Life with two kids: bedtime meltdown

Sophia has spent the last several weeks being very excited that she will, at some point in the near future, get to have her own bed in her own room.

This evening she suddenly realised that she would no longer be in her current bed and had a massive meltdown.

So we're currently reassuring her that she won't be rushed into anything. Fingers crossed for a better mood tomorrow.

Yesterday some friends and I all felt well enough to actually carry through on a tentative plan we made! (All of us are some flavor of chronically ill and in pain, so this was kind of a big deal.) We went to a local pop-up "flea market". It was not a flea market in the traditional sense, it was a market full of vintage clothing etc. vendors. It was fun to wander through, but the only thing I bought was a back issue of Fangoria - a vampire special! At one stall I looked at a really pretty ceramic trinket box; I turned it over to look at the price ($20), and found the scraps of a Goodwill sticker still clinging to it. Yeah, no.

After we grabbed a snack, we hit two thrift stores and I Got Things! Two very pretty trinket boxes (a glass one with roses painted on the lid, the other is wood with mother of pearl inlay), three vintage gothic romances, a pajama set that is very Gothic Heroine in style, a candle snuffer, and a footed silver serving platter. We also found one of the most terrifying dolls I've ever seen, and no, none of us bought it.

Look, I'm a connoisseur of creepy dolls, and even I wouldn't want that thing in my house.

Because Leaving The House means proper clothes, I wore one of the Selkie-style blouses that the Madwoman in the Attic made for me. This style of blouse is possibly my new favorite wardrobe item, so it's a good thing I have ... um ... four of them already.

(Yep, I need to take the bust in a little bit. Simple enough.)

Of course, yesterday's outing has left me sore and headache-y today, so it's a good thing I hadn't made plans.

An MIT linguistics professor yesterday sued a Republican-led House committee that claims to be investigating campus antisemitism for violating his First Amendment rights by calling him an out-of-control antisemite - and MIT for too quickly handing over documents to the committee and for blocking him from teaching a seminar on the linguistics of Zionist colonialism and denying him a pay raise.

In his suit, filed in US District Court in Boston, Michel DeGraff says there's a fundamental difference between opposing Zionism as a political movement and Judaism as a religion, that the House Committee on Education and Workforce is attempting to ruin his life for speaking out against Israeli government actions and that MIT is doing much the same, and never mind that federal courts in Massachusetts have said that the First Amendment includes the right to speak out about the situation in Israel and Gaza.

DeGraff's more immediate ire focuses on a committee report, issued earlier this month, that specifically named him as a big antisemite and that MIT has done nothing to stop him from lashing out against Jews - in particular, one Jewish grad student who sued MIT last year and claims he had to drop out because of the professor's comments.

DeGraff's complaint asserts that, in fact, he is the one under attack and that his use of the phrase "Zionist mind infection" was coined by a Jewish Israeli professor, that many Jews object to what the Israeli government is doing and that some of the biggest US Zionists are actually apocalypse-aspiring Christians who only see Israel as a means to the Second Coming - after all the Jews who don't convert to Christianity are killed:

The Committee's project is a bigoted one, seeking to eliminate all Palestinian, Arab and Muslim students, and anyone supporting and associating with them, from MIT and from the academic world generally.

MIT is complicit in the Committee's project by turning over confidential files, and by giving in to the pressure to harass, surveil, jawbone and sanction students, staff and faculty.

MIT privileges one putative protected class, Jews who assert that Zionism is an aspect of their religion, over everyone else, including Jewish people who oppose the actions of Israel and the Zionist political philosophy.

DeGraff is seeking an injunction under the First Amendment against both the House committee and its chairman, Tim Walberg of Michigan, an Obama birther, 2020 truther, climate-change denier and fan of an Ugandan law to put gays to death who thinks the answer to Gaza is to replicate Hiroshima or Nagasaki there:

Plaintiff seeks declaratory and prospective injunctive relief against the Committee and Chairman Walberg in their official capacities to halt the Committee's ongoing and threatened future violations of Plaintiff's First Amendment rights, including the Committee's continuing demands for records that would identify and expose Plaintiff and chill his protected speech and associations. ...

When viewing the totality of these circumstances, it can be reasonably understood that the Committee's letters and reports, and its continued focus on MIT, and by proxy the Plaintiff, are intended to convey a threat of adverse government action. The harm is not merely retrospective. The Committee has already issued two letters over the course of this "investigation," has publicly stated its intention to continue oversight, and has not withdrawn or narrowed its demands. As a result, Plaintiff reasonably fears that - absent an injunction - the Committee will continue to send demands and public accusations aimed at compelling disclosure and facilitating doxing-style retaliation, thereby continuing to chill Plaintiff's speech and association going forward.

DeGraff also includes MIT in his formal First Amendment charge and says the school is also violating his rights under the Massachusetts civil-rights and anti-discrimination laws, by allegedly and meekly handing over even private records to Walberg and his crew and by refusing to let him teach a seminar on Zionist colonial linguistics, removing him from the MIT linguistics academic unit, denying him a pay raise and keeping one of his seminars off its OpenCourseware site.

By targeting Plaintiff to suppress his protected speech and creating a hostile environment, MIT failed to provide an environment free of discrimination or harassment based on Plaintiff's and other co-workers' and students' racial identity, national origin and association with Palestinian and pro-Palestinian students and co-workers.

Media intake for the last week or so boils down to "a couple chapters of various non-fiction [nothing new] and Thursday's The Pitt." We'll probably try to get an episode or two of Frieren in tonight, before Dayjob swallows me whole for another week.

My main goal for this weekend has been accomplished: today [personal profile] scruloose and I decanted some spices from bags into jars (including the cinnamons and chai spice baking blend replenished from Silk Road* since the last time we batch-prepped for banana bread) and then did a round of bagging up dry ingredients for nine quadruple batches of my breakfast banana bread while actually baking a tenth batch. It's only the second time we've done it, and having the dry ingredients bagged and ready makes such a difference, but the prospect was more exhausting than it had any right to be. (Actually doing it was fine. This time we [reversing how we did it last time] went with me reading off the amounts for each ingredient and rotating the bags while [personal profile] scruloose did the actual measuring and dumping ingredients in.)

*Last time we didn't have nearly enough of any one spice for ten quadruple batches, so some got the chai spice blend and some got the Vietnamese Saigon cinnamon and some got the Indonesian Korintje cinnamon. We also have some of their third type, the Sri Lankan true cinnamon, but the description on the jar says its flavor is pretty delicate, so it didn't seem likely to really shine in the banana bread.

(My erratic spices fascination has resulted in us currently having four kinds, actually, but little idea of what to make that will actually showcase the different types so I can really tell the difference. ^^; [The fourth is the Royal Cinnamon from Burlap and Barrel in the US.])

Last week's bread held out pretty well, though got rather dry.

Enough left - though perhaps a bit too much on the dry side - to include in frittata for Friday night supper along with a yellow bell pepper and eggs also getting used up.

Saturday breakfast rolls: adaptable soft rolls recipe, Marriage's Light Spelt flour, maple syrup, ground ginger: turned out a little on the dense side.

Today's lunch: the Mediterranean roasted vegetable thing: garlic cloves, red onion, fennel, baby courgettes, green bell pepper, red, yellow and orange baby peppers, aubergine; served with couscous - this time I tried M&S, and while the packet instructions are a bit misleading, turned out a lot better than Waitrose.

Today is sunny, breezy, and cool.

I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows and house finches. A flock of blackbirds is flying around and singing.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 3/29/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 3/29/26 -- I trimmed brush around the Japanese maple tree.

EDIT 3/29/26 -- I trimmed brush between the parking lot and wild cherry grove, trying to reestablish a mow path there.

EDIT 3/29/26 -- I trimmed more brush along the mow path.

EDIT 3/29/26 -- I trimmed more brush along the mow path.

I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, plus a fox squirrel.

EDIT 3/29/26 -- I filled a trolley with sticks and dumped it in the firepit.

I saw a pair of red admiral butterflies courting. It's way early for them to appear.

I am done for the night.

[Fic] 2 Baker Street 2 Papas

Back in 2016, I had just published what I believed would be my magnum opus, that massively multi-Holmes vid, Something Good Would Come From That. From the depths of my emotional crash afterwards, I strongly suspected I would never make anything else good again. To console myself, I wrote an id-fic for [personal profile] language_escapes' birthday: kid fic for an obscure Holmes and Watson adaptation. It was just for the two of us; no one else would ever care.

To my everlasting shock, it proved wildly popular.

During the next year or two, I noodled with other stories in the same 'verse, even writing a good 4-5K on one of them, but alas, I drifted out of Holmes fandom before finishing any of them.

But now I seem to be drifting Holmes-ward again? Or anyway, I've been pulling out old Holmesian WIPs and finishing them off.

Which is the long way of saying: here, have a sequel to Baker Street Papas!

Five Times They Didn’t Share A Bed, and One Time They Did

Sherlock Holmes & Doctor Watson (1980 Whitehead & Pickering)

Holmes/Watson, Mycroft

5+1 Things, Developing Relationship, Injury Recovery, Kid Fic, Only One Bed

Part 2 of Baker Street Papas

Mature; No Warnings Apply

To kiss a man in the heat of the moment is one thing. To cold-bloodedly change the entire basis of your relationship is another.

Holmes' wound festers. Watson blames himself.

Around 9K total, and I'll be posting updates daily through the end of the week. Only a short update today, but I figure at least some may want to re-read the original, so that's all right.

I hope you enjoy!

Northeastern University Police report a student was stabbed outside the Marino Center, 369 Huntington Ave., around 10:30 p.m. on Friday.

The victim, a Northeastern student, reported that a black male suspect had assaulted him. Based on video evidence, the male suspect has fled the area. The student was transported to the hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury.

The victim was stabbed in the back.

Stanley Staco reports the suspect ran towards the Fens, in a black jacket with a BMW logo on it.

Police say they have stepped up patrols around the campus, and that Boston Police have joined the investigation.

"'We were there in the 80s for the crash, and this is definitely crashier.'"

guess I can get where they're coming from, but I don't think the current video game industry crash feels, specifically, "crashier." It feels worse and bigger, most definitely, which is what they meant, I'm sure, but it doesn't really feel much like an actual "crash" at all, at least not in the usual sense of such things.

Nominations Guidelines - Spring 2026

Mar. 29th, 2026 12:09 pm
littlefics: Three miniature books standing on an open normal-sized book. (Default)
[personal profile] littlefics posting in [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles
Nominations are now open for the Spring 2026 round of Seasons of Drabbles! Nominations will remain open until signups close on Sunday, April 12 @ 11:59pm Eastern Daylight time (Countdown).

Important Reminders
  • All character nominations should be disambiguated, for example: Steve Rogers (Captain America (Movies)). Not doing this slows the approval process significantly, so please disambiguate! Characters may be nominated in any/every fandom in which they appear.

  • We will not approve broad writer's-choice character nominations (e.g., "Creator's Choice of Demon" or "Any Star Trek Captain"). This is because it requires the mods to have fandom-specific knowledge when checking that gifts are for a requested character during approvals. Instead, please nominate specific characters.

For example, we would not approve "Creator's Choice of Jedi" under Star Wars because it'd require the mods to know/find out which individual characters in a gift are Jedi or not. Instead, we'd ask you to nominate specific Jedi characters. The only fandoms where such broad nominations are permitted are the "Creator's Choice" fandoms (e.g., "Female Character"), since by their nature, character nominations cannot be specific.

General Guidelines
  • You may nominate up to 10 fandoms with up to 10 characters each.

  • Both umbrella fandoms and sub-fandoms are allowed. For instance, you may nominate under Marvel Cinematic Universe or Star Wars - All Media Types. You may also nominate under sub-fandoms such as Thor (Movies) or Star Wars Original Trilogy.

Please remember that if you request Any for an umbrella fandom, you will be requesting any character who appears in any of the fandoms below the umbrella - NOT just characters in the tagset. So if you plan to request Any, you may want to request under a specific sub-fandom rather than the umbrella.

  • RPF is allowed. Nominated RPF characters must be famous in their own right, and must be 18+ for modern RPF.

  • Crossovers are allowed. Crossover fandoms should be nominated as Fandom A/Fandom B. Character nominations for crossovers should be nominated as Character's Name (Fandom A/Fandom B). For example, if nominating Luke Skywalker for a Narnia/Star Wars crossover, the fandom would be nominated as Chronicles of Narnia/Star Wars, while the character would be nominated as Luke Skywalker (Narnia/Star Wars).

  • Recursive fandoms are allowed. The required format is Recursive: Fic/Series title - Creator. Recursive fandoms may be nominated under two circumstances: 1. the creator has posted a blanket permission statement, 2. you are the creator. In either case, please contact us when nominating so that we have the pertinent permissions. Characters nominated under recursive fandoms should be disambiguated with the title of the recursive fandom.

  • Since we will be re-using the tagset all year, recursive fandoms will be removed on an as-needed basis between rounds (only if a blanket permission statement comes down, or the creator asks for it to be removed).

  • Original Works are allowed. When nominating characters, please disambiguate with (Original Work). If an original character's gender is important to you, please specify it in your nomination. An example nomination: Original Nonbinary Character (Original Work)

  • Original characters may also be nominated in existing fandoms. When nominating an original character within an existing fandom, please disambiguate with the name of the fandom. If an original character's gender is important to you, please specify it in your nomination. An example nomination: Original Anbu Character (Naruto)

  • Objects/concepts/etc. may be nominated in the character slot for any canon in which they appear. For Original Works, you can make some up if you would like. Some example nominations: Cursed Hat (What We Do in the Shadows (TV)), Magic Mirror (Original Work)

Today's News:

I think Jim is gone

Mar. 29th, 2026 07:30 am
susandennis: (Default)
[personal profile] susandennis
Jim Across The Hall was not across the hall all day yesterday. And he's not there today. I think they have re-homed him. I'm going to ask tomorrow. It's so weird to have him just disappear but there is no reason why they should tell us - his neighbors - except to say he's ok. Yesterday, during elbow coffee, the security guard who makes checks* was by and we asked him to check and he came back and said that Jim was fine. He did not, in retrospect, say Jim was there. IF Jim was on his list of People Not Home, then he would say Jim is fine.

Yesterday's and today's newspapers are outside his door and the door has not been opened since Friday.

*The doors have a sensor and if you do not open yours by 10 am, they are alerted and call you or come find your dead body.

I sent the head of Health Services a note just now asking about him. We may never find out a thing. Oh well. He was a nice neighbor to have.

The Mariners lost again last night. It's kind of nostalgic. Like the Mariners of old who rarely won a game.

Today's game is on Peacock which is weird. As basically a non-sports person, I see no reason to sprinkle sports shit on every single airwave. For real sports people, it must be a nightmare. For me, it's just annoying to have to wade through sports shit to get to real TV streaming on every single stream. Get off my lawn.

My Peacock account runs until the end of April and I haven't decided whether or not to renew. But, at least I have today's game. It will be interesting to see if they use local commentators or bring their own.

I do want to get a swim in. And I might want to go to Safeway, but there's nothing on my list that can't wait so I might hold off.

It looks like the sun might come out so I think I'll go swim before it does.

It's been another homebody weekend, which I don't regret in the slightest. I did go out on Friday night to an event at the tiny local museum, which was a launch of sorts for its latest temporary exhibition. The museum is so small that the temporary exhibitions are housed in a single room about the size of my kitchen; this one was about the history of beer-making, and so the launch event involved talks and tasters from a trio of local breweries. We followed this up with a drink in our favourite cafe/bar, which was heaving with customers — always a good sign on a Friday night.

Other than that, it's been spring cleaning — I cleaned all the external windows and windowsills, including clambering onto the kitchen roof in order to get at our upper floor bedroom windows — classes and swimming at the gym, and batch-cooking. Matthias and I also spent half an hour or so this morning planting wildflower seeds in the front and back garden raised beds, plus beetroot seeds in the vegetable beds. The other seeds that I started off in the growhouse — chives, cucumbers, rocket, salad greens, and spring onions — are coming along nicely, even though it's been cold.

Other good things: Pretty Lethal, the ridiculous black comedy/luridly violent action thriller involving a troupe of American ballet dancers stranded in a Hungarian forest en route to a competition in Budapest, and swept up into a deadly showdown between two rival gangs of goons who want to kill them, one of which is headed up by bitter ex-ballet dancer Uma Thurman (sporting an indeterminate Eastern European accent). The soundtrack is all scores from famous ballets, and all the action scenes involve a sort of intersection of martial arts and ballet. It's as silly as it sounds, and made for a great Saturday night film.

I finished up my Earthsea reread over lunch with The Other Wind, which I think I've only ever read once or twice, but which remains achingly beautiful, like a dragon's half-remembered flight across a sunset sky. I think the peak of the series is probably Tehanu, though, which always renders me awestruck. I have read the Earthsea short story collections at some point, but I don't own copies, so those will have to wait if I want the reread to be fully complete. For now, though, I plan to turn to one of the books from my stack of five from the public library, or possibly Amal El-Mohtar's new short story collection, which I'd preordered and was delivered to me last week.

I hope you've all been having similarly cosy weekends.

I got tea! Ok...coffee, but STILL

First off, I missed doing a check in last week so to catch up, I was 196.4 last week and 195.9 this week. Yes, it's going down but I'm tracking calories and weighing things and it should be at at least a pound or more per week at the deficit that I'm eating. Ah well. I have another month of the 2.5 dose and since the effectiveness is wearing off and the weight is on the verge of completely stalling, I'll let the doc know that it's time to go up a level for the month after that. The side effects are lessening so it's time. I probably could have bumped up already but I'll just exercise willpower for a month.

I am going to experiment with not tracking calories this week and see how it goes. I know mentally I'll be doing the math which is fine and I'll be aware of making good food choices. I'm also going to take off a couple of random days this week since I need to start slowly chewing up vacation days as not to lose any at the end of June and also since Bossdude Josh is off this week taking his daughter to colleges so it's an ideal time. I'll do some filming on those days as well as will get to the Y.

I won't be taking tomorrow off, though it's tempting because I got to see my girl Noor and also be there for the PIPING HOT TEA. That post I made last week about Lindsay? Well, there is NEWS. Girl put in her NOTICE! WOO HOO! Luckily for Elaine and Josh, the head of the business office is going to let them list the position since he knows that having more staff is a dire need in our office. Not that any of the help is going to be for me but I digress.

Anyway, on Friday, Elaine was annoying the SHIT out of me with her woe is me crap and how she's so busyyyyy with no hellllp. Bitch, shut UP. You are finally getting rid of the dead weight to get a new and better person so suck it up.

Now there IS going to be more drama because Lindsay wants to take her I think they said 60 sick days. Uh...unless you're getting a doctor to write you out with some form of dire illness, you can't do that. So it'll be interesting to see how THAT goes.

Also, Emily's right hand gal Alicia will be applying for the job and Noor is going to help me push having her get it since she would be a fantastic and well qualified person. It would suck for Emily to lose her but their center is slowly dying so it's time for people to jump ship. Emily's looking and not getting bites but fortunately as long as she makes it to August without the center going tits up, she'll be at her 25 years and can retire with full benefits and look for non-RU, non-State jobs

So this week should be interesting, eh?

My ficticious husband just showed up at my office party?!?, by KizuKatana

So Wei Ying had started out by simply saying ‘sorry, I’m taken’ when anyone asked him out.

He hadn’t really been expecting to have to expand on it with follow up questions that he got asked like: ‘Is it serious? What do they do for work? Do they live in town? How did you meet? What are they like?’

And… ok, Wei Ying could admit in retrospect that he might have gone a little bit too far.

I finished s4 of For All Mankind with mixed feelings - you can read my review of the season 4 finale here, which goes into details as to why - but not so much that I wasn't curious about s5, which started on Friday.

Spoilers finally found out what happened to Oleg from The Americans )
ruuger: Londo from Babylon 5 and the text: "And now for something completely different - a Centauri with seven tentacles" (And now for something completely differe)

This is to let you know that I have now joined the ranks of Taskmaster RPF writers, except not in a way that I think most people do. I got the idea for this fic last year when listening to the Taskmaster live shows, where Greg and Alex joked about a dark version of the show and Greg being a dictator, and somehow this dystopian political satire just popped into my head, fully formed. Resemblance to any governments, British, American, or otherwise, are purely coincidental.

(it was originally supposed to be more of a Squid Games fusion type of thing - hence the title - but then, uh, the real world turned out to be more inspiring in a bad way)

And for the record, it's in an Anonymous collection but not because I don't want it associated with me, but because I know that the Taskmaster production team reads fic on AO3 and I've already been contacted by a British production company once after writing comedy RPF so I wanted to make it at least a little bit more difficult for them to connect it to my fannish identity ;)

The Taskmaster Games - Episode: "We Aim to Please" (3301 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Taskmaster (UK TV) RPF
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Major Character Death
Characters: Original Characters, Greg Davies, Alex Horne (British Comedy RPF)
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Dystopia, Dark, Satire, Dark Greg Davies, Dark Alex Horne, Minor Greg Davies/Alex Horne, Current Events, Bigotry & Prejudice
Summary:

He'd posted a joke on social media. That was the reason why he was here. Ever since the elections, he'd been more careful with his words. No naming names, no directly calling out the Regime. But he'd still managed to trigger some invisible tripwire and came home from a gig to find the men in black waiting for him.

Welcome to Taskmaster. A show where a broken funny bone isn't just a metaphor.

Welcome back!

Most of today’s edition comes with new releases! I think these are all 2026 release, if memory serves from when I put them in the SBTB repo. There are two romances and two non-fiction titles.

Want to pass along any recommendations? Leave them in the comments!

A Woman’s Work

If you are at all interested in the history of midwifery or how pregnancy has evolved over time, this is the book for you. I will not that “mothering” is a bit of a misclassification, as the content skews more toward birthing rather than parenthood.

From the author of Unwell Women comes a powerful and groundbreaking new narrative history of motherhood and mothering.

Mothers make history. But what it has meant for mothers to do the physical and emotional work of mothering has, for centuries, been neglected in the stories of the past. Patriarchal control of motherhood has relegated the acts of growing, birthing, nurturing, and loving to the sidelines, and deemed it unimportant, women’s work. Now, through the voices of women themselves, Elinor Cleghorn reclaims and retells the history of motherhood, showcasing the mothers, othermothers, midwives, activists, community leaders, and more who have shaped the course of history.

Beginning in the ancient world, we encounter a figurine made for a childbirth ritual over three thousand years ago. We meet extraordinary writers and poets, like Anne Bradstreet and Elizabeth Jocelin, who were expressing their innermost feelings about motherhood. During the seventeenth century, in the streets of London, we encounter unmarried mothers struggling against stigma and shame, and the women who strove to help them. Later, pioneers like Mary Wollstonecraft laid the intellectual foundation for the liberation of motherhood from male control, and the abhorrent treatment of enslaved mothers was brought to public attention by courageous activists like Sojourner Truth. These and many other brave characters lobbied for mothers of all classes and circumstances to be valued, respected, and supported–not as reproductive vessels, but as people.

Eat Your Heart Out

I was hunting around for some new dark romances and I came across this novella. I immediately added it to my TBR pile. It’s showing up as $2.99 right now, so I may just buy a digital copy because it sounds wild.

I didn’t eat people. Just men. First of all, I’d like to set the record straight. I wasn’t a cannibal, ʼkay?

I didn’t eat people. Just men. I ate their hearts out before they ever saw me coming. Figuratively, of course. Most of the time.

Sometimes a girl had to do what a girl had to do. And sometimes what I had to do was fry those suckers up with a little bit of buttermilk and enough shortening to give ya coronary.

I wouldn’t ever apologize for it.

Which was something else you should know about me. I was unapologetic. Then again, so was he. Else the hotshot with a blade bigger than his d*ck wouldn’t have barged his way into my little apartment without so much as a “my bad, sorry for disturbing you, ma’am.”

And I wouldn’t have been forced to tie him to a chair and teach him some manners. But here we are, ain’t we?

Just a sweet little Southern girl and the big bad pickle-diddler who thought he was about to get his rocks off.

Guess it wasn’t his lucky day. Sure was mine, though.

Eat Your Heart Out is a dark standalone novella with a HEA. Please heed the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book.

Law Maker

Big shoutout to C and Deborah, whose discussion on a previous Whatcha Reading, made me add this to my personal TBR pile. I love finding new reads from y’all!

Clara
Invisibility has been my go-to survival skill since childhood. So I hide behind my thick glasses and heavy fringe, working as a teaching assistant at the exclusive Molton Prep, happy with my seven-year-old pupils and studiously avoiding their posh parents. My one secret indulgence? Watching the gorgeous but wildly intimidating Lord Sterling sweep into school to collect his son.

I’m ridiculous. Not only is Rafe completely terrifying, but he’s a high-profile barrister destined to be the UK’s youngest ever judge. A girl with a background like mine should stay out of his way.

Rafe
How dare the school insist that I can’t meet the Miss Clara, who told my son his brain “works differently”? Nobody refuses a meeting with me. But when I bulldoze my way past the school rules to confront her, I’m shocked by how much this shy woman affects me. She might be too scared to make eye contact, but when it comes to defending my son, she’s surprisingly fierce. And after I convince her to work as my son’s tutor and she gradually stops flinching in my presence, my obsession with her only grows.

As a rule, I get what I want, and after seeing glimpses of her humour, kind heart and surprising strength, I want Clara Morris with an intensity I’ve never felt before. But I should be careful what I wish for, because Clara Morris is not who she says she is.

In my arrogance, I push her away, not realising that her fear runs deeper than simple shyness, not seeing the danger she’s in until it’s too late…

LAW MAKER is an opposites attract, billionaire, single father, contemporary romance, perfect for fans of intense, protective heroes and heroines overcoming trauma to find their happily ever after.

Content warning: this book features scenes of domestic violence.

Rebel of the Regency

I’ve enjoyed Foster’s Vulgar History Podcast, and I’m so happy to see she got herself a book deal from all of her hard and very entertaining work!

The dramatic, absolutely outrageous story of Caroline of Brunswick, a beloved icon of the Regency era, who uplifted the voice of the public and unabashedly defied society’s expectations, yet was shockingly robbed of her crown, from the host of the Vulgar History podcast.

Caroline Amelia Elizabeth, Princess of Brunswick, was born in the northern German town of Braunschweig. Her mother and father, the duke and duchess, instantly knew one there was something irrefutably untamable about their daughter. She grew up a wild child, sequestered from others to protect her family’s reputation—a Regency-era Rapunzel.

She was freed from this gilded cage by an unexpected marriage proposal from George Augustus Frederick, Prince of Wales and the eldest son of George III and Queen Charlotte. Caroline was entirely unprepared for the backstabbing mean girls of the royal court. Always staying true to herself, she stepped into her role of queen-to-be without compromising her character, showing off her affinity for fashion, her many eccentric hobbies, and ultimately, her infallible spirit, despite being ostracized as an outsider by her in-laws.

And so Caroline became the unlikely figurehead of the anti-monarchists, aided by the just-emerging tabloid press. Yet, despite her status as a revolutionary heroine, Caroline’s name faded away following her death. Until now.

For fans of Normal Women, Ann Foster brings us the riveting story of Caroline of Brunswick, Britain’s uncrowned queen, through an empowering examination of womanhood and autonomy that feels just as relevant today.
