[Poll] MUSICS

For reasons that do not need exploring at this juncture, I am a Giant Ball of Anxiety.[1] I am actually considering renaming myself that (GBA for short, I guess, although I do realize that that is not the ideal acronym). I cannot sleep without having the worst anxiety dreams I've had in years, and that's assuming I get to sleep, which mostly I don't; I just stare at the clock and think anxious thoughts. My skin is breaking out! I am covered in hives! I keep walking into things! If this keeps up, by the time I get to Vividcon, I will be fit for nothing but crying in my hotel room for three days. I, um, really don't want to spend three days crying in a hotel room. For the record. I mean, I could cry at home much more cheaply; there's no point in going to Chicago for that. So I have decided it is time to make some posts designed to distract me and, with luck, reduce the possibility that I will have to ask for an extremely late change to my badge name. ("If 'GBA' doesn't work for you, you could always call me Inappropriate Hysterics!")

The first such post went smashingly. I thank you all. I now know much more about classic beauty. I've also learned that if Gina Torres and Audrey Hepburn were, through the miracle of - time traveling lesbian reproduction magicians? Look, I think this is the kind of thing that doesn't need a reason - to have a child, it would be the most classically gorgeous person of all time. I think someone needs to get right on making that happen.

So. We have done photos! Clearly it is time for MUSIC. And also POLLS, as those are the traditional, time-honored distraction techniques of people too distressed to provide actual content.

This is a poll for people who have music playing devices or programs. I am hoping that's most of you. There are some, you know, questions and things, but there is also a Bonus Content Option that I am really really hoping a lot of you take, because nothing is more distracting than new music.

So, to start things off in the Bonus Content arena: the most played song on my iTunes is Roscoe, by Midlake, which I have played 513 times. (Obviously, this is a hate-free zone. If you think it sucks, don't tell me. Instead, post your most played song. I bet it is far, far better than mine. Cooler. More classic. Whatever.)

And the song I am most obsessed with at the moment is The Chaconne, by Dessa.

Now, tell me yours! (People not taking the poll are still entirely invited to post their most played and current obsession songs in the comments, by the way. Encouraged. Begged. Whatever.) And also about your music. (And join with me in lamenting that there's no numerical entry poll option that would do averages and means and so on but not require scales.)

[1] Okay, I know at least some of you are going to want to know, so: it's mostly to do with Leaving My Baby for the First Time Ever. Also imperfect traveling arrangements. And OMG SOCIAL TIME fear. But mostly Leaving My Baby, who is actually three and will be at home with his mommy and perfectly fine, no matter what my dreams persist in suggesting.

I left blank the question about how many of my top 20 songs are by women because the answer is zero. My top songs are all by The Black Summer Crush and Oleander, and both of those bands have the same lead singer, so. :(

Song with 606 listens: The Black Summer Crush - "Memphis Sun" which can he streamed and downloaded from isound.com/black_summer_crush

Song I am currently obsessed with: Allen Stone - "Unaware"

My statistics re - most listened to are completely skewed, because every so often I have to delete all my music from my Winamp and re-import it (it lives on an external HD and sometimes the HD's not with me). But since I've been careful with that for a while they're accurate for at least the last few months.

My most-listened-to song is Vienna Teng covering "Fields of Gold", by Sting. I knew I loved this song for a long time, but I couldn't remember what it was called, so when a friend of mine gifted me a bunch of Vienna Teng songs and it turned up I was completely delighted.

My current obsession is The Wombats - Tokyo (Vampires and Wolves. Well, that and everything from Panic! at the Disco's new album, Vices and Virtues.

I am currently obsessed with Frank Turner's "I Am Disappeared", which makes me weep in my car on a regular basis.

I have 25,000+ songs in my iTunes and, right now, only 54 that I have never listened to, plus about 25 more that aren't rated, for whatever reason. (The rating of my iTunes library was an 18 month project that nearly destroyed my will to live, but has paid off in ratings-based smart playlists.) Those 54 are all new stuff that I've bought or gotten from bands or publicists (for review) in the last ten days, since my iPod died; I mostly listen to new stuff at work and I can't right now, so I'm behind. But I am also the sort of person who goes to 100+ concerts a year, so I know I'm an outlier in most music data polls.

I find my natural preference is for songs sung by men so I have made it a goal the last few years to seek out women artists and spend time listening to them. It's been a great decision; I've found a bounty of excellent female artists! When I get busy and lazy, though, I always default back to male singers.

(Yes, I posted on both of your entries. Mua ha ha!)

My itunes currently has about 10,000 songs in it. I've really been pruning a lot lately, and still have a lot to go. I'd like to get it to where it's almost all five-star songs. Right now there's a lot of stuff I've downloaded and not listened to, and some of it is getting dumped without ever getting a listen, because that's easier than listening to everything and making a decision.

Anyway, I chose that I have zero playlists, even though I actually do have one. What I listen to pretty much all of the time is my five-star playlist set on random. It currently has ~1800 songs, because I am bad with ratings and pretty much can only go with zero stars or five stars and nothing in between. XD So five stars is anything I really like a lot and would be happy to listen to any time. I don't listen to my main music library unless I'm sorting stuff, because then I'll just get stuck listening to stuff I don't know or particularly like, because there's so much unsorted. Once I get the sorting done, I will probably just listen to the main library rather than a playlist, though.

I got a new computer about a year ago and was unable to import my itunes library. I didn't lose the songs themselves, but I lost the associated info that is stored in itunes about ratings and number of plays and such, so my stats are messed up because of that, but right now the number-one listened to song is My Chemical Romance's Bulletproof Heart, with 24 plays. I don't really feel like I have a current obsession, but I have really been liking Spitz's Boku wa Jet lately. It's so bouncy.

And what song are you obsessed with lately?

Kaiser Cheif's "Child of the Jago". And Deathcab for Cutie's "St Peter's Cathedral". Although I should also point out that I've been listening to both of their new CDs on quite frequent repeat. Oh, and Gotye's "Night Drive" from his "Like Drawing Blood" album.

Also, I don't relaly have permanent playlists. I have folders of music (artists by album and a great big mixed folder called "misc" for all those one-off songs I like by artists I don't particularly love) and I occasionally use playlists to gather music for writing fics (like, each story will have a different collection of sounds attached, but those playlists frequently get deleted when the story's done). I also have a dance and angst collection for writing needs, but generally I listen to my music by folders.

*is fazed by the idea of having 1000+ songs on her computer* My method of playing music doesn't allow for stats, either, but I do know that I've been listening to these two songs a lot lately:
Who Put the Bomp (In the Bomp, Bomp, Bomp), by Barry Mann, and
Shout, by the Isley Brothers.
They may not be your style, but they cheer me up.

For reasons too tedious to enumerate, I am suffering from a lack of data and cannot answer your survey.

Two songs that get a lot of play around here:
Sleater Kinney, Call The Doctor
The Mountain Goats, Love Love Love

Music I'm obsessed with right now: I'm actually going through a phase of exploring my CD collection while driving. Some Motown, this great Hungarian-Australian trio I saw busking years ago and decided I had to buy their CDs, the soundtrack to Labyrinth, whatever I haven't heard for a while. (The greatest driving music is Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. Familiar enough not to interfere with driving, complex enough to be interesting.)

I actually put a bunch of theremin stuff on my to-buy list just a few days ago.

Did someone say Digital Baroque?

I didn't answer with them but to reduce anxiety I really recommend Sola Rosa: Turn Around feat. Iva Lamkum, Humanised feat. Bajka

Songs I'm obsessed with at the moment (just some of the few):
Mean Son of a Gun and Hillbilly Music, by Kitty, Daisy & Lewis
Gravity by Vienna Teng
Hurricane Drunk by Florence & the Machine

My answers are pretty silly because I just got a new ipod and reinstalled iTunes, so it's all really new - my most-played is only 7 plays (which definitely isn't right, but w/e.) Still fun though.

I also went with figures in iTunes (although I have more songs than your poll went up to) rather than my ipod, which skews the results somewhat, because I don't sync. Top songs would stay the same, though.

I use shuffle more than I use playlists &mdash that way I will eventually listen to everything. Unless I'm obsessed with a particular song, I'm currently working from the bottom up and start with a different song every time.

I should note that while I don't have many playlists, one of them is my relaxation/wind down playlist and I play that nearly every night. Most of the artists included are women: Barbara Bonney (one song: Ave Maria); Linda Brava (violin chamber music); Beth Hart (one song: LA Song - here; BOA (one song: duvet); Emmylou Harris (almost all of her music); Emma Shapplin (first two albums); Hayley Westernra (everything except the Christmas album); Yulia Townsend (two albums); and others.

Hope that link works.

It's a shuffle playlist, but the reason the Beth Hart song is the most played is because it's at the top and is the song I usually start with. The only playlists I have set for a particular order are the one that's a recreation of an old mix tape (and they have to be in that order), soundtracks, or the six CDs of Handel.

And yeah, no obsessions at the moment, but the obsessions tend to be albums, not individual songs.

My play counts were blitzed about 6 months ago, so they're a bit low and skewed. Mainly I find this ABSOLUTELY FASCINATING because I cannot imagine having unlistened songs on my music player. I listen to and rank every single song on my hard drive, and I ruthlessly erase songs that I don't like. (When my play counts and ratings were erased in computer transfer 6 months ago? I relistened to and rerated every single song.)

Most of my playlists simply involve my ranking and I listen to things on shuffle a lot, so my favorite songs aren't necessarily the ones in the Top 20. But I do happen to like these:

Most listened to song (#1): Voce Existe Em Mim by Josh Groban. This song gives me chills, there's no other way to put it.

Most played song (tied): Lion by May'n and Ai Nakajima. One of the opening themes for the anime "Macross F", written by one of my favorite song writers, Yoko Kanno. I have admittedly never seen F, but I have a soft spot for the Macross series in general, which is the big mecha show where people achieve world peace through the power of song.

Current obsession: Fantastipo by Toraji/Haiji. It's a few years old, but I get on Fantastipo kicks every once in a while, where I listen to this song a lot and call everything "fantastipo". The whole thing just cracks me up.

And in an attempt to include something in English (I listen to many English songs! I swear!)... The songs that I would most like to see in a mash-up:
Sleep by The Dandy Warhols and Sleepwalker by Adam Lambert
. Why has no one made a mash-up of these two songs, yet? WHY?

MUSIIIIIIIC! ♥

I answered the "How many playlists do you have?" question with 10, because that's about the amount I have at any given time. But I switch them out constantly, so the total number of playlists is much higher. :)

And I was surprised and pleased to see, that more than half the songs in my top 20 are by women. But less than 50% of my top 20 artists are women, so I guess I can wipe that smug look off my face again. ;)

I was actually surprised to see that A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours by The Smiths is my most played song. I did not expect that at all. I fully expected it to be Aesop Rock's Daylight and it probably is, but most of those listenings took place before they could be counted by last.fm.

I seriously couldn't decide on one single song I'm obsessed with lately, they are all so awesome:
The Black Ghosts - Some Way Through This
Icona Pop - Manners
Digitalism - Circles
Childish Gambino - Freaks and Geeks
Pete Rock and Smif N Wessun - "Roses" feat. Freeway

And I only thought of this now, duh: James Blake - Limit To Your Love, which I am currently using for a vid and have therefor listened to an unholy amount without growing sick of it. I think this is a testament to how good this song is. Or how obsessed I am with it. Either. :D

I don't use a media player that tracks stats so all I know is that I have over 2500 music files in RealPlayer and my beloved mp3 player holds 4GB.

My music isn't very edgy. The top five artists according to the number of songs I have are Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Ryan Bingham, Leonard Cohen and Prince.

I'm currently obsessing over Ryan Bingham and the Dead Horses. Great band! Time is flying so I'm just going to link you to a couple of posts about the band which have links that hopefully are still live.

My ipod and itunes don't automatically synch, so my playcount doesn't update. As a result, I couldn't tell you my most listened to song but here are some of my favourites (all on youtube).

Wonders never cease by Morcheeba
Such an optimistic and uplifting song, it always makes me smile.

The black horse & the cherry tree- KT Tunstall (live)
This is a very fun song, particularly performed live where KT uses looping rather than a band to play it.

Carey - Cyndi Lauper (live) (song starts at about 40 seconds in)
Since you said you were stressed, here's a song that relaxes me - Cyndi just sort of sits back into this cover and chills out for almost six minutes. Quite different from the original.

Wonder of Birds - Innocence Mission
You are probably also familiar with this song from Laura Shapiro and Morgan Dawn's Due South vid, and a combination of the memory of the vid and the song itself never fails to make me feel more positive about life.

Woe is Mine - Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson
A song by Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson, who are married and are Australian country singers. The first two minutes or so is Kasey talking about songs they teach their son, with somewhat amusing results. (Her Australian accent is also pretty clear here, which you may enjoy if you like hearing australian accents?) A song where the lyrics are over the top angsty and the music is upbeat. I love this song, which in my head has a fanvid of all the very angsty moments in various mangas I have seen.

I feel like some of my results are skewed by two things - I lost a good portion of my songs when my external harddrive broke (I don't know how many songs, but I went from having 49 days worth of songs down to just 13 days, so it was QUITE A LOT), and I also recently bought the new Panic! album and had the whole thing on repeat for a day, which takes up 16 "most played" slots. If I had mastered the art of keeping my play counts every time I've had to reset my library, the results would be different.

Anyway! Here are some musics:
Panic! at the Disco - Let's Kill Tonight
M.I.A. - U.R.A.Q.T.
M.I.A. - Tell Me Why
Snow Patrol feat. Martha Wainwright - Set the Fire to the Third Bar (this is another one I can listen to on repeat for hours)

I don't use playlists, but not because I listen to everything. I just skip around between albums. I'll usually listen to an entire album in order, though I do often skip to the next track in the middle of a song.

That was unbearable! I'm going to go and re-do it under a different account with my Last.fm data instead of my iTunes, because they are BOTH WRONG.

Also I like some things from pretty much all genres of music except rap and Coldplay.

My counts are sort of off because this last christmas, when I got my ipod, I switched to iTunes and all my counts got restarted.

As for playlists, I have about 80, with names like "Hips" and "Stalker Anthems" and "throw down now". Yeah.

Most played song JJ Heller's The Boat Song
This song was written for their 3 year old daughter and is based on a book they read to her at night.

Current Obsession Cobra Starship's You Make Me Feel (Lalala)
I don't know why, but I adore this song. I think it might be the lalala part.

For a long stretch there, I'd listen to "Shiver Me Timbers" over and over on my commute, pretending that I would in fact soon be up in the crow's nest, where the clouds're like headlines on a new front-page sky--rather than going in for fourteen hours at the office.

I'd listen to either the simpler version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_F0DIJyHRs) or the cheesier version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eux2qnnslac), depending on how melodramatic I was feeling.

Now that my job will be giving me the opportunity to study Persian full-time instead of going to the office, I've been trying to beef up my language skills. A recent movie about underground/modern Iranian music was on Netflix streaming, and I especially liked one of the artists they featured, Rana Farhan. She does bluesy/jazzy songs in a smoky voice, often with the lyrics coming from Rumi's poetry. "Drunk with Love" was the song of hers featured on the soundtrack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwrB9StldJA.

As a bonus: Here's a song I like for anxiety-soothing, Leonard Cohen's "Anthem": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ma5tF6TJpA.
