[Poll] MUSICS

For reasons that do not need exploring at this juncture, I am a Giant Ball of Anxiety.[1] I am actually considering renaming myself that (GBA for short, I guess, although I do realize that that is not the ideal acronym). I cannot sleep without having the worst anxiety dreams I've had in years, and that's assuming I get to sleep, which mostly I don't; I just stare at the clock and think anxious thoughts. My skin is breaking out! I am covered in hives! I keep walking into things! If this keeps up, by the time I get to Vividcon, I will be fit for nothing but crying in my hotel room for three days. I, um, really don't want to spend three days crying in a hotel room. For the record. I mean, I could cry at home much more cheaply; there's no point in going to Chicago for that. So I have decided it is time to make some posts designed to distract me and, with luck, reduce the possibility that I will have to ask for an extremely late change to my badge name. ("If 'GBA' doesn't work for you, you could always call me Inappropriate Hysterics!")

The first such post went smashingly. I thank you all. I now know much more about classic beauty. I've also learned that if Gina Torres and Audrey Hepburn were, through the miracle of - time traveling lesbian reproduction magicians? Look, I think this is the kind of thing that doesn't need a reason - to have a child, it would be the most classically gorgeous person of all time. I think someone needs to get right on making that happen.

So. We have done photos! Clearly it is time for MUSIC. And also POLLS, as those are the traditional, time-honored distraction techniques of people too distressed to provide actual content.

This is a poll for people who have music playing devices or programs. I am hoping that's most of you. There are some, you know, questions and things, but there is also a Bonus Content Option that I am really really hoping a lot of you take, because nothing is more distracting than new music.

So, to start things off in the Bonus Content arena: the most played song on my iTunes is Roscoe, by Midlake, which I have played 513 times. (Obviously, this is a hate-free zone. If you think it sucks, don't tell me. Instead, post your most played song. I bet it is far, far better than mine. Cooler. More classic. Whatever.)

And the song I am most obsessed with at the moment is The Chaconne, by Dessa.

Now, tell me yours! (People not taking the poll are still entirely invited to post their most played and current obsession songs in the comments, by the way. Encouraged. Begged. Whatever.) And also about your music. (And join with me in lamenting that there's no numerical entry poll option that would do averages and means and so on but not require scales.)

[1] Okay, I know at least some of you are going to want to know, so: it's mostly to do with Leaving My Baby for the First Time Ever. Also imperfect traveling arrangements. And OMG SOCIAL TIME fear. But mostly Leaving My Baby, who is actually three and will be at home with his mommy and perfectly fine, no matter what my dreams persist in suggesting.

I filled out the poll based on my iTunes on my laptop, which is perhaps misleading, as most of the music listening I do is actually via my iPod. Which I am currently experimenting with by listening to all 1051 songs that are on it all the way through, without skipping or repeating. I'm about halfway through. But I can't concentrate on things that well if music is playing, so I basically just listen to music during traveling/walking/doing menial tasks.

Anyway, highest play count on my laptop is Passing Afternoon, which is perhaps not the best thing to listen to when looking for something to cheer oneself up with, unfortunately.

Current obsession - we-ll, from my itunes is When I Was a Boy. But I just yesterday learned about John Williams is a Man and I've already listened to it three times in the last hour. So. There you go. Two obsessions for the price of one!

Not sure how accurate my answers are, because I had to reinstall iTunes a few months ago when I got a new hard drive, so that wiped all the iTunes statistics.

Taglio! by SJ Tucker (aka Sooj) is my most-played, and I'm currently obsessed with Sinister Kid by The Black Keys. I have a vid idea for Sinister Kid, but I'm never going to make it because I haven't even touched Premiere in several years. I've actually been listening to a lot of The Black Keys lately; I've been on a blues rock kick.

My music-listening habits are not easily compatible with this poll. I don't have a music player that tracks number of plays -- or rather, I do, but the majority of the music I listen to isn't there -- and, like a lot of people (I am relieved to learn), I do the thing where you listen to the Song of the Moment on a loop for days on end, and also when I am sleeping. In fact, because I mostly listen to music on YouTube, most of my "playlists" are just the same song so I don't have to keep hitting replay.

Also, I very much use music to get through hard times, so the number of plays often depends on the how long a certain difficult period lasted. So the songs I listened to during the I Am A Giant Ball Of About-To-Come-Out-To-My-Parents Anxiety period have more plays than the ones I listened to during the I Think I Am Being Quasi-Broken Up With By Someone I Was Not Actually Dating period because the former period was much longer.

Anyway! I have less than two hundred songs in my iTunes and YouTube playlists put together, but I listen to more that I never bothered to make playlists for. I don't know what the top twenty are so I don't know how many of those are by female artists, but there's a lot of female artists. My guess is that the top-played song is Vienna Teng's "Recessional," and that Alexi Murdoch's "Orange Sky," Vienna Teng's cover of Brian Webb's "Leaving Atlanta," and Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson's "Winter Song" are high on the list as well. Lately-ish I listen to a lot of Yael Naim's "New Soul," Yiruma's "A River Flows In You," "I Believe" from The Book of Mormon, and covers of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," ahaha I feel so cliche.

iTunes ate my stats

[personal profile] todeskun 2011-08-20 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
But back when I was listening to actual music (as opposed to audio books exclusively) "An Poc Ar Buile" (http://www.last.fm/music/Gaelic+Storm/_/An+Poc+Ar+Buile) was in pretty much every playlist I made. Close second would probably have been "Va, Pensiero" from Nabucco, "Baby It's Cold Outside", or "A Heart in New York" by Art Garfunkel.

And, yes, the "Northwest Passage" I'm referencing is the same song as the one at the end of dS. http://www.last.fm/music/Stan+Rogers/Northwest+Passage/Northwest+Passage

...Although, if we were going by "most listened to" stats on my iPhone, I suspect the answer would be the audiobook "Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex" (by Mary Roach); no, seriously, I have all 3 of her books in audiobook format and have been listening to them on an endless loop for the past week, I think.

Alas, I cannot be a good sample in your poll because the recent death and birth of my computer means that info like playcounts got lost.

Also your radio-buttons do not encompass my playlist experience -- that is to say, I do not listen to all the music but I also do not create playlists. I ctrl-click the specific genres or artists I am in the mood for each time I play music. Which means I create disposable playlists on the fly, I guess? So my answer is either zero, one, or infinite.

At any rate, my most-played song! Welcome to the Black Parade, by My Chemical Romance. And my current song obsession! Either that one, or Na Na Na by same, or maybe I Am Growing A Beard, by Jon Walker.

IT IS SO AMAZING. I had a really hard time picking just one song for my obsession choice, and it has been my current obsession for - um, a while. Like, all of 2011. And - pause for checking iTunes - some of last year, too. I added it last September, which means it is coming up on one year of Dessa obsession for me. SHE'S REALLY GOOD.

I am also leaving both my babies at home for the first time EVER. They will be home with Daddy.
I will share my Ativan and we can wail together. Also, does Earthling still like to ride in the sling? Bug has outgrown all of ours, and if Earthling is under 40lbs, I can pass on a few carriers.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
OUR BABIES. THEY WILL NOT BE WITH US. WHAT WILL WE DOOOOOOO? (I seriously don't remember. What - what did I DO before I had a baby with me all the time? I do remember sleeping more, I think.)

If I am crying in my hotel room, I will email you. Maybe you can come by for an Emergency Baby Woe Intervention.

The earthling still does like riding in the sling, but we are slowly phasing it out. (Although, holy shit - Bug is 40 pounds? The earthling is 25. I knew he was tiny, but I'm always surprised by evidence of exactly how MUCH he's tiny.)

I've got a couple of MP3 players I use for travel or office work that get new content on a regular basis. My main music player is my computer, and I don't have a program which tracks statistics of songs played; my playlists are albums and a single gigantic load of random MP3s. So I don't have enough data from which to draw to answer most of the poll.

I'd need time to think of the song I'm most infatuated with right now, but if you don't mind, I can regularly post stuff for you to listen to on Youtube or download for the next few hours as a way to escape the humdrum of cover letters.

Also, try these two: Exile Vilify by The National (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-Vg2YS-sFE) and Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjFaenf1T-Y).

A caveat wrt to my most played song: for a while I just had stuff on repeat while I took naps, instead of making a playlist :3 So it's not really an accurate indicator for my favourite song, just one that's calming and nice to sleep to.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand. Two of the songs in my top 20 are there because they were (or are) favorites of the earthling, and his appetite for repetition trumps EVEN MINE. (They are "Proud" by Heather Small and "5 Years Time" by Noah and the Whale. I mean, I love both songs, even after his campaign to play them into the ground, but they are there because of him.)

Also, WOW, I see what you mean about good music to sleep to. Soothing!

I didn't lose any songs in the Hard Drive Crash of '11 (yay backup!), but the play count info seemed to have gotten lost. I think the most played song on my iTunes is probably one of these two:

Pulp, Disco 2000 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUm2XmusnD8) (Different Class is one of my desert island albums and this song is by far my favourite, even above the justifiably famous Common People)

The Veils, Calliope! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24rEZS4pD3s&ob=av2e). As a bonus, this is an AWESOME music video.

# of times I have seriously considered backing out of VVC just because of the "Leaving My Baby" thing: at least 4.

That Dessa song was my very favorite song of everything I heard last year. I'm STILL obsessed with it. I should share my 'Current Obsessions' playlist with you at VVC when we're crying together on the sidelines! I have some really gorgeous songs on there I think you'll love.

I tell you what: if I didn't already have non-refundable tickets, and if I wasn't also going to see Norah who I have not seen in MORE THAN A YEAR, I would have backed out already. (I would have backed out after I had the dream that the earthling died, and they gave his body back to us with a program inside that would run for ten days and be almost like him, so people could say goodbye to him. LOW BLOW, PSYCHE. I couldn't even type out that summary without crying, and I had the dream a week ago.)

Also, yes, I would like to listen to your current obsessions playlist! It sounds AWESOME. Although I am hoping the crying stays to a reasonable minimum. *sniff*

Fortunately, I already know all three of those songs, so no links necessary. You can have your bonus points anyway. Although I should tell you, in honesty, they aren't good for anything. (And maybe it's a good thing you didn't have links. Hotel California rendered me TERRIFIED when I was a child. I considered it the Scariest Song Ever. I still think it's creepy. Great, but creepy.)

Oh, the first time I left my baby it was TORTURE...until I got on the plane. And then I remembered that he was perfectly fine with his daddy, and there were certain perks to the whole ~traveling without a tiny adorable sociopath attached to you~ thing. We all survived the weekend and were happier for it :)

My all-time most played is this version of One. I love it so much.

And my current obsession is Stevie Ray Vaughan. Of course, I get obsessed with him a few times a year, but it still counts, right?

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oooo. I had never heard that version of One, although I love the song (of course) and love that version of it, and I had - um, look, I realize this will not make you love me, but I am BEING HONEST - never heard Stevie Ray Vaughan at all. Although now that I have, I can see how you get cyclically obsessed with him.

[identity profile] neery.livejournal.com 2011-08-08 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I could get any stats on my most played song, but I almost never play songs all the way through, unless I'm listening in the car or while otherwise distracted. Usually I get up, play a minute or so of a song, dance a bit, and then lose interest again. So what Itunes counts as one playthrough - getting all the way to the end of the song - is usually me listening to slightly different parts of one song about three times. And then I've got a bunch of different media players, and half of them don't keep reliable stats. Now that you've asked, though, the statistician in me is sad that I don't have better numbers on my listening habits.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2011-08-09 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
See, I am obsessed with listening to a song ALL THE WAY THROUGH, entirely because the statistician in me CANNOT DEAL with inaccurate stats. I never had this obsession before I was listening to music on devices and programs that tracked my listens, and now I just can't NOT.

...I hope I did not inadvertently infect you with this. Um. Stats are good, but listening to music the way you prefer to is better!

Delta Rae is a local band, and the best description I can come up with is "harmonic rock", and they covered Kanye West's "All of the Lights", and it is awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsAzqd8EdNI

It's a lousy recording, but the best I could find on You Tube (I have mp3s if you like it): Marion Call sings about BSG and Firefly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IECJmq3ADnQ

Oh, that Delta Rae cover is AWESOME. I love it! The Marion Call one was hard to hear, but it sounded interesting. I would love mp3s of both if you have them.

So.

A person my flist actually just plugged a group, and that included a link to a free Amazon MP3 dl sampler. Not to my taste, personally, but, I suspect my taste is not your taste, so...

Onto mine - for the past year or, um, three, I have been playing continuously in my car (on short trips) Nightwish's Phantom of the Opera. So, um heavy metal crossed with Broadway...

(I get an advert before it plays, sorry).

I also like the live version of Eminem and Rhinna's Love the Way You Lie: Warning: references domestic abuse.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46eac7tmXVg

but I don't know how to dl; the album version isn't as good, I don't think.

Lest you think I'm all about hard edged music (uh, ok, I have a distinct broadway edge) I also very much like this live version of Lea Salonga singing Defying Gravity:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHGCEqxLOGE I usually skip forward to about 23 seconds into it before playing it. Again, I don't know how to get it off of Youtube, but, well.

oh, one last one (I guess I'm doing the uplifting after tragedy songs?): Pink's "F*cking Perfect". er, yeah, language warning.

Wait - one more to round out the whole Broadway fixation I have... And still fitting with the uplifting theme:

Brian Stokes Mitchell singing "Impossible Dream"

(hm. For someone who seems to prefer the live versions to the album versions... I probably should go to a concert sometime in my life...)

I did the Metafilter challenge swap this summer and made *20* mixes, then angsted for a month over which one to send. I had one for funny songs, one which proved Scotland produces the best music (IS FACT), one of songs I sing in the bath (TMI), and one about London (TOO MUCH CLASH)

I didn't send my favourite (Evil overlords, villains and henchmen) because it seemed a bit odd to send that to strangers. "WHO IS THIS PERSON AND WHY IS SHE SENDING ME SONGS ABOUT THE DEVIL?"

My most played song (taking over from Elbow) is Don't Hold Me Back by Alex Cornish (1400) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wg14jLk0rIw&feature=related
He's excellent live and still small beans enough to see in tiny clubs, then meet outside where he is smoking. He has released three excellent albums.

If you like Midlake, have you tried John Grant's excellent album Queen of Denmark, on which he was backed by Midlake? It is very beautiful and sad and funny and he has a voice like warm hot chocolate.

If you're looking for something new, try a Scottish band called Butcher Boy, who sound like a cross between The Smiths and Belle & Sebastian. This is their new single, Imperial, which is out on August 22, and which I've been playing obsessively since I heard it on the radio two weeks ago.

If you'd like something funny and loud, I've been listening to Half Man Half Biscuit because when I am gloomy, the lyrics make me laugh:
Here's National Shite Day (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FR842KUaOw) on YouTube. And here's a link (http://www.mediafire.com/?qq9dzbry65qtc8w) to that, "Bad Losers on Yahoo! Chess"; "Give Us Bubblewrap"; and "Dickie Davies Eyes" [first line: "Mention the Lord of the Rings one more time / And I'll more than likely kill you"; contains the word 'bint', which may be a deal-breaker for some, though it's in a Pythonish context]

Someone already gave you Na Na Na x infinity, but the one I keep turning to off MCR's latest is Planetary (GO!) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvfNmXbVHi4). Much bopping in the car whenever it comes up (or, you know, when I make it come up).

And eeee! You're coming to VVC! This surprise is what I get for continually losing track of LJ.

By FAR the most played:

Neil Finn, Driving me Mad.

My suspicion is deep that you will like Neil Finn. And I'm not -just- saying that because I got the tattoo. Harmony and guitars, just harmony and guitars.

Also really good is the band Reik, out of Mexico- poppy harmonies. They are my current new best thing. Fave is probably this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjpSX6fCPDc

And I will so look forward to seeing you at VVC
