Help, friends list?

I need translations (in any language - I will totally welcome things like Elvish and Klingon, too) for the following five words:

Welcome

Read

Listen

Create

Explore

Any bilingual/multilingual people out there who like to help me out? You'll get - okay. You'll just get thanks. But they will be very sincere thanks.

Latin:

Salve

Lege

Audi

Crea

Explora

Ancient Greek (transliterated -- I don't know how to get proper Greek letters on LJ, but if you want Greek script, I can spend some time working it out (something I should have done long ago anyway...)):

Chaire

Anagignoske

Akoue

Phuteue

Katoskope

Awesome! Thank you so much!

And, well, I admit I'm curious about what it would look like in proper Greek letters, but you are busy, and I don't really need it, so no need to invest the time unless you want to. Just - Greek is very pretty! I'm kind of a writing whore! *admires own icon*

[identity profile] toft-froggy.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Your icon makes me twitch because in actual ancient Greek pronunciation, transcribed into English, it says 'Etths - tee ueeinetsal laeeguage'. I keep wanting to know what 'Etths' means, and then I realize the problem is all in my mind.

I was doing the same thing...trying *really hard* to read it and coming out with "Stths" pronounced in my head and a big blank for what it might mean...

[identity profile] toft-froggy.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, is that a sigma? I couldn't remember if it was a big E or a big S. Actually that's better, because at least 'Stths' is funny. The universal language of snake, maybe?

Greek Parceltongue!

[identity profile] frostfire-17.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
*dies* your icon! is there context?

It's a bit of Aeschylus' Agamemnon that's marked by crux desperanda (at least in my Oxford text). So it's like a double joke. Not only can non-Greek readers not understand it, but even the Oxford editor couldn't quite figure out what was going on.

(It literally translates to something like "the heart-devouring mind of pain".)

[identity profile] toft-froggy.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, thank god, I just spent about ten minutes trying to understand that. I got something like, 'the heat-bodied soul of a wolf?'. I thought maybe it was a Sirius/Lupin Greek joke... (what? That could happen!)

Yeah, I spent awhile staring at it, going: "The heartbreaking soul of pain? The soul-destroying mind of grief? Does this--what does it *mean*?" Awesomeness!

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
...Now I want a Greek parceltongue icon.

I love you guys SO MUCH, and this is such an awesome thread. If you'd been my middle school Latin teacher, I would probably have enjoyed the class a whole lot more. (But I would not wish that on anyone. Eleven middle school girls. It was...well. You can imagine, I think.)

Harry! Your tongue! It's in violation of several packaging restrictions!

[identity profile] toft-froggy.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm now dying at the idea of Greek parceltongue. It... it is spelt parseltongue in HP, right? Because I just can't get past the idea of parceltongue.

Re: Harry! Your tongue! It's in violation of several packaging restrictions!

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
*giggles helplessly*

Yes, it's spelled parseltongue in HP. But I will always think of it was parceltongue, now.

...Although that has creepy serial-killer connotations, now I think on it.

Still. Parceltongue. Awesome.

[identity profile] frostfire-17.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
ahahaha yeah it is a sigma. I definitely had a moment of "Stths?" as well.

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
*snerk*

I am making a mental note to avoid using that icon in the presence of classicists. They're the last people I want to make twitchy, because we all know what happens when classicists go bad.

*has seen it happen*

I haven't been able to figure out how to get Greek onto a comment, but I did (I think) get it on a post. So it's here on my journal.

[identity profile] pentapus.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You may already know this route, but one way to get greek letters in lj (a time consuming way, admittedly) is the same way people get ♥, i.e. with html. link (http://htmlhelp.com/reference/html40/entities/symbols.html).

No, I didn't know about html Greek. Thank you! (Although you aren't kidding about time consuming...)
