins because my iPhone doesn't keep track of plays.

1) Mirotic by Dong Bang Shin Ki/TVXQ - Korean version. [download song]

2) Survivor by Tohoshinki (which is also DBSK/TVXQ, but Japanese) [download song]

3) Empty by JYJ - who are three of the guys formerly from DBSK/Toho (they sort of split 2 years ago), and this is from their recent English album. There's no official video, so the Youtube link is to a live performance they did for Billboard. [download song]

As for my faves right now, still Empty and Survivor, and also two songs by a new group, Aziatix, who are three Korean-Americans. I have a bit of a crush on Eddie Shin - the one with the long hair and the first singer in both songs below:

Go and Slippin' Away
[Go - download song] I have Slippin' Away (of course!), but it's iTunes purchased, and I didn't reformat it so I can't share it.

Also, bonus, Bolero by Tohoshinki, which I listen to very frequently (it was number 6 on my most played) and is just amazing live at Tokyo Dome which of course I just had to watch again for the umpteenth time. :-P [download song]

Most of my most played songs are, well, they're high voltage songs for workouts. So I don't necessarily love Rollin', but it's excellent for the pace I jog my first mile to. Also, I have a bad habit of hitting replay before the fade-out ends, especially when exercising, so there are tons of songs I've listened to a billion times but only managed to actually get to the end to once or twice. But I do love Girl for All Seasons by Northern State, which is my next most listened to. Great to jog to. Especially if you're angry.

I'm currently obsessed with My Number by Tegan and Sara because of this X-men vid that broke my heart. But really what songs I play depends on what I'm doing, which is why most of my "top 25 played" playlist songs are not actually my favorite songs, if by favorite songs we mean the ones that touch us most deeply. They're just the songs that gets me exercising.

The other thing I'm obsessed with at the moment is a genre I call "girls think sex is fun too", a subset of my sex playlsit. Doesn't everyone have a sex playlist? ...No?. Some are which could probably be classified as cheap party songs? And there are probably references to unsafe sexual practices, and some of the bi-ness is probably pandering to dudes but, gdi, women can have fun with sex and kink and dancing too. >:( (Let's Play is my favorite, or maybe Mirrors? No, definitely Let's Play)

2 in the Morning by Girlicious
Let's Play by Kristina Maria
Mirrors by Natalie Kills
I Get Off by Halestorm
Take Me On the Floor by The Veronicas
Obsession by Sky Ferreria

I also like remixes? And my favorite currently is Little Wing as covered by David Garrett.

I dunno about Gregorian Chant-Hop, but this is Gregorian Chant Rap. It's pretty cool.

*Except for the one fanvid, I have not actually watched any of them. I don't like coming into a song with preconceptions. Also I hate music vids.

I have ... 4 sex playlists. So you're not alone.

My current iTunes stats don't even make a laughable pretense at accuracy, since they get wiped out with disturbing frequency.

So I had to go with my best guess, in which I know for a fact that I racked up exactly 50 plays of My Chemical Romance's Na Na Na before it was even legally available, and at least another 100 post-buying-legally-pre-album-release, before Danger Days went on to become my most listened to album of the last year.

Similarly, my saying that I haven't listened to roughly 1000 of my current 10,732 tracks is based on knowing that a majority of my music comes from my own CDs, and I download all of the free iTunes music every week, and for both of those I make a point to listen to all of it at least once. So the only things that I would have skipped would be something I borrowed and haven't gotten around to yet, or was so horrific I just couldn't take the whole thing.
