Help, friends list?

I need translations (in any language - I will totally welcome things like Elvish and Klingon, too) for the following five words:

Welcome

Read

Listen

Create

Explore

Any bilingual/multilingual people out there who like to help me out? You'll get - okay. You'll just get thanks. But they will be very sincere thanks.

Singular or plural imperative?

[identity profile] thefourthvine.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Singular, please!

[identity profile] sorciere.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Danish:

Welcome: Velkommen
Read: Læs (to read - at læse)
Listen: Lyt (to listen - at lytte)
Create: Skab (to create - at skabe, which is the best translation I can think of. It sounds a bit silly as just 'skab', which also means closet, but uh. Yeah. I haz cold.)
Explore: Udforsk (to explore - at udforske. Ditto for this. Sounds silly as an order-of-sorts, but it's the best I can think of)

Any other Danish-speakers are welcome to correct me - I'm at home with a cold so my brain really isn't at its best right now X.x

Latin:

Salve

Lege

Audi

Crea

Explora

Ancient Greek (transliterated -- I don't know how to get proper Greek letters on LJ, but if you want Greek script, I can spend some time working it out (something I should have done long ago anyway...)):

Chaire

Anagignoske

Akoue

Phuteue

Katoskope

German:

Welcome - Willkommen

Read - Lies!

Listen - Höre!

Create - eh, can of worms, actually. Create in which context? There are manifold translation depending on what you're creating. Most general one would be, IMHO, "Erschaffe".

Explore - Erkunde!/Erforsche! (although the second one is more like research)

I can help you out with German, but I need more context than that. Do you just want the basic form of the verb?

[identity profile] shadowvalkyrie.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't know me, but, well... I found your request browsing other people's f-list. (No, I have no life, why do you ask?)

Here's German imperative singular:

welcome = (sei) willkommen

read = lies

listen = hör zu

create = erschaffe

explore = erforsche

Here, have some Latin! (From [livejournal.com profile] accidentalfan, since you really wouldn't want to trust my Latin skills.)

Welcome: Salve (apparently there isn't an easy way to say "Welcome" in Latin, so that's "Hello")
Read: Lege
Listen: Audi
Create: Fac (to make), Crea (to make/elect/beget)
Explore: Explora

Ah, you beat me to it. ;)

Welcome - Dobro pozhalovat'! (добро пожаловать!)

The rest of these are imperfective infinitive (basically, current or habitual actions).

(to) Read - Chitat' (читать)
(to) Listen - Slushat' (слушать)
(to) Create - Sozdavat' (probably) (создавать)
(to) Explore - Issledovat' (исследовать)

Welcome : Bienvenue

infinitive, as in 'to read, click here'? would be

Read : Lire
Listen : Ecouter
Create : Créer
Explore : Explorer

in French with the imperative you have to chose singular or plural, which is not based on 'do I address one person at once or several' but on 'do i adress one person casually or formally'? - this is a tough choice, which is why I think we mostly stick to the infinitive instead. but:

(imperative singular, aka the casual form)

Read: Lis
Listen: Ecoute
Create: Crée
Explore: Explore

(imperative plural, aka the formal choice for singular address)

Read: Lisez
Listen: Ecoutez
Create: Créez
Explore: Explorez

Awesome! Thank you so much!

And, well, I admit I'm curious about what it would look like in proper Greek letters, but you are busy, and I don't really need it, so no need to invest the time unless you want to. Just - Greek is very pretty! I'm kind of a writing whore! *admires own icon*

[identity profile] vienna-waits.livejournal.com 2008-03-22 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
German (I'm assuming the first word is a greeting, and I'm just using infinitives for the other four, not direct-address imperatives--if you want those instead, they're longer):
Willkommen
lesen
hören
schaffen
erkunden

If you provided more context about what you're doing with this (where you are posting this and for what target audience, what topic is being discussed, etc.), I might be able to give you a better translation. (Disclaimer: I am a professional translator. People's requests for all-purpose translations of words without context are probably why you end up with so many laughable translations on signs and the like. Translation without context often ends in tears. [/professional rant])

Oh, and more formal for "listen" would be "horche".

Welcome
Mandarin: huan(1) ying(2) (欢迎 huān yíng)
Japanese: youkoso (ようこそ)

Read
Mandarin: du(2) (shu(1)) (读书 dú shū) or nian(4) (shu(1)) (念书 niàn shū) ('shu' is literally 'book'. 'du' or 'nian' are the verbs. usage of 'shu' is dependent on the context.)
Japanese: yomu (to read, not conjugated) (読む)

Listen
Mandarin: ting(1) (听 tīng)
Japanese: kiku (to listen, not conjugated) (聞く)

Create
Mandarin: depending on the context, it's either chuang(4) zuo(4) (创作 chuàng zuò) or just zuo(4) (作 zuò)
Japanese: souzou suru (創造 する) (it's literally 'to cause to exist')

Explore
Mandarin: tan(4) xian(3) (探险 tàn xiǎn)
Japanese: tanken suru (to go on an expedition) (探検する), saguru (to investigate) (探る)

Thank you so much!

And I kind of love that "create" is a can of worms. Oh, German, you are so awesome; I wish I'd kept studying you. Sadly, I don't think we have a very clear idea of the context right now, so the most general one is probably the best way to go.

Welsh?

Welcome = Croeso

... I *should* know read, and listen. And my 7 year old daughter definitely does but it's past her bedtime! Sorry.

Just the basic form, yup, but I think [livejournal.com profile] eledhwenlin has German covered. Thank you, though!

Thank you! (And my Latin skills are likewise, um. I think "rusty" is too generous. Let's put it this way: my middle school Latin teachers weep.)
